The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (HaSS) is a large comprehensive Faculty with a broad academic profile and substantial research achievements. Teaching in the Faculty is underpinned by substantial research performance and several specialized fields of research were judged at the highest level (5 ranking) in the most recent Excellence in Research Australia (ERA) evaluation that concluded at the end of 2015. These research achievements internationally are reflected in the 2016 Leiden rankings (based on impact, not reputation), where the Humanities and Social Sciences at UQ ranks 21st in the world on the quantum of publications in ranked journals, placing us first in Australia and in the Oceania region (for the full data-set see http://www.leidenranking.com). The quality of our overall Faculty’s performance is also evident in the QS Top Universities Rankings for 2015 which places Social Sciences at UQ at 30th in the world, and Humanities in the top 50.

The Faculty’s Executive Dean is Professor Tim Dunne, who continues to be active in his field of political science alongside his leadership role.

The role
The successful appointee will provide assistance to the Executive Dean on a variety of research related tasks. In addition to research support, the successful applicant will prepare course materials for a new Masters course that is under development using the case study method. The post-holder will author or co-author the course materials as well as assist in the delivery and management of the course, including assisting the Executive Dean in promoting his research, and that of Political Science and International Studies/Humanities and Social Sciences, by managing his personal website and assisting with his social media profile.

The person
Applicants should possess a PhD specialising in one or more of the following areas: Internal Relations, Peace and Conflict Studies, or related field. Applicants should have at least two years’ full-time experience (during the PhD and/or otherwise), or its equivalent , in a relevant area of expertise. Experience in collaborative writing of scholarly papers and dissemination of research findings in relevant academic outlet is also required.

This is a full-time, fixed term appointment for 2.5 years at Research Academic Level A. The remuneration package will be in the range $79,170.68 – $84,985.56 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $92,629.69 – $99,433.10 p.a.).

U Queensland postdoc

The Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies (CCCS) at the University of Queensland (Brisbane, Australia) is seeking expressions of interest for applications for 3 year UQ Postdoctoral Research Fellowships for 2014-2016. The UQ postdoctoral scheme seeks to attract talented early career researchers with well-developed research programs and strong track records. The fellowships support full time research, although it is possible to organise some teaching experience if desired.

If successful the applicant will be based in the CCCS, a leading Australian research centre in the humanities that supports broad-ranging research in cultural and media studies. Current research emphases include the environmental humanities, surveillance studies, television studies, Australian cultural history, cinema studies, new materialities, celebrity, and media anthropology. The Centre provides a rigorous, supportive and collaborative research environment and has assisted many outstanding early career researchers to develop their research capacities and careers. It has also helped UQ earn top ERA rankings in cultural and media studies research.

Applicants for UQ Postdoctoral Fellowships must have no more than five years full time professional research experience or equivalent part time experience since the award of a Ph.D. An applicant who does not hold a doctoral degree at the time of application may be offered an appointment if evidence is subsequently provided that a doctoral thesis will be submitted by the end of 2013. Assessment criteria will include the excellence of the researcher and the quality of the research program to be undertaken. Applicants must have an outstanding track record relative to opportunity and a demonstrated capacity for undertaking original work. In addition, the selection process will consider the alignment of the proposed research with existing research strengths in the Centre. Typically, applicants have already published their work in top academic journals or have demonstrated similar research achievements.

The 2012 salary range for the award ranged from A$68,000 to $76,000 per annum based on experience. The fellowship also comes with maintenance funds (to be spent on research, travel, and equipment) totalling $20,000 over three years and relocation reimbursement. If you are selected to proceed to the next stage and submit a formal application to the UQ Postdoctoral Research Fellowships through the CCCS you will have until the end of May to prepare your application. Final dates for submission are not yet available but this is the usual timeframe.

University of Queensland

On February 24, 2012, I spent a day at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. My visit was sponsored by the School of Journalism and Communication, and included a formal presentation entitled “Interactional Resources for the ‘Problem’ of Intercultural Communication,” a lunch with faculty and graduate students, a data session on “Complex Constructions of Social Identity,” and a faculty dinner.

My thanks to Dr. Sean Rintel for organizing the entire event, and to Prof. Cindy Gallois for originally encouraging me to visit Brisbane. I met lots of new scholars, including Dr. Richard Fitzgerald, Dr. Shuang Liu, and Dr. Aparna Hebbani, and reconnected with Dr. Joan Mulholland, who created a quilted banner for the Language and Social Interaction division of the International Communication Association just as the division was being established in the mid-1990s.

One of the unexpected surprises was the extent to which the day’s activities were attended not only by faculty and graduate students from other Schools within UQ but also several from either nearby Griffith University and the Queensland University of Technology, and even a visitor from Linköping University in Sweden who was in town to present at QUT.

Over the weekend, there was time for a tour of the area with Sean Rintel and Cherie Gregoire, including some of the many parks in Brisbane, where the water dragons are so accustomed to humans they let us get very close for photos – this dragon is nearly 3 feet long and only about 2 feet away from me.
