The Asian Cultural & Media Studies Research Cluster of the Monash Asia Institute, Monash University will host an international conference, ‘Asian Cultural and Media Studies Now’ at Monash University, Caulfield campus in Melbourne on 6 – 7 November 2014.

The conference aims to critically revisit some of the key issues in the study of Asian culture, media and communications, which have been developed rapidly over the last twenty years, to discuss what kinds of new approaches and scholarly frameworks are required in the current socio-historical context. The conference will focus on four key areas of investigation, whose historical significance and transgressive potential requires reassessment in light of the advancement of market-driven processes of globalization and intensifying socio-economic disparity:
1) Alternative modernities and de-Westernization
2) Trans-Asian connections, dialogue and unevenness
3) Cultural convergence, citizenship and socio-cultural diversity
4) Mobility, imagined communities and cosmopolitanism

We are inviting proposals for paper presentations on these issues, although proposals that are in other ways relevant to the topic of Asian Cultural and Media Studies Now will also be considered.

The conference format will be discussion-oriented and all speakers will give a concise talk of the main points for 10-15 minutes. Speakers are not expected to present complete papers but to raise key theoretical questions with related empirical examination where relevant.

Please kindly be advised that we will not be able to offer financial support for participants’ travel costs. There will be no registration fees for the conference.

Research in media and communication studies at Karlstad University is pursued at the Department of Geography, Media and Communication (GMK) in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Media and communication studies at Karlstad University is an attractive education and research environment with interdisciplinary contacts and global perspectives as integral parts of our activities.

Undergraduate studies are offered in the two degree programmes Information & PR and Media and Communication, the latter with the options Communication and Global Media and Visual Communication and Design. The overarching research perspective is global media studies, including global media industries and journalism as well as the daily media routines in a multifaceted mediascape. The research pursued under this umbrella has an emphasis on two areas: (1) Communication, culture and identity, and (2) Media, democracy and citizenship. Researchers in the department are used to publishing internationally and attracting research funding. The environment is internationally orientated and in an expansive phase. We are recent recipients of a major research funding from the Ander Foundation to institute The Ander Centre for Research on News and Opinion in the Digital Era (NODE), which means that we now need to recruit a number of new academic staff to strengthen the research and teaching capacity in our two profile areas, including: a postdoc position (2 years) in media and communication studies: news, public opinion, and digital media (linked to NODE).

Duties for the postdoc position in media and communication studies with emphasis news, public opinion, and digital media.
This postdoc position offers the opportunity to work for two years on a research project of relevance to one or both of the NODE research projects, i.e. (1) how audiences access political information (in a wide sense of the word) in a media landscape where journalism no longer necessarily has a given role, and (2) how organisations, businesses, and public authorities act and think in relation to the gradual weakening or even outright disappearance of investigative journalism; to what extent alternative forces such as citizen journalists, activists and public authorities are perceived to fulfil similar functions to investigative journalism; and what communication strategies are used by businesses and public authorities (and other organizations with an interest in public opinion formation) when many citizens cannot be reached via traditional mass media. The postdoc is also expected to contribute to the NODE research environment and to departmental research activities generally by participating in seminars, conferences, meetings, etc. Postdoc duties are mainly linked to research. Partly, but not exceeding 20%, duties may include teaching, supervision, examination, course responsibility and development.

Eligibility
A PhD in media and communication studies/related field or equivalent qualifications from abroad is required for this postdoc position. The doctoral degree must have been earned within three years before the application deadline. An applicant holding a degree older than three years may still be considered if there are special reasons e.g. parental leave och sick leave.

Assessment criteria
Beyond the eligibility requirements, the following qualifications and skills will be considered: 
Special weight is given to the innovativeness and feasibility of the project proposal, and its international relevance.
Special weight is given to the project’s relevance to one of the following themes:
*1) how audiences access political information (in a wide sense of the word) in a media landscape where journalism no longer necessarily has a given role,
*2a) how organisations, businesses, and public authorities act and think in relation to the gradual weakening or even outright disappearance of investigative journalism; to what extent alternative forces such as citizen journalists, activists and public authorities are perceived to fulfil similar functions to investigative journalism,

Considerable weight is given to the considered and realistic publication plan submitted (preferably with specification of substudies, planned publication channels/journals etc)
Considerable weight is given to documented research skills in one of the following areas: journalism, news media, media consumption, public opinion, political communication, strategic communication.
Weight is given to the fact that research skills are primarily documented through peer reviewed journal publications – at least one such international journal publication is required.
Weight is given to the high degree of research skills demonstrated in respect to problem formulation, theory and methodological awareness, and analytical capacity.

In addition, the following are useful qualifications:
*besides academic qualifications, experience of practical communication work (journalism, information etc)
*experience of developing and leading projects and activities
*international experience and experience of teaching in English
*experience of course development and web-based teaching
*experience of external cooperation

Shirley Saenz

She has been actively working in the cross-cultural field training and counseling global teams, international business managers and professionals with international exposure in several industries. During the last years, Shirley has been living and working overseas throughout Colombia, France, China, Brazil, Argentina and the United States, which allowed her to gain a deep understanding of these cultures. Shirley’s primary research interests have been the cultural differences among Latin American countries, the impact of language on culture, and intercultural communication in multicultural and virtual teams.

CFP Affiliate Journal Initiative by ICA

New Affiliate Journal Initiative Developed for International Communication Association (ICA)

ICA has just announced the inaugural call for applications for ICA Affiliate Journal status. In January, 2014 the ICA Board established a new journal category, “Affiliate Journal.” An affiliate journal is published independently of ICA, in a language other than English, and meets or exceeds the general standards of an ICA journal and the specific standards developed for affiliate journals. Once approved by the ICA board, the affiliate journal will carry the ICA imprimatur and will be designated as such on the ICA website. An affiliate journal will be available to ICA members on line for free or at a discount.

The procedures and guidelines for this Affiliate Journal initiative will be operative for a trial period of three years. A maximum of two journals will be selected for this initial phase. For the first 2 years journal editors of the affiliate journals will provide the ICA Board with an annual report submitted one month before the annual meeting. During the third year a comprehensive formal review will be conducted by a specially appointed affiliate journal evaluation committee comprised of members of ICA’s Executive Committee and at least one appointed member from both the ICA board and the publication Committee. At that time the entire program will be evaluated, long term procedures for continued assessment and evaluation will be established, and decisions will be made regarding continuing affiliate status for the journal.

Rationale
The Affiliate Journal initiative serves several of the internationalization goals articulated by the EC and the ICA Board. Affiliate journals build bridges with the international communication community, connect our membership with research published in non- English high quality journals, help publicize the finest communication research done throughout the world, and give our members access to new and diverse audiences.

To be accepted as an affiliate journal, the editorial management must agree to publish extended abstracts of each article in every issue in English. Other efforts to share research not typically published in English are encouraged. An affiliate journal might for example, invite English language reviews of literature of research in a particular area that has not been readily accessible to most members of ICA. Efforts to enable ICA members to share their work with colleagues working in other languages are also highly desirable. Affiliate journals may, for example, publish interviews (both in English and the official language of the journal) with scholars who typically publish in a language other than the official language of the journal. On line or in print for free or at a discount, English language extended abstracts will be available for free online.

ICREA SENIOR CALL GUIDELINES 2014
ICREA opens 10 senior research positions.

Minimum requirements are a Ph.D. degree obtained preferably before 2010, with at least four years of international exposure at pre-doctoral and/or post-doctoral level. Only very strong candidates with an outstanding research record and excellent leadership capabilities will be considered. Successful applicants will have a permanent contract with ICREA and will work at universities or research centres in Catalonia. ICREA researchers are required to make substantial contributions to their own areas of research and have a strong impact in the Catalan research system by becoming active members and leaders of the Catalan research community. The ICREA position is not compatible with a part time permanent contract outside the Catalan research system. Scholars who have held a permanent position in the Catalan research system for longer than 12 months on the deadline of this call will not be accepted as candidates. Successful candidates will be required to join the host institution no later than September 2015. Salaries will be in line with those paid at Catalan universities. ICREA research professors will be subject to an evaluation of their research progress and general performance after a three-year period and subsequently every five years. The evaluations will be carried out by external evaluation committees that will assess scientific production as well as research activity. A positive evaluation will lead to a salary increase.
Applications must be submitted electronically via the ICREA Chair website before 2:00 pm (local time) on Tuesday, 6 May 2014.

The application requires all the following items:
1. on-line form for personal and professional data, a statement on research interests (2000 characters maximum), a list of the 5 most relevant publications, a statement of purpose (3000 characters maximum).

2. A single .pdf file (maximum 15 pages and up to 4 Mb in size) containing the candidate’s CV in English.

3. Two to four reference letters in English in .pdf or .doc format. The candidate should directly ask the scholars listed in the application form to upload a reference letter using the link provided by the applicant. The reference letters must be attached before 2:00 pm (local time) on Tuesday, 6 May 2014. Referees may also be contacted directly by ICREA.

4.  An expression of interest document from the host institution(s)

The candidate must directly contact each institution (university or research centre in Catalonia) that he/she is interested in and obtain the institution’s acceptance. The host institution’s expression of interest form must be downloaded directly by the institution using the link provided by the applicant. At the link, the institution will find the information needed to submit the form (both electronically and by post). The form (in both formats) must be received by ICREA before 2:00pm (local time) on Tuesday, 6 May 2014.

The candidate may seek acceptance at more than one institution. In this case each institution must submit a separate expression of interest form to ICREA (both electronically and by post).

Additional information:

1. New applicants may register at www.icrea.cat. Old applicants simply log in using their username and password. Candidates are requested to safely store their username and password. They will be needed to access and edit applications.

2. Applications can be edited and saved as many times as necessary before submission. Submitted applications may also be edited but please note that once submitted information in the fields Name, Surname, Date of birth, and the information about referees cannot be modified.

3. After submission of an application, the system will display a list of Host institutions and Referees with their corresponding links. The same information will be sent by e-mail to the candidate to be distributed.

Realizing the potential of Cultural Diversity in the society and at the workplace

There is hardly any large society that is presently ethnically homogenous as a result of domestic and international migration. The foreign-populations of many societies are increasing at unprecedented rates. For instance, it has been estimated that by 2050, 85% of Australia‘s population growth will be either from overseas migration or from native born Australians who have at least one foreign-born parent. Europe will need 80 million immigrants by 2030, while the US, Japan and Canada will need 35 million, 17 million, and 11 million immigrants by 2030, respectively (Saunders, 2010).

The aging population of the world, particularly in Western industrialized countries, and unemployment and economic stagnation in many countries, will put pressure on the economies of Western industrialized countries in the form of increased migration, bringing people of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds together in ways that have never been seen before.

These demographic changes have wide range of implications for the governance of nation-building including employment, health, education, housing, economics, politics, culture, intergroup relationships and so forth.  Depending on which angle one takes, the results can be either positive or negative.  Unfortunately, events such as the terror attacks in major European cities including Madrid (2004), in London (2005) and in Oslo/Utøya (Norway, 2011) together with the Danish cartoon drawings of Mohammed are some negative instances of intercultural relations.  European leaders have not fared any better when they incite skepticism by suggesting that multiculturalism has been a failure. These pessimistic statements undermine and diminish the positive aspects of cultural diversity.

It is within this context that this conference is organized, with the theme – Realizing the potential of cultural diversity.

Realizing the potential of cultural diversity in the workplace and society will challenge societies politically, economically, socially, legally and culturally. This challenge will require a parallel effort to achieve equity and full participation of all cultural communities in the larger society. Any discussion around the topics will require a multi-disciplinary approach.  Hence the planned conference will attract scholars from psychology, and many related fields and disciplines. Indeed the ultimate goal of this conference will be to bring to Bergen the leading scholars of the world to share research findings, engage in dialogue on how to tap into the positive sides of cultural diversity, and how employers, institutions, and governments can realize its potential. The conference will include Keynote presentations by leading scholars, symposia, individual papers, posters and round table discussions, including debates. During the past three conferences, the Academy has also devoted a whole day to a workshop – Fellows’ Day – just before the opening of the conference where the Fellows of the Academy engage in a series of discussions regarding the conference theme.

Administratively, the Department of Psychosocial Science is responsible for the running of the conference, but the practical activities regarding the conference will be coordinated by the Society and Workplace Diversity Research group in close collaboration with the Congress Bureau (Kongress og Kultur – KK-Bergen). While the Research Group will be responsible for the scientific side of the conference, the all practical organization will be taken care of by the Congress Bureau.
