The University of Canterbury invites applications for a Visiting Fellowship available for our Term 4: approximately mid September to mid October 2016.  The fellow is expected to offer a number of research seminars to staff/students and meet graduate research students to provide general advice and feedback. We are happy to invite you to participate in the ECREA European Media and Communication Doctoral Summer School 2016 that will take place at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Milan, Italy, from July 25 to August 5, 2016.

THE FOCUS
The ECREA European Media and Communication Doctoral Summer School 2016 brings together members of the European research community in order to debate contemporary issues in media, communication and cultural studies. The main emphasis of this summer school is not on a particular theme, but on providing structural and individuated PhD-support for young European scholars, through a variety of working forms, including feedback seminars, workshops, and lectures. The summer school aims to provide a supportive international setting where doctoral students can present their ongoing work, receive feedback on their PhD-projects from international experts and meet students and academics from other countries, establishing valuable contacts for the future.

HOW TO APPLY
There are two options to attend the Summer School:

For students whose universities are members of the organizing consortium the summer school will provide:

DEADLINE

The transition of communication media to digital is a worldwide phenomenon. In Central and Eastern Europe the term “transition” is naturally assumed to mean democratic transition in the postsocialist period starting in 1990. For the past 25 years, many in these countries struggled to establish independent media industries with new democratic expectations and in a capitalist market environment. The focus was very much on the political and economic postsocialist transition, including in research in media and communication studies.

In this years’ CEECOM we wish to refocus on the challenges to media industries, media audiences, and media regulators posed by the digital transition in the Central and Eastern European region and beyond. Since today’s media have an increasingly global dimension that is manifesting together with the digital technology, we aim to discuss the manifestations of these global developments and their challenges in a regional setting.

The journalistic profession is having a hard time facing the challenges of the digital revolution and global economy, but also the pressures of commercial interests and the need for new competences of young journalists. As a result of that process, the trust citizens have in state institutions and mass media has been significantly declining. Some warn that the corruption of basic journalistic values – through infotainment, the imperative of speed and the use of digital technologies to raise the popularity instead of quality – has been undermining the very foundations of democracy. The citizens, paradoxically, are surrounded with media offer that has never been wider, while they have never been less involved. New possibilities for participation in the digital public sphere are being used in different ways by different people, are there patterns here that we can uncover?

While digital technology defines today’s media, the key to their understanding is beyond a technological utopia or dystopia, in the new social practices that media afford – in media production and use, in changing public communication, media organization and production, journalism practice and the role of audiences. Social media, user-generated content, crowdsourcing, rise of alternative media, networked distribution and promotion of content and participatory agenda setting characterize today’s media landscapes that comprise both the legacy and the digital media. Today’s mediatized cultures can no longer be observed outside of the media that facilitate them, but need to be investigated in their articulations of everyday lifeworlds.

In our attempt to understand the present manifestations of digital mediascapes, we might also examine how the socialist economic and political settings and normative assumptions of the role of media influence contemporary post-socialist institutional settings and the development of digital media cultures.

Some of the topics for which we invite contributions include, but are not limited to:

*Education, knowledge and learning, play and entertainment
*Sociality – social spaces created around and through use of communication technology, belonging – foundation of social bonds and social integration, communities they create, how they engage in politics or civic activities

*Digital democracy – mediatized political communication, digital citizenship, participation and the digital public sphere

*At the professional level: changing practice of journalists; multi-platform reporting; role of social media in daily reporting, especially in stories and sources identification and interaction; new relations with audiences, participatory and collaborative journalism.
*At the media output level: pluralism and quality of content, its availability and usability and, in general, public interest
*Digital Skills for the New Approach to Journalism Education
*Development of the new digital skills and the basis for the new journalism education curricula – new forms of reporting, new genres in digital media, data analysis and storytelling

The conference will work in plenary (keynote and special panels) and parallel/paper sessions. Abstracts will be double blind reviewed by members of the Scientific Committee.

Conference Participants
The conference aims to promote academic cooperation in the field of media and communication studies, broadly defined in a way to include trans-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary approaches to media and communication, within the Central and Eastern European region and beyond. While the primary focus of the conference is on sharing and discussing new research, the conference takes a multi-stakeholder approach to underline the importance of dialogue between scholars of media, political science, sociology, regulators and policy makers, international and national experts, practitioners, as well as representatives of regulatory authorities and civil society organizations.

Co-authored proposals are accepted, including those written by master students and their academic supervisors. The participants are invited to register and to submit original papers and panels. No more than two submissions by one author can be accepted (including combinations of panels and individual papers).

Participants do not need to be members of any of the sponsoring academic associations. The event is also open to participants who do not plan to submit research proposals. All accepted attendees are asked to register for the Conference.

Submission, Registration and Important Dates
Conference language: English. Individual paper proposals addressed to one of the proposed topics should mention this in the proposal (other topics on CEE issues are welcome as well). Abstracts (of max. 300 words) will be evaluated by at least two members of the Scientific Committee. Panel proposals of 300 – 500 words should include the rationale and title of proposed panel, and name & affiliation of the Chair/Moderator and up to five members of the panel, and brief abstracts (150 words) for each participant’s contribution. Abstract & panel submission site will open on November 20, and individual paper and panel proposal can be uploaded until 20 December, 23:59 CET. The reviews will be completed and notifications sent by 31 January 2015.

Globalization is not new to Africa, as histories of global conquest and colonial/postcolonial intervention have shaped the continent in recent centuries: the exploits of European explorers, traders and missionaries leading to the so-called ‘scramble for Africa’ and the division of the continent at the Berlin conference of 1884-85; post-independence alignments during the Cold War; and post-Cold War colonization via ideological and political economic processes and structures. However, to the extent that globalization is a process of neoliberal integration of economies and cultures, sub-Saharan Africa has lagged behind other regions of the world and the overwhelming majority of Africans have not benefited from the spread of the global economy. Scholars today argue that Africa’s continued marginalization and exploitation are sustained by new hegemonic powers in Asia that benefit from Africa’s resources. China’s emergence as an economic superpower and its enormous and escalating investment in Africa must be included in analyses of Africa and globalization, as Africa’s global integration is no longer determined predominantly by Western interests. In her popular TED talk Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Adichie speaks eloquently of Africa’s ‘single story’ of victimization, a narrative that contributes to Africa’s enduring erasure in Western media via homogenization, denial of agency, and economic dependence. At the same time, an overarching ‘single story’ discourse overshadows the production and distribution of media content by and for Africans. Further, the historic global movements of African peoples and cultures suggests many untold and under-told stories of globalization, stories unfolding at a rapid pace with growing technology and internet access. The spread of technology raises many questions, such as: in what ways do technologies impose alien values on African communities and/or extend indigenous values?

This special issue of CCC on Africa seeks diverse studies that critically address and illuminate 21st century stories about media and globalization relevant to Africa at multiple levels of observation and analysis. CCC is primarily a qualitative journal of the International Communication Association that publishes critical and interpretive research in media, communication, and cultural studies. Articles may focus primarily on phenomena relevant to one country, group or region, or may be comparative (one example might be the media’s contemporary role in evangelism and homosexuality legislation). Articles may address any aspect of media and globalization, including discourses, practices and structures of: journalism; popular culture (film, television, music, celebrity philanthropy, tourism promotion, beauty pageants, etc.); information and communication technologies (ICTs); foreign aid; and/or infrastructure investment, particularly in telecommunications.

Theoretical and methodological approaches may vary consistent with the guidelines of the journal as long as they contribute to our knowledge and conceptual understanding of media and globalization and relate directly to Africa.

Authors should email an abstract (500 words) to Leslie Steeves by August 15, 2014. The editor and consulting editors will review all submissions and successful authors will be invited to submit a full manuscript. Abstracts and manuscripts must be in English. Authors of selected abstracts will be notified of acceptance by October 15, 2014. Full papers will be subject to anonymous peer review, and full papers are due by February 15, 2015.

The position is located at the Department of Communication within the Faculty of Humanities. The Department houses four disciplines: Organizational Communication, Speech Communication, Journalism and Intercultural Communication. Each of the four disciplines offers postgraduate studies. The aim of the Department is to conduct high quality research of communication and offer high-level and diverse academic education in communication.

The research and education activities focus on: (1) Media and Communication in Social Processes of Change, (2) Human Interaction, Communication and Culture and (3) Communication and Well-Being in Work and Learning Environments. The Department’s teaching and research staff consists of seven professors and nine other teachers and researchers. In addition, the Department has 10–12 temporary researchers. The number of students with Communication as their main subject is approx. 550 and the annual intake of students is 80. The number of postgraduate students is 70.

Intercultural Communication includes both the Master’s Programme in Intercultural Communication and doctoral schooling, and has a professor and a university lecturer in its staff. The Intercultural Communication Master’s Programme has 60 students and 6 doctoral students. The studies prepare for careers in communication involving significant intercultural contact.

Research activities within Intercultural Communication focus on interaction in multicultural settings. The core areas are intercultural competence, and communication in multicultural communities and organizations. The challenges of internationality and multiculturality in both interpersonal and organizational communication as well as various media contexts will be met by applying research results.

A professorship in Intercultural Communication, based on a contract of employment to be filled as of August 1st, 2012, in effect until further notice

According to § 33 of the Universities Act, the professor shall carry out and supervise scientific research or artistic work, provide instruction based on such work and follow developments in science or art, as well as participate in societal interaction and international cooperation in his or her field.

According to § 67 of the University of Jyväskylä Regulations, members of the teaching and research staff are obliged, within their respective job descriptions and work plan, to conduct and supervise scientific research, follow the developments in their respective disciplines, examine theses and dissertations, teach and enhance teaching practices, provide study counseling, carry out relevant examinations, take part in the student selection process, as well as attend to tasks ensuing from memberships in the administrative bodies of the University and to other tasks counted as part of their work or assigned to them. In addition, they are to provide the necessary reports concerning their teaching and supervising activities, publications and scientific activity in general, and the examinations belonging to their sphere of responsibilities.

The professorship is closely associated with two of the University’s strategic core areas, Languages, Culture and Social Change and Human Technology.

The professor is expected to conduct research on interaction in multicultural settings and must have a profound knowledge of the discipline. The professor is also expected to conduct and develop research and teaching within the Department’s focus areas, which presupposes applying for supplementary research funding. The duties also include developing interdisciplinary research and education in accordance with the strategic objectives of both the Department and the University of Jyväskylä. The professor will also be expected to participate in the administration of the Department.

In addition, the duties include teaching, supervision and development activities regarding the Intercultural Communication Master’s Programme, the Intercultural Communication specialization option of the Interactions Master’s Programme, commencing in 2012, as well as the Doctoral Programme in Intercultural Communication. The professor will also be responsible for the Intercultural Studies (ICS) Programme and participate in the development and implementation of the European Masters in Intercultural Communication Programme. The professor is also expected to cooperate closely with the other disciplines of the Department.

The emphasis in the work of the professor is on active research, and launching and implementing of research projects, as well as participation in joint international research and teaching activities. In addition, the tasks include supervision of doctoral dissertations and Master’s theses as well as providing instruction to basic degree levels and postgraduate level students.

In accordance with Section 57 of the University of Jyväskylä Regulations, a professor is required to have a doctoral degree, solid scientific competence, experience in leading research projects, ability to provide research-based teaching and supervising of high quality, as well as proven experience in international research cooperation in his/her field. Practical familiarity in the sphere of duties is not required.

The applicant’s merits are assessed on the basis of scientific publications, other scientific research results, experience in teaching and supervising, as well as pedagogical training, production of textbooks and other teaching materials, other indications of skills achieved in education, and if necessary, teaching ability as shown by trial lectures.

In addition to this, the applicant’s activeness in the scientific community, success in acquiring complementary research funding, as well as involvement in international scientific work and international positions of trust will also be considered.

According to Section 1 of the Government Decree on Universities (770/2009), which defines the language proficiency requirements for university teaching and research positions in Finland, a full command of the teaching language, Finnish, is required. The teaching languages in the professorship in Intercultural Communication to be filled are Finnish and English. A good command of English is required and a proficiency to teach in English will be considered an additional qualification. When considered appropriate, the university can grant exemption from the language proficiency requirements.

In accordance with Section 65 of the University of Jyväskylä Regulations, a professor is required to complete studies in university pedagogy or equivalent within two years of the beginning of the employment contract, unless studies have already been completed by the time of appointment. This prerequisite concerns all teaching staff whose employment starts on 1 August, 2012 or thereafter.

The professor’s job-specific salary component is based on the job demands levels 8 – 11 (4434,84 €/month – 6541,87 €/month) according to the salary system concerning teaching and research staff at universities. In addition, a personal performance-based salary component amounting to the maximum of 46,3% of the job-specific salary component is also paid.
