As we move further into the 21st century, issues of diversity and multiculturalism are becoming increasingly complex. The constant flows of persons, cultures, and ideas between and among nations not only intensify contact and connection among global citizens but also bring to the surface both emergent and perennial issues of difference, identity, territory, and environmental concerns. With expansive networks moving at breakthrough speeds and intensities, the very concepts of diversity and multiculturalism are changing, especially as they encounter forces of environmental change, nationalism, populism, and hegemony. What does it mean to live in a multicultural society?  How do we create community, resolve conflicts, in complicated religious, linguistic, educational, and cultural contexts?  What happens to minorities and indigenous peoples within larger majority cultures? The theme of this conference seeks to address these issues in the context of nations and the larger world.

As always, if there is a concept you think should be written up as one of the Key Concepts, whether in English or any other language, propose it. If you are new to CID, please provide a brief resume. This opportunity is open to masters students and above, on the assumption that some familiarity with academic conventions generally, and discussion of intercultural dialogue specifically, are useful.

The Integrative, Religious, and Intercultural Studies Department at Grand Valley State University invites applications for tenure-line faculty member (assistant professor) with specialization in political ecology, science and technology studies, and/or ethical practice studies with a social justice, social innovation, or transformative approach to broadly serve the department’s growing graduate program in Social Innovation and its undergraduate programs in Integrative Studies (formerly Liberal Studies), Religious Studies, and Intercultural Competence. The expected start date is August 2020. This position is intended to complement existing strengths in a vibrant department that practices and understands interdisciplinary studies as drawing from multiple disciplinary locations, working across and for cultural communities, and engaging with varied methodological and theoretical frameworks.

Work that connects experiences of individuals/groups within the United States to broader regional/global perspectives, including transnational, diasporic and comparative work, is particularly welcomed. Examples may include African and African American Studies, Indigenous and/or Native American Studies, LatinX Studies, Migration Studies, or the like.

CFP InterDISCIPLINARY Journal of Portuguese Diaspora Studies

“PublicationThe InterDISCIPLINARY Journal of Portuguese Diaspora Studies (IJPDS) welcomes original contributions for the annual issue of the journal to be published in 2020. Researchers in the Humanities and Social Sciences are encouraged to submit papers in final form by March 30, 2020.

IJPDS

IJPDS represents original scholarship receptive to interdisciplinary topics and theoretical contexts spanning the diversity and variety of research interests. Editors encourage proposals from a wide array of scholarly proveniences, approaches and perspectives that embrace a construct of Portuguese diaspora across time and space.

 

Manuscripts in English, Portuguese, Spanish, or French are accepted for review and must be accompanied by an abstract in English, as well as in the original language in which the paper is written. Papers that have already been published or are under consideration elsewhere will not be accepted in IJPDS.

IJPDS is a double-blind, peer-reviewed, scholarly journal with both print and online versions. The journal is published annually in the fall. Also part of this academic journal is the publication of special thematic issues that engage with aspects of Portuguese diaspora studies, both traditional and modern.

Alessia Maselli Profile

ProfilesAlessia Maselli is a graduate of the International Education M.A. program at New York University (USA), currently working as an Exchange Program officer at Bocconi University (Milan, Italy), contributing to managing the exchange experience of over 1000 incoming exchange students from 200+ partner universities.

Alessia Maselli

Her research interests focus on the impact of globalization on education: more specifically, she is interested in understanding the relationship between international education and political changes on the global level, in the internationalization of the curriculum in higher education through the lens of critical pedagogy, and, more largely, on the international student experience. As a dual Italian American citizen, Alessia’s deep understanding of the international student experience translated into a strong personal and academic passion for improving it, as demonstrated by her various leadership roles, such as that of Assistant Teacher in the New International Student Seminar at NYU.

Alessia also contributed to the translation from English to Italian of the two UNESCO pedagogical guides on the prevention of violent extremism through education, in collaboration with the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe (Venice, Italy) and the Centre for International Cooperation (Trento, Italy): A Teacher’s Guide on the Prevention of Violent Extremism (UNESCO, 2016) and Preventing violent extremism through education: a guide for policy-makers (UNESCO, 2017).
