International House residences were founded in Berkeley, New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia, as well as several dozen sister student residences around the world.

I-House (as it’s known) had the goal of bringing about intercultural dialogue from its founding. The initial idea of establishing international student dorms was the result of the discovery that some of these students were having difficulties in meeting locals. John D. Rockefeller, Jr. provided the funding for the US facilities in New York, Berkeley, and Chicago, as well as one in Paris (now a language school), through the 1920s and 1930s (the one in Philadelphia found separate funding).

International House…is a place where outstanding postgraduates from all over the world live together and learn about the similarities that bind them regardless of their race, religion, or country of origin.

I-House in Berkeley was particularly controversial, as not only a vehicle for international and interracial student housing but “the first co-educational residence west of the Mississippi” when it was built in 1930; all of these were uncommon at the time, and thus controversial. I-House Philadelphia was built later than the others in 1970, and the residence closed in 2019, although the organization still supports international students.

All of the I-Houses work not only to facilitate integration of international students with one another and local residents, but to bring international cultures to locals through cultural celebrations and educational programs. I-House Philadelphia was particularly active in this area, through the establishment of a Folklife Center hosting frequent events, as well as the Philadelphia Festival of World Cinema in the 1970s (the latter became the Lightbox Film Center, and still exists). Today I-House Berkeley is particularly strong in creating activities to strengthen ties across residents, as through their  Center for Intercultural Leadership Programs.

From UC Berkeley’s I-House comes the storytelling podcast From All Corners. Featuring an array of I-House residents, the project was born of the notion that powerful stories can inspire intercultural learning and make friends out of strangers. Each episode is a jolt of empathy—spotlighting true stories about the people we meet, the heartbreaks we suffer, the lessons we learn, those frightful experiences that unravel us, and the moments of wonder that shape us.

Six episodes were produced between September 2019 and February 2020. Due to Covid, in March 2020, the podcast narrowed to a series entitled Under the Dome ” to help us feel the community of being under the I-House Dome — even if we’re now in different places across the globe.” Another 17 episodes were produced through May 2020, at which point the series ended.

This podcast would make a good classroom resource for teaching about intercultural communication generally, or intercultural dialogue specifically. See KC5: Intercultural Communication or KC1: Intercultural Dialogue, as well as other Key Concepts in Intercultural Dialogue published by this Center.

International House is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit, self-supporting residential and community-oriented program center located in the southeast foothills of the Berkeley Campus.  Since its founding in 1930 with a gift from John D. Rockefeller, Jr., it has housed more than 90,000 residents including two Governors of California and eight Nobel Prize laureates. Its mission is to foster intercultural respect and understanding among people throughout the world across cultural, economic, and ethnic lines.  Each year I-House provides some 1,100 students and scholars from the United States and around the world with an opportunity to live and learn together over the course of a typical 12-month cycle.  I-House’s rich array of programs serves the residents, the campus and local community.

Under the direction of the Chief of Strategy / Director of the Robertson Center of Intercultural Leadership, the Director of Admissions and Housing Operations is responsible for marketing, recruitment, selection, and placement for approximately 585 spaces at International House during the calendar year representing about 80% of the organization’s annual operating revenue of approximately $13.5 million.  In addition, the incumbent supervises the Admissions and Housing team consisting of 3.5 career staff:  Assistant Director, Housing Coordinator, Front Desk Coordinator and ½ Resident Account Manager, and approximately 10 part-time student staff.  Additionally, the incumbent will oversee the Resident Service Center, comprising one career staff (Storekeeper) and 7-8 student workers.

During the summer, the House operates as the equivalent of a conference center and houses over 700 residents. Residents include graduate and undergraduate students, visiting scholars and researchers from various laboratories affiliated with the University.  The Director also recruits groups and individuals, negotiates rates and manages the contracts with summer and academic year groups and individuals.  Also responsible for developing and implementing programs for student outreach, recruitment and admission for residency at International House; determining admissions requirements, policies and processes; managing or performing the administrative services or managing the full general operations of a non-academic organization. General management includes long- and short-range strategic planning in directing all activities of multi-disciplinary functions through subordinate staff.  In collaboration with the Executive Office, oversees the Financial Aid program for U.S. residents, including the evaluation of applications and distribution of over $225,000 in scholarship funds.

In addition to ensuring maximum occupancy of I-House, the incumbent is also responsible for providing safe, comfortable, and welcoming accommodations for all students and visiting scholars who choose to live at I-House. We continue to strive for an inclusive community that embraces all residents and upholds the well-established community standards and the mission of I-House. Collaborate with staff to solve complex problems that may arise, particularly during move-in/move-out times as well as during the calendar year.

Create, organize and maintain the student employee handbook and database with relevant policies, resources and guidelines. Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in Intercultural Communications or related field from accredited university
Working knowledge of UC Berkeley campus, colleges, schools and departments and their services and functions
Ability to speak, read and write at least one language other than English

Hiring Range: $4375.00 minimum Monthly – 6691.67 midpoint Monthly
