Intercultural communication (IC) scholars in the CSCA region have often been questioned and sometimes challenged by scholars who have claimed that the Midwest is not an ideal locale for studying communication across cultures and among people from varying cultural backgrounds. However, over the years, scholars have established that intercultural communication is an important area of scholarship in the Midwest (and beyond), and that the region offers plenty of opportunities for studying the intersections of cultural perspectives in communication, ranging from racial and ethnic discrimination to the adaptation process of international students and from immigrant experiences to issues in queer cultures.

IC scholars not only have borrowed from communication research in other areas (both theoretically and methodologically) but also have contributed widely to the discussion on cultural issues as they relate to many areas of communication research. In this special issue, our goal is to present different aspects of intercultural communication research as they connect to and intersect with sub-disciples such as media studies, communication education, international communication, rhetorical studies, gender and sexuality studies, family communication, listening, popular culture, and organizational communication.

Because IC research does not exist in isolation, and it is always connected to larger frameworks or theoretical approaches within communication studies, contributors to this special issue should address how IC scholarship informs other areas of research and how IC scholars use the concepts and theoretical lenses of IC research to examine issues outside of IC. Although we focus on IC scholarship within the CSCA region, our scope extends beyond this regional boundary as well.

This call invites abstracts for a special issue that uses different methodological approaches; however, we highly encourage submissions of projects that take qualitative, interpretive, and critical and cultural perspectives in examining the connections between intercultural communication scholarship, and scholarship in other areas of communication studies.

Abstracts are due by March 15, 2017, with a word length of no more than 200 words (not counting references, contact information, and a short bio of 100 words). Full-length manuscripts are due on July 15, 2017, with a word length of no more than 5,000-7,000 words and in APA style, including references, endnotes, and so forth. National Communication Association

NCA seeks proposals for activities that promote scholarship and teaching of Communication Studies to benefit emerging democracies and their peoples. Such activities may include (but are not limited to) the following:
*International travel for residents of emerging democracies to attend conferences or advanced training in Communication Studies
*International travel for U.S. residents to disseminate Communication scholarship or to conduct training in Communication Studies in emerging democracies
*Procuring and disseminating scholarly and instructional materials in Communication Studies for use by institutions within emerging democracies
*Research about various topics in communication conducted by residents of emerging democracies who would otherwise lack adequate support for such research
*Research about communication phenomena in emerging democracies, which may be conducted by U.S. scholars or by others, and which promises to directly or indirectly promote effective communication practices

General Procedures for Proposals
Proposals should not exceed 10 pages and shall include the following information:
(1)      a rationale for considering the target nation an emerging democracy;
(2)      a clear statement of methods or listing of activities, depending on the nature of the proposal;
(3)      a clear statement of expected outcomes and their relationship to the purpose of the grant;
(4)      a clear statement of the intended use of monies provided by the grant;
(5)      an abbreviated, 3 page CV of applicant or principal investigator.

“Reclaiming Stigma: Alternative Explorations of the Construct”

Communication research on identity issues tends to nominally reference seminal works from previous decades and then proceed to study specific, affected groups. Particularly in cases of research on stigmatized identities, scholars tend to cite Goffman (1963). With few exceptions, the nuances of this construct – a subject of potentially great interest to communication scholars – are rarely explored.

Despite the advent of increasingly immediate forms of interpersonal and public communication, the use of labels, interpersonal behaviors, and complicated rhetorical constructions related to stigma have become more taken-for-granted by scholars using methods of social framing and influence. In descending order of typical approaches by Communication scholars, published research has examined (a) if and then who is stigmatized, (b) how it affects that particular group of people, and (c) what can or should be done about it, with the latter technique inclining toward simplistic prescription of a “stop doing it” admonishment. Missing from this discussion is examination of the construction of stigma.

Rather than simplistically labeling a group as “stigmatized” and/or jumping to the assumption that this label is always negative, a more complex examination would search for the underlying mechanisms at play. This special issue of Communication Studies seeks to address this dearth in the field by seeking diverse scholarship to scrutinize the issue and provoke scholarly controversy by exploring the nature of stigma. For example:
*When can stigma be good? In what ways might it be productive to reinforce stigma of particular groups? Perhaps some identities (e.g., Homophobes? Misogynists? Abusers? KKK? Liberals? Conservatives?
Celebrities?) should be stigmatized. What would be the implications of those practices?
*When is stigma bad? What are the communicative implications when using stigma? Do stigmas reflect a shorthand attribution of group membership?
*Can an individual be stigmatized without reference to group membership?
*How has stigma operated, in past or present-day cultures, desirably?
*If we should stigmatize, how would we decide who/what to stigmatize?
*Who, or what, would determine which stigmas to enforce – interpersonally and/or culturally?
*Is stigma really an arbitrary decision made to effect serious, negative consequences (e.g., social exclusion/discrimination, punishment)?
*If stigma is a created and fixable difference, what are actual, feasible means (i.e., applied stigma management tactics – personal and political) to address interpersonal stigma for those affected – interpersonally and societally?

All scholars of Communication embracing diverse theoretical and methodological perspectives are invited. Original works referencing current, societal exemplars are encouraged. Both full-length manuscripts exploring these phenomena (through application of personal research or analyses) and shorter critical thought-pieces are welcome. Whatever the approach, this issue will go beyond simple designation of stigmatized identities to explore the stigma in all its intricacies – standard and contentious.

All manuscripts will be subjected to a process of blind peer-review.

The Department of Communication Studies at the University of Denver invites applications for a three year, annually renewable, Lecturer-Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow with a specific focus on migration and/or diaspora studies, to begin September 1, 2012.

The Department of Communication Studies grants the B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees. The graduate program is focused on three areas of inquiry: Culture and Communication, Interpersonal and Family Communication, and Rhetoric and Communication Ethics. Given faculty research and teaching foci we are particularly interested in applicants who have teaching and research interests in Communication, transnationalism, diaspora, and/or migration. Scholars with research and teaching foci in the areas of African diaspora studies, citizenship studies, and diaspora studies, and/or queer diaspora studies are particularly welcome. We seek to participate in the process of preparing recent Ph.D. recipients for tenure track positions and careers in academia. A central component of this position is mentoring; thus, a faculty mentor will be assigned to our new colleague. Eligible applicants are individuals who have received the Ph.D. in Communication no earlier than May 2009. The person hired will be expected to teach six courses over three quarters (two courses a quarter).

The Postdoctoral Fellow will contribute to the University’s Common Curriculum and the major of the department of Communication Studies. Given these needs, in consultation with the Dean’s Office, the following courses are likely possibilities.
