Reflection on Making a Video for CID’s Competition

CID Video Competition

“The Making of…”: A Path between Cultures by Bruno Alicata and Giorgia Culotta.

In the following contribution we wish to present ‘The Making of’ the video of Class 5B which won the Second Prize in the 2018 CID international video competition “What Does Intercultural Dialogue Look Like?” We believe it is important to share such experience because making the video became the occasion for a meta-reflection on what ‘intercultural dialogue’ means to us and, at the same time, the occasion to actually practice several forms of intercultural dialogue. Therefore, besides the final result – which came unexpectedly, and made us greatly rejoice! – we wish to show how a collective and co-constructed endeavor can be the occasion to realize intercultural practices in their widest and most profound sense. – Paola Giorgis, Teacher, the School of Arts “Aldo Passoni,” Turin, Italy

[If you want to participate this year, check out 2019 CID Video Competition details]

Bruno Alicata: “The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed.” (Carl Gustav Jung, 2005 [1933], p. 49) Taking my cue from Jung, I must say that this experience was transformative, I believe for each person who took part in our work. As one of the most important reasons why we chose to take part in this competition was to experience an inner transformation by meeting other personalities from other cultures, I can say that, at the end of all this, this objective was fulfilled.

CFP Development in Intercultural Competence Research

“PublicationCall for Submissions: Development in Intercultural Competence Research, for special section of China Media Research. Deadline: May 26, 2019.

This special section of China Media Research invites scholars from a broad range of disciplines to submit manuscripts on the theme of “Development in Intercultural Competence Research.” Intercultural competence is one of the key concepts of intercultural communication. It has drawn much scholarly attention since the 1980s. In the past decades, scholars from foreign language education, social psychology, human communication, and business management have examined and assessed intercultural competence from diverse perspectives, which resulted in the abundant literature as well as the deepened understanding on the concept. Nevertheless, despite the progress in intercultural competence research, many problems still need to be addressed. For instances, most of the theories focus more on how effectiveness is achieved but much less on how appropriateness is realized; Western theories dominate intercultural competence research; how Western and non-Western perspectives can be integrated is rarely explored; most of the measuring instruments are self-report scales that measure behavior and knowledge rather than measure emotion and awareness; and reliable and valid scales are limited. This special section aims to further explore these issues.

CMR invites scholars to submit their original manuscripts that consider but are not restricted to the following topics: re/conceptualizing intercultural competence; critiques on Western or non-Western intercultural competence theories; possible ways to integrate Western and non-Western perspectives on intercultural competence; the development of intercultural competence measuring instruments; empirical researches on intercultural competence in the global contexts.

Both qualitative and quantitative approaches examining the development of intercultural competence are welcome. Submissions must not have been previously published nor be under consideration by another publication. An extended abstract (up to 1,000 words) or a complete paper at the first stage of the reviewing process will be accepted. All the submissions must be received by May 26, 2019. If the extended abstract is accepted, the complete manuscript must be received by August 18, 2019. Manuscripts should be prepared in accordance with the APA publication manual (6th edition) and should not exceed 8,000 words including tables and references. All manuscripts will be peer reviewed, and the authors will be notified of the final acceptance/rejection decision. CMR is a quarterly journal, which publishes both print and online versions. Send your questions and submissions to the CMR special section guest editor Dr. Xiaodong Dai.

CFP Migration & Integration in Contemporary Societies (Sweden)

ConferencesOrganizing Migration and Integration in Contemporary Societies [OMICS] Conference, 6-9 November, 2019, University of Gothenburg, Gothenburg, Sweden. Deadline for abstracts: 15 May 2019; Deadline for full papers: 9 October 2019.

Growth in international migration has prompted a diversity of efforts to manage global migratory flows as well as improve and streamline the economic, social and political integration of migrants into the host countries. Migration and integration today involve a myriad of actors such as international and regional bodies, state agencies and municipalities, companies, interest groups, community-embedded, civil society organizations as well as individuals, including migrants, who design, implement reproduce, participate in, and replicate individual or collaborative initiatives aimed at facilitating migration and integration. Some efforts are planned and involve years of preparation and the engagement of large coalition of actors; others are ephemeral and ad hoc, emerging from one day to the next only to disappear again quickly. Some efforts aim at facilitating transnational migration others at improving migrants’ health, at supporting migrants’ inclusion into the host countries’ education system or the labour market, at preventing radicalization, or securing migrants’ civic, social and legal inclusion in the new country. From a coordination and organizing perspective, this myriad of actors and activities separated in time and space poses not only far-reaching challenges, but also great opportunities.

These challenges and opportunities demand novel and critical research and interdisciplinary approaches from a range of disciplines, such as anthropology, educational sciences, health sciences, information technology, international studies, law and human rights, management and organization studies, migration studies, political science, social work and sociology. This to rethink how migration shapes and produces inclusion and exclusion around the world – from welfare states in the Global North to the states of the Global South.

The Center for Intercultural Dialogue publishes a series of short briefs describing Key Concepts in Intercultural Dialogue. Different people, working in different countries and disciplines, use different vocabulary to describe their interests, yet these terms overlap. Our goal is to provide some of the assumptions and history attached to each concept for those unfamiliar with it. As there are other concepts you would like to see included, send an email to the series editor, Wendy Leeds-Hurwitz. If there are concepts you would like to prepare, provide a brief explanation of why you think the concept is central to the study of intercultural dialogue, and why you are the obvious person to write up that concept.
