Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom: Secretary General (Switzerland)

The Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) is a membership-based organisation with Sections and Groups in over 40 countries and partners around the world, with an International Secretariat (IS) based in Geneva and a New York office. Since establishment in 1915, they have brought together women from around the world who are united in working for peace by non-violent means and promoting political, economic and social justice for all.

They are seeking to hire a full-time Secretary General (SG) who is aligned with and exemplifies WILPF’s feminist values. The incoming SG will help lead a transformative process of co-creating a more inclusive WILPF movement and an evolving IS structure – the IS currently comprises 47 staff members and long term consultants with a budget of approximately CHF9 million per annum – while holding the IS accountable for the set of its mandated functions as per WILPF’s Constitution, and leading the collective implementation of the International Programme 2022-2025 (IP)

The ideal candidate will be a feminist leader for peace and social change in line with WILPF’s values, an activist with experience in membership-based movements and leading organisations through change, with a feminist understanding of the human rights, conflict/peacebuilding, and/or disarmament sector, and with social capital and legitimacy in this sector.  They will be open-minded, brave and curious, a motivator and a collaborator, able to lead diverse groups of people in collectively achieving goals, and an excellent communicator for varied audiences.

Under the overall authority of the Assistant Director-General for Social and Human Sciences Sector (ADG/SHS), strategic guidance from the Director for Research, Ethics and Inclusion and direct supervision of the Chief of Inclusion, Rights, and Intercultural Dialogue Section, the Programme Specialist is responsible for analyzing, implementing and monitoring projects and activities within the inclusion, rights and intercultural dialogue Section, leading work to promote dialogue for social cohesion, resilience, accountability, civic empowerment and conflict transformation; and contributing to work to enhance social and gender inclusion through the empowerment of vulnerable and marginalised communities and the fight against racism and discrimination.

The incumbent, working within the frameworks of UNESCO’s Medium Term Strategy (C/4), the approved Programme and Budget (C/5) and global development plans such as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, will guide the technical development of sectional, cross-sectional and divisional projects and activities, financed by core and voluntary funding; provide recommendations on project feasibility and possible collaborations; engage with substantive developments in relevant technical fields; and manage relationships with key internal and external stakeholders to provide expert technical advice.

The Department of Languages, Cultures & Film wishes to appoint to a fixed-term Lectureship (Teaching and Scholarship) in World Cinema to provide cover for a colleague on a Leverhulme Fellowship. The successful candidate will be a key member of the Film Studies team, working with colleagues to maintain and enhance a thriving undergraduate programme, which has experienced significant growth and over recent years, and to help develop and deliver a new MA in Film Studies.

Applicants should have a PhD in Film Studies or a relevant related discipline and provide clear evidence of teaching experience in World Cinema (understood broadly, i.e. encompassing streaming and other platforms). Candidates should also be able to demonstrate sensitivity to diverse cultural contexts; a focus on transnational and intercultural approaches to Film Studies is what makes our degree programme in Liverpool unique and attractive, and the department actively encourages comparative, global, transnational, and transcultural approaches. Active engagement with scholarship in the field of Film Studies and/or World Cinema is expected, as is the demonstration of leadership in high-quality teaching innovations. The post is available from 1 September 2024 until 31 August 2025 working on a 0.9fte basis.

The Department of Education, Communication & Society is seeking to recruit a social science scholar with teaching and research interests in anthropology, sociology, social policy or a closely allied field to teach on our BA Social Sciences and other programmes as appropriate and to conduct high quality research. They will have interests and a track record that enable them to convene Political Activism and Social Change and Rethinking Work, which are optional modules on the BA Social Sciences. They will be a member of the friendly and vibrant Centre for Public Policy Research (CPPR) within the School of Education, Communication and Society, which is a School in the Faculty of Social Science and Public Policy. Ideally, they will have interests that strengthen the existing programmes of work in CPPR. The Department of Applied Linguistics is a research-intensive environment with two MA programmes: the MA in TESOL and MA in Applied Linguistics (with a Specialisation in Multilingualism), which also contributes a Linguistics pathway on four UG programmes. The appointee will be expected to contribute to the department’s research profile and should have an excellent track record of publication in their research area, appropriate to their stage of career. An ability and willingness to contribute to or lead collaborative and interdisciplinary research projects would be a strong advantage.

In terms of teaching, the successful candidate must be able to contribute widely to the Undergraduate or Postgraduate curricula, including at least three from the following (either PG or UG):

  • UG: Introduction to Linguistics: Grammar, Introduction to Linguistics: Discourse, English as a Global Language, History of English, Sounds of English, Language and Society, Semantics and Pragmatics, Syntax, Psycholinguistics, and Language and Gender.
  • PG: Introduction to Multilingualism, Multilingualism in Society, Linguistics for Language Teachers, Methods in English Language Teaching, Principles of Course and Materials Design, Second Language Acquisition, Language Testing and Assessment, Speaking and Listening, and Research Methods. MA Dissertation (TESOL or MA Applied Linguistics).

In addition, the ability to contribute a new module in either Forensic Linguistics or Computational Linguistics would be an advantage. Staff typically teach 1-1.5module(s) per semester, depending on student numbers. The typical contact hours are around 6 hours per week. A contribution to academic administration will also be expected.
