Organizers at SIETAR Italia are currently working on the 2020 Programme of Events. Every year they ask members and non-members to deliver workshops, seminars, webinars or talks following their guidelines.

Are you interested in presenting an event in 2020?

The areas of greatest interest are:

•    Intercultural and multicultural socio-political contexts
•    Development of competencies and training of intercultural professionals
•    Intercultural communication in language education
•    Intercultural education in the European context

 

If you have any interesting contribution to offer (in English or Italian) on one of these subjects, please complete the Form for Events Proposals – 2020 Calendar, and send it to SIETAR Italia by the 30th of October 2019. Notices about what has been accepted will be sent by end of November 2019.

In Milan, most of the events are hosted for free by ChiAmaMilano, via Laghetto, 2 (near Duomo – Università Statale) which is run by the Milan Council. If you know of other venues in Milan or other cities, please mention them.

The 2020 Calendar of Events, as well as the one-off events, will be posted on the following channels: the SIETAR Italia website; the GLOBAL SIETAR calendar of events; Eventbrite, through the Newsletter (with a mailing list of 2500 contacts), the SIETAR Italia Facebook page, LinkedIn, Twitter and Instagram, as well as through partners’ communication channels.

Researcher ProfilesDr. Archana Shrivastava is Associate Professor & Head of the Business Communication Area at Birla Institute of Management Technology, India.

Archana ShrivastavaHaving worked at various universities and colleges, she has 19 years of research, teaching and training experience. Dr. Shrivastava earned her Ph.D. and M.A. in English literature from Dr. Hari Singh Gour University, Sagar in M.P. She is a Thomas certified professional and can perform Personal Profile Analysis (PPA) and Human Job Analysis (HJA). She is trained to teach “Business English Certificate Course and is also an active member of the Association for Business Communication, Communication Institute of Greece, and Eastern Communication Association.

Her current research and publications are in the areas of cross-cultural communication, leadership, team building, skill development. She has participated and presented papers in various conferences both in India and abroad. She has authored numerous case studies and research papers published in journals like IVEY, Emerald,  and Case Centre (European Case Clearing House). She is a recipient of a travel grant awarded by AICTE in 2015 to present her research at Columbia University in New York. She is the recipient of the best paper award in 2017 at the conference in Oxford University, and in 2018 in the international conference at Teri University.

Dr. Shrivastava has more than 19 years of academic experience to teach/train a variety of courses including: Business Communication, Soft Skills, Business Etiquette, Handling Interviews, Presentation Skills, Nonverbal Communication, Audience Analysis, Crisis Communication, Conflict Management, Negotiation Skills, Intercultural Communication, and Empathic Listening. She has been conducting trainings and Management Development Programmes (MDPs) for senior executives of several renowned  organizations and PSUs in India, including NTPC, NHPC, GAIL, IFFCO, and Power Grid. She has also been mentoring and developing students in the area of Soft Skills, especially People Skills.

Center for Intercultural Leadership
The Center for Intercultural Leadership (CIL) is a center of excellence for training and research to advance leadership, understanding and collaboration across cultures. CIL offers programs and trainings for International House, the UC Berkeley campus, the corporate world, and not-for-profit organizations.

Responsibilities
We are in search of a unique candidate to join our dynamic Intercultural Leadership team. This position reports to the Director of CIL. The successful candidate will be an experienced technical leader with a high degree of knowledge in the field and recognized expertise in specific areas. Problem-solving frequently requires analysis of unique issues/problems without precedent and/or structure. May manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources. Functions with a high degree of autonomy. Serves as liaison with campus and community groups who have interest in the field of intercultural communication. The position will have some or all of the following responsibilities:

Program/Curriculum Design and Planning
• Researches and develops new workshop curriculum for other intended audiences
• Improves design of current intercultural professional development workshops for staff, student and corporate/non-profit populations
• Uses considerable discretion to determine methods and procedures for current and new course offerings and topics
• Actively participates in long-range strategic planning for I-House intercultural education and training programs
• Coordinates instructor objectives with methods of instruction;

The Department of Communication Studies seeks outstanding applicants who will complement the current faculty, for two tenure-track positions:

Position 1 (AA # 25-3-266) seeking applicants with teaching and research interests in Intercultural Communication, and can contribute to the department and university commitment to Global and Multicultural Education.  An interest in International Communication Processes, Training, Global Communication Strategies, Intergroup Relations, Sexual Identity, LBGTQ Studies and/or Gender Communication would be of added value.

Position 2 (AA # 25-3-267) seeking applicants with teaching and research interests in Leadership and Strategic Communication, who can contribute to the department and university commitment to developing campus leadership and Civic Engagement and one or more of the following areas: Small Group Communication, Leadership and Team Building, Persuasion, Computer Applications for Professional Communicators, Corporate Communication, Training, Interviewing, and/or Business and Professional Communication. The successful applicants for both positions will teach Public Speaking and/or Interpersonal Communication as part of their regular load as well as other courses as the department needs, and will be encouraged to develop additional special topics courses in their area.

Candidates will demonstrate ongoing excellence in teaching/student advisement, research and service.   Voluntary summer and winter term contracts may be available. Instructional delivery opportunities available for faculty include developing online and off campus courses.  Teaching load is a “four/four.”

QUALIFYING EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION
Earned Ph.D. or doctorate in Communication Studies or related field from an accredited institution with a strong academic background is required by August 22, 2014. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations preferred. Finalist(s) for this position must communicate well and successfully complete an interview process and/or teaching demonstration, as judged by the department faculty. Recommendation for hiring is needed from a majority of the regular, full-time faculty within the area or department conducting the search.

CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST:
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF INTERCULTURAL RELATIONS EDITOR IN CHIEF

Expressions of interest are called for the position of Editor-in-Chief, International Journal of Intercultural Relations, for a 3-year term, commencing 1 January, 2015.
The journal is the official publication of the International Academy for Intercultural Research. IJIR is dedicated to advancing knowledge and understanding of theory, research and practice in the field of intercultural relations, including, but not limited to, topics such as acculturation; intercultural communication; intergroup perceptions, contact, and interactions; intercultural training; and cultural diversity in education, organizations and society. The journal  currently receives between 275-300 submissions per annum, primarily from scholars in the discipline of psychology and secondarily from communication, but submissions come from a wide variety of disciplines. The Editor-in-Chief is currently supported by two Associate Editors.

Please direct Expressions of Interest to ijir AT vuw.ac.nz by 1 December, 2013. The EoIs should include a cv, with particular attention to editorial experience, and a statement of your vision for IJIR.  Past editorial experience and a supportive institutional environment are desirable.  It is also expected that the successful candidate will be (or become) a Member or Fellow of the International Academy of Intercultural Research.

The development of intercultural competence among medical students

Project description: There is growing recognition of the need to develop intercultural competence among medical students, and this is reflected in the GMC’s Tomorrow’s Doctors 2009 and DoH’s the Race Equality Action 2004. But research suggests that intercultural training lacks coherence in UK medical schools, and the situation of international students is also a source of concern. Within this problem-space, this studentship addresses 3 questions at the interface of medical education and linguistic ethnography:

– what kinds of contribution to intercultural competence development derive from which settings, taking into account the full range of formal and informal contexts in which medical students participate?

– how far and in what ways are the intercultural learning needs of home and international students complementary or divergent?

– what are the implications for training?

Objectives for each year:
Year 1: a. review training frameworks and facilities available in UK medical schools; b. develop research skills c. design research tools year
Year 2: a. conduct ethnographic investigation with medical students at KCL
Year 3: a. analysis data; b. consider publications in journals and conferences
Year 4: write up and disseminate results.

The studentship will draw on training provided both by the Centre for Language Discourse & Communication and the College’s ESRC Doctoral Training Centre, and it will be affiliated to the DTC’s Education, Mind and Society Theme.

Seeking Submissions to International Journal of Intercultural Relations

The International Journal of Intercultural Relations (IJIR) is an international peer-reviewed journal dedicated to advancing knowledge and understanding of theory, research and practice in the field of intercultural relations. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: intergroup perceptions, contact, and interactions; multiculturalism; acculturation; intercultural communication; intercultural training; and cultural diversity in education, organizations and society. The journal is indexed multiple data bases, including SSCI, PsycINFO, Current Contents/Social and Behavioral Sciences, Research Alert ASSIA, and SCOPUS.

After 35 years under the direction of the founding editor, Dan Landis, the journal’s editorship passed to Colleen Ward earlier this year. IJIR now has two Associate Editors: Hee Sun Park and Gabriel Horenczyk and a number of new additions to the editorial board.

We are currently seeking new, innovative, high quality manuscripts- both empirical and review articles- for submission. The current publication lag is short, and we invite contributions that will sustain and enhance the journal’s profile.
