Frederick Douglass Fellowships 2015-16

Frederick Douglass Scholars Fellowship Summer 2015 – May 2016

In keeping with Frederick Douglass’ life of public service and commitment to equity and access, the Frederick Douglass Institutes of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) are offering teaching opportunities to graduate students who are pursuing careers as university faculty and who are entering the final year of terminal degree and/or doctoral programs.  As a Frederick Douglass Scholars Fellow, scholars will teach and/or co-teach during the summer session(s) or full academic year (depending on term of appointment), continue their research, and contribute to the life of the university.  Dates of employment vary among universities, but typically run during May –August 2015 for summer appointments, or August 2015-May 2016 for full year appointments.

The Douglass Scholars Fellowships are designed to provide teaching and other professional experiences, mentoring, and potential employment opportunities within universities that are strongly committed to cultural diversity.  Applicants from diverse cultural backgrounds, especially those from historically underrepresented groups, are encouraged to apply, as are candidates whose research, teaching, or service have prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Scholars will be compensated as adjunct faculty, according to each university’s collective bargaining agreement.  Additionally, Fellows may be provided housing and travel. The appointment is for the scholar alone, not families, and scholars are responsible for their own local transportation.  Faculty benefits (office space, computer and network access, and library privileges) are also provided.

Minimum requirements are: Applicant must be U.S. citizen or permanent resident; MA degree completed and enrollment in a terminal degree program (Ph.D., MFA, Ed. D, etc.); academic background in one of the disciplines taught at the university.  Preferred: teaching experience; currently ABD or doctorate within last two years.  Priority consideration given to completed applications postmarked by January 19, 2015.

Two new Tenure-Track positions at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania

POSITION DESCRIPTIONS
The Department of Communication Studies seeks outstanding applicants who will complement the current faculty, for two tenure-track positions:

Position 1 (AA # 25-3-266) seeking applicants with teaching and research interests in Intercultural Communication, and can contribute to the department and university commitment to Global and Multicultural Education.  An interest in International Communication Processes, Training, Global Communication Strategies, Intergroup Relations, Sexual Identity, LBGTQ Studies and/or Gender Communication would be of added value.

Position 2 (AA # 25-3-267) seeking applicants with teaching and research interests in Leadership and Strategic Communication, who can contribute to the department and university commitment to developing campus leadership and Civic Engagement and one or more of the following areas: Small Group Communication, Leadership and Team Building, Persuasion, Computer Applications for Professional Communicators, Corporate Communication, Training, Interviewing, and/or Business and Professional Communication. The successful applicants for both positions will teach Public Speaking and/or Interpersonal Communication as part of their regular load as well as other courses as the department needs, and will be encouraged to develop additional special topics courses in their area.

Candidates will demonstrate ongoing excellence in teaching/student advisement, research and service.   Voluntary summer and winter term contracts may be available. Instructional delivery opportunities available for faculty include developing online and off campus courses.  Teaching load is a “four/four.”

QUALIFYING EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION
Earned Ph.D. or doctorate in Communication Studies or related field from an accredited institution with a strong academic background is required by August 22, 2014. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations preferred. Finalist(s) for this position must communicate well and successfully complete an interview process and/or teaching demonstration, as judged by the department faculty. Recommendation for hiring is needed from a majority of the regular, full-time faculty within the area or department conducting the search.

The Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania is currently soliciting applications for the Internet Policy Observatory Post Doctoral Fellowship or Scholar in Residence at the Center for Global Communication Studies.  The Post Doctoral Fellow will help develop and manage existing research programs surrounding the Internet Policy Observatory, and develop his/her own independent related research agenda in the area of global internet policy.

Annenberg’s Center for Global Communication Studies (CGCS) is a leader in international education and training in comparative media law and policy. The Center’s research and policy work addresses issues of media regulation, media and democracy, measuring and evaluation of media development programs, public service broadcasting, and the media’s role in conflict and post-conflict environments.

The Internet Policy Observatory is a multi-component project with a collaborative network and the goal of assessing incipient Internet policy and governance shifts in key national fora where restrictive approaches are being considered. The project will examine trends and efforts where national decisions have significance for the formation of global Internet policy. In addition to sponsoring research and collaborations with key global research and academic organizations, the Internet Policy Observatory will undertake its own research initiatives to establish data on the social and political context of online communications within targeted countries. Some topics the Internet Policy Observatory will engage in include:
•       The evolution of mechanisms and processes that affect domestic Internet policy;
•       The legal, political, economic, and social factors (domestic and international) that influence the implementation or non-implementation of such policies;
•       The relationship between national efforts and international policy formations;
•       The role of civil society in domestic Internet policy processes and control; and
•       The role of public opinion as a mode of determining a “demand side” for useful Internet policy developments.

Applicants should hold postgraduate qualifications at PhD level or equivalent in a field related to internet policy studies, law or policy, communication,  media/cultural studies.  Applicants should possess a track record of publishing in high quality international journals or other appropriate refereed publications, as well as teaching experience.  Experience in research proposal development and implementation of research projects involving both quantitative and qualitative methodologies is an required. This one-year position comes with a stipend of $40,000 to $50,000 (depending on years of prior experience), health insurance, $2,000 in travel and research support, office space with computer and telephone, and full access to the Penn library system. Annenberg welcomes domestic and international applicants.  If applicant has not completed graduate studies in English, the University of Pennsylvania’s TOEFL standards apply.  The fellowship is a one year term.
