The African Leadership Centre (ALC), King’s College London, seeks to appoint a Lecturer in Leadership, Development, Peace and Security. The applicant will be an outstanding early career scholar with interdisciplinary expertise on the noted themes with empirical reflection on global South contexts. The post holder will contribute to research-led teaching, use of innovative approaches to enhance teaching, learning and student experience, supervision and marking to online and in-person student cohorts. The post holder will provide academic and pastoral support to postgraduate students at the ALC. The post holder will have opportunities to develop high-quality education-focused research. The Lecturer will themselves receive mentoring and support to further develop their skills and experience in education, academic administration and scholarship. The African Leadership Centre is a dynamic Unit based within the King’s School of Global affairs that delivers postgraduate teaching, doctoral training and  academic as well as policy-oriented research. The ALC focuses on the intellectual study of leadership within the fields of development, peacebuilding and security with attention to global South contexts..

12′ Refugee Puppet Sparks ICD

Throughout the trek, the 12-foot-tall puppet — which required up to four people to control — would make over 140 stops in eight countries, at venues ranging from refugee camps to the Royal Opera House in London. Those would include theatrical spectacles, including a final event in Manchester, England, as well as spontaneous encounters, with Amal (whose name means hope in Arabic) simply walking through a city or village and seeing what happens.

Little Amal represents a 9-year-old Syrian girl separated from her family, searching for her mother from Turkey to England. The goal is for her plight, representing that of refugee children more generally, to spark conversations. CFP The Rhetoric of Otherness (Reminder)

This is a gentle reminder of the CFP on The Rhetoric of Otherness for the journal Rhetoric & Communications. This special issue invites authors to explore old and new forms of Otherness and Othering in various texts such as literary, journalistic, political speeches, new media, social media, visual texts, and films, by focusing on the role of linguistic, rhetoric, and discourse strategies (e.g. argumentation, figure of speech, discourse elements, visual composition, etc.) in the representation, construction or deconstruction of us/them, sameness/difference in order to disclose, denounce, criticise, or unpack emotions, thoughts, behaviours that lead to discrimination, prejudice, stereotypes, stigma, and exclusion among others. We welcome contributions that are either original research (qualitative/quantitative methods), systematic review, or theoretical articles.

The deadline has been extended to Dec. 31st., 2021.

Intercultural Innovation Award Finalists 2021

Awards2021 winners of the Intercultural Innovation Award, a program developed by the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) and BMW Group, have now been announced.

Ten global grassroots initiatives have been named finalists of the prestigious Intercultural Innovation Award during an Awards Ceremony held in Dubai on November 19, 2021. This year, the selection process was highly competitive, with over 1,100 applications received from 120 countries. The winners are:

  • Dialogue on the Human Fraternity Document – Mediterranean Youth Foundation (Egypt)

Besides the financial support of 200,000 USD (to be divided equally across the 10 selected projects), award winners will benefit from professional project guidance from the BMW Group, UNAOC, and the business consulting firm Accenture. Recipients will also receive managerial and strategic project support and become part of the “Intercultural Leaders” network, which connects professionals and managers across the globe.

The organizers of the conference wish to invite scholars in humanities, social sciences, and fine and performing arts, including communication, literature, linguistics, translation and interpretation, media, journalism, cultural studies, theatre, dance, graphic design, art, music and others to a discussion on the broad topic of Freedom of Expression: Communication, Identity and Culture. Potential submissions can include traditional paper abstracts, videos of performances, photographs, images of art, etc. Contributions will be paneled for discussions related to the conference theme.

Potential topics most likely of interest to CID followers include: Minority culture, the Other and identity; Globalization and freedom of expression; Language, translation and their impacts on expression; Translation and interpreting as multifaceted intercultural mediation.

The North-South Centre of the Council of Europe would like to invite you to join the upcoming Lisbon Forum that will take place on 9-10 December, in a hybrid format on the topic: Intercultural dialogue in the infodemic era. During two days, decision makers, experts, activists, organisations and institutions from all regions of the world will gather in Lisbon and online to discuss on the urgent necessity to support intercultural dialogue to counter misinformation, disinformation and hate speech.

Global Challenges Teaching Awards 2022 (USA-UK)

Call for applications: Global Challenges Teaching Awards, USA-UK Fulbright Commission. Deadline: 13 December 2021.

The Global Challenges Teaching Award supports US and UK higher education institution teaching faculty to co-deliver a virtual exchange course for undergraduate students. The calamity of COVID-19 has disrupted every dimension of our lives across the globe. Racial injustice persists in society. Climate change continues to melt glaciers and wreak extreme weather and havoc around the globe. Tackling these global challenges requires global collaboration. International education exchange is one tried and tested way of bringing minds together, but traditional, in-person exchange, is under severe economic and environmental pressure and, crucially, is not a viable option for everyone.

The Global Challenges Teaching Awards support pairs of teaching faculty – one at a US higher education institution (HEI), one at a UK HEI – to co-deliver a virtual exchange programme for undergraduates between their two universities. There are three awards available focusing on three specific global challenges:

  • Racial Justice
  • Pandemics
  • Climate Change

The award is open to faculty across the UK and US and selected grantees will take part in a year-long programme to support the development and delivery of a virtual exchange course.
