CFP IAICS: Synergies in Intercultural communication (Macau)

The City University of Macau (CityU Macau) and the International Association for Intercultural Communication Studies (IAICS) will host the 28th International Conference of the International Association for Intercultural Communication Studies on 22-25 March 2023 at CityU Macau, Taipa campus. This year the theme is “Synergies in Intercultural Communication: Languages, Professions and Heritages”. Organizers would like to invite scholars, educators, administrators, graduates, and undergraduate students from all disciplines of cultural sciences, and related fields, to submit proposals to the conference.

The IAICS Conference 2023 focuses on interdisciplinary research in intercultural communication, using a variety of methodology for intercultural communication research and disseminating practical findings to facilitate understanding across cultures. It intends to enhance global intercultural sensitivity and involve educators, business professionals, and students worldwide in effective and satisfying dialogues about diversity and transcultural communication issues.

With expansive networks moving at breakthrough speeds and intensities, the very concepts of diversity and multiculturalism are changing, especially as they encounter forces of environmental change, nationalism, populism, and hegemony. What does it mean to live in a multicultural society?  How do we create community, resolve conflicts, in complicated religious, linguistic, educational, and cultural contexts?  What happens to minorities and indigenous peoples within larger majority cultures? The theme of this conference seeks to address these issues in the context of nations and the larger world.

CFP IAICS East/West: New Divisions, New Connections (Czech Republic)

ConferencesCall for papers: 25th International Conference of the International Association for Intercultural Communication Studies (IAICS): East/West: New Divisions, New Connections in a Populist Political Reality, July 12–15, 2019, Brno, Czech Republic. Deadline: November 15, 2018.

Proposals sought that aim to consider the following questions:

* How do cultural and communication scholars understand the shifting discourses around the “West” and its “Others”?
* How have – fictional and non-fictional – representations of the relationship between the “West” and “Others” evolved?
* How have the centre and the periphery been re-defined, re-imagined and re-negotiated?

CFP IAICS 2018 Communication & Dialogue: Integrating Global Communities

ConferencesThe International Association of Intercultural Communication Studies (IAICS) is now accepting submissions for the 24th international conference, to be held at DePaul University in Chicago, IL, USA, July 5-8, 2018. The deadline for submissions is November 1, 2017.

Conference Theme: Communication and Dialogue: Integrating Global Communities

There are two opposing perspectives that have resulted from today’s globalized world: One that promotes diversity, interconnectedness, and interdependence through open borders and intercultural collaboration as the antidote to the global problems of inequality, terrorism, and climate change. But not all subscribe to this notion, as another, more harmful view is characterized by ethnocentrism, prejudice, xenophobia, and implicit biases, which cause fear, exclusion, alienation, divisiveness, and violence. As intercultural communication scholars, it is our ethical responsibility to identify, analyze, and provide strategies and solutions to these problems and to create inclusive and integrated global communities through engaging intercultural and international dialogues. Integration of communities requires humanity to come together through compassion, empathy, shared values, common interests, and full participation of all people while acknowledging and respecting cultural differences. By sharing research from diverse interdisciplinary perspectives on intercultural and international issues, we can generate new ideas, new ways of thinking, and collective wisdom toward a brighter future.

IAICS 2017 (China)

IAICS 2017In today’s world, globalization erases boundaries and leads to increased contact among various languages and cultures. While human contact and migration have always been present throughout history, e.g., on the Silk Road, today’s media and transport capacities facilitate contact and communication to an exponentially greater extent than ever before. As a consequence, the phenomena of diversity, interculturality and hybridity are intensified. Juxtaposed to increased contact ensuing from globalization are both the positive and negative aspects of the protectionist efforts of localism. The theme of this conference seeks to examine the context of these problems within the spheres of education, language, culture, and society.

* Panel proposals reflecting the conference theme may be submitted. Panel proposals should include a 100-150 word abstract of each panelist’s paper (as above) and panelists must each individually complete the registration process (as below).
* The submissions will be evaluated by peer-review. There is a cap of 300 participants in the joint conference (see “Joint Conference” and registration information below).

Sample Abstract
The Development and Validation of the Intercultural Sensitivity Scale

The present study developed and assessed reliability and validity of a new instrument, the Intercultural Sensitivity Scale (ISS). Based on a review of the literature, 44 items thought to be important for intercultural sensitivity were generated for the purpose of analyses in this study. A sample of 414 college students rated these items and generated a 24-item final version of the instrument which contains five factors. An assessment of concurrent validity from 162 participants indicated that the ISS was significantly correlated with other related scales, including interaction attentiveness, impression rewarding, self-esteem, self-monitoring, and perspective taking. In addition, the predicted validity test from 174 participants showed that individuals with high ISS scores also scored high in intercultural effectiveness and intercultural communication attitude scales.
