Through film, television, books and music, immigrants and their children have told personal, collective, and universal stories. Not only do their narratives give voice to non-dominant groups, but mediated narratives of the immigrant experience also offer insight into both the ideal and reality of living in the United States. In addition, these narratives highlight the acculturative experiences shared among minorities regardless of racial background.

The purpose of this anthology is to gather essays which 1) engage questions of representation of immigrants and their children, 2) offer analysis of first and second generation American produced texts and their audiences, and 3) share reflective essays from minoritized first-generation Americans about their assimilation experience, and if possible their connection to any first-gen narratives. While there are different definitions for first-generation, for this anthology, first-generation is being defined as children of parents who immigrated to America as adults or who immigrated to America themsleves as children.

Submissions may include textual or audience analysis, autoethnographies, personal essays, survey or experimental methods. Creative and non-academic submissions are also welcome. Texts of interest include film (mainstream and independent), television, original series, books, online magazines, and music which speak to the first-generation experience. Essays written by those who are first or second generation  are encouraged.

Kristen Cole Researcher Profile

Kristen ColeKristen Cole (PhD, University of New Mexico) is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication at Denison University. Dr. Cole’s research and teaching span Rhetoric, Media and Cultural Studies. Her interests include constructions of gender and sexuality, race and ethnicity, citizenship and immigration, conflict and community, and science and technology. She investigates formations of identity and enactments of agency within marginalized communities and how these are represented in publicly mediated spaces. She utilizes rhetorical, critical/cultural, feminist, and queer approaches to media texts in order to understand the ways power is exerted and negotiated and the ways change is enacted. Her research and teaching focus on how communication at interpersonal, social, and cultural levels restricts and promotes a multiplicity of lived experiences. Her most recent publications can be found in the Sage Handbook of Conflict Communication and the interdisciplinary journal of Porn Studies.

Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates should possess an earned PhD in Communication and a research program that intersects with our current strengths in media, interpersonal, health, or intercultural communication. Previous administrative experience at the level of chair or program director is desired. Opportunities for interdisciplinary research collaboration may exist between this position and the CLA Departments of Psychology or Sociology, McCormack Graduate School of Public Policy, and/or College of Nursing and Health Sciences, depending on areas of research expertise and interest. Department chairs are expected to teach one course per semester.

We are looking for an outstanding young scholar to develop a program of teaching and research on mobile communication. Candidates should possess a Ph.D. in communication or a related field and have a solid grounding in social scientific theory and research. Preferred areas of interest related to mobile communication include one or more of the following: communication and social change, social networks, consumer behaviour, economics and policy. Experience with traditional and online surveys is a plus. Tenure-track Assistant Professor in Multimedia Journalism

We are looking for an innovative scholar to study and teach convergent and cross-platform journalism. Candidates should possess a Ph.D., with a record of high quality research and some professional experience with cross-platform news media production. A solid grounding in journalism practice will be an asset. Duties will include teaching courses in multimedia and online journalism and engaging in ongoing professional development through research, publication and curriculum development. He or she will teach in the Schools signature multimedia news production facility, Newsplex Asia, and contribute to its advancement through curriculum development and other innovative programs. Newsplex Asia is a joint venture of the WKWSCI and the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), and is designed to help students and practitioners to develop the skills needed to be news professional in a converged media environment.

Tenure-track Assistant Professor in Visual Communication/Digital Media

We are looking for an Assistant Professor with strong scholarly potential and experience in visual communication and digital media studies, and specialization in one or more of the following general areas: film studies, television studies, emerging media, visual narratives, comparative media systems and telecommunication policy. Study Abroad Dublin

The Media and Communication Department at Muhlenberg College is entering its second year of an exciting, media-focused study abroad program in Dublin, Ireland. A group of 15 to 20 Muhlenberg students majoring in Media or Film Studies travels with a faculty member, living on campus at Dublin City University (DCU). The students take two courses in the DCU School of Communications, a course with the Muhlenberg faculty member, and a guaranteed for-credit, media-related internship. Halfway through the semester, the students take a week-long “study trip” to London, complete with scheduled visits to the BBC, Guardian, Bloomberg, and Historic Royal Palaces. The program was designed for Muhlenberg students, but undergraduates with a background in media and communication are encouraged to email pooley@muhlenberg.edu to inquire about joining next spring’s Dublin semester.

UNESCO and UNAOC have created the UNESCO UNITWIN UNAOC Network of Universities on Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue (“UAC-MILID”).

UAC-MILID specific objectives include:
*Act as a Observatory for critically analyzing: the role of Media and Information Literacy (“MIL”) as a catalyst for civic participation, democracy and development; for the promotion of free, independent and pluralistic media; as well as MIL’s contribution to the prevention and resolution of conflicts and intercultural tensions and polarizations.
*Enhance intercultural and cooperative research on MIL and the exchanges between universities and mass media, encouraging MIL’s initiatives towards respecting human rights and dignity and cultural diversity.
*Develop within the participant universities educational and media production practices that contribute to dissolving prejudice and intercultural barriers and favour global dialogue and cooperation among citizens as well as social and political institutions around the world. In addition to the international dimension, these practices will be reflected at the local level in the 8 cities or neighbourhoods in which the partner universities are located.
*Promote global actions relating to MIL (including adaptation of the UNESCO MIL Curriculum for Teacher Education and other relevant tools, publications, congresses, seminars, teaching resources, and faculty and students’ exchanges) that could contribute towards stimulating dialogue and understanding among people of and within different cultures and societies.
*Create a virtual centre to research on, and study and develop MIL initiatives aimed at the creation of projects and publications linking universities and research centres.
*Promote and support other global media initiatives that could reinforce civic participation through open, free and independent media and information systems that favour intercultural dialogue and cooperation.
*Encourage and support citizen participation as well as educational and cultural institutions whose initiatives promote media and information literacy, cooperation and intercultural dialogue.

Media and Citizenship call for papers

Call for Papers: Media and Citizenship Special Issue

Scholars have long noted the need for a well-informed electorate to maintain healthy democracies. Media performances, in many instances, have implications for the quality of democracies and their societies. An established body of scholarship in media studies and elsewhere has addressed such issues as media contribution to democratic governance. Much less empirical research examines connections among media, media systems and citizenship, including the rights, responsibilities and privileges associated with belonging to particular nations or communities, as well as associated values, identities and processes working to reinforce or transform them.

This special issue of the Taiwan Journal of Democracy is an invitation to bridge that gap. As many countries move toward more democratic forms of governance, the articulation of various dimensions of citizenship has import for the quality of democracies, but has not been fully explored in studies of democracy and democratization, as Guillermo O’Donnell has noted (See his lead article in Taiwan Journal of Democracy, Vol.3, No.2, December 2007). We use citizenship in a broad sense here, including formal rights and accompanying responsibilities in terms of a nation-state, but also dimensions reaching into often-overlooked dimensions of citizenship-including civil, social, cultural or environmental, among others-as well as what some have termed the emergence of a global civil society, or post-national citizenship following the spread of globalization.

This call for papers is intended to explore the interface of citizenship with media, building on other work on media and political engagement. Papers here may explore conceptual and analytical bridges to such key notions as agency, identity, deliberation, practice, civic interests and expression, or civic culture, among others. Please note this call is not region specific.

Key questions remain regarding interactions of dimensions and conceptualizations of citizenship with society, including regarding the formation, erosion or transformation of citizenship and citizens. How do media work to explore the limits of citizenship, of belonging or exclusion, of public and private spheres, of diversity among citizens, or in the transformation from non-citizen to citizen, and vice-versa? As Manuel Castells and Silvio Waisbord have asked, as demarcations between states, civil society and their citizens shift, what are the implications for our understandings of citizenship and the role of communication? Peter Dahlgren discussed media’s key roles in terms of shaping components of civic agency and culture; what are the observed cases of those formulations? How do citizens’ encounters with mediated content shape identity formation, public opinion, civic awareness, among others? As citizens struggle to resolve conflicts in democratic, non-democratic or democratizing societies, how does media performance connect? In rapidly transforming technological contexts, what are the implications for articulation or realization of citizenship at various scales?

Guidelines & Timeline
Full-paper proposals of empirical research (maximum 10,000 words, including references, footnotes, tables and figures) will be considered for the special issue. Papers should follow the Journal’s style and writing guidelines and editorial policies, which can be found on its website here (http://www.tfd.org.tw/english/tjd.php). Because of deadline considerations, only English-language manuscripts will be considered. The extended deadline for paper submission is April 18,, 2011. Authors will be notified by July 15, 2011, regarding the outcome of peer reviews. Final revised manuscripts for publication will be due Sept. 15, 2011. The tentative publication date for the issue will be December 2011.

Documents should be sent via email to co-editor Juliet Pinto. A title page including a 150-word abstract, relevant contact information and a brief biological sketch should be sent as a separate file. Manuscripts should include only the working title as a header on each page, and all identifying information should be removed.

Media and Intercultural Relations

“On the occasion of the international ceremony of the Anna Lindh Journalist Award 2010 – taking place in the Principality of Monaco on Thursday 14 October 2010 – a roundtable event is being organized on the theme of ‘Media and Intercultural Relations in the Euro-Mediterranean region’.
The debate, which will involve renowned media experts and Mediterranean personalities, will open with a presentation of the 2010 ‘Anna Lindh Report on Euro-Mediterranean Intercultural Trends’ which has a thematic focus on the impact of media on public perceptions across the two shores of the Mediterranean.
According to the report findings, nearly four-fifths of people questioned in eight European countries and two-thirds of those questioned in five countries in the southern and eastern Mediterranean (SEM) were unable to recall coming across anything in the media recently that had enhanced their view of people in the ‘other’ group.
At the same time, the report places emphasis on the promotion of new media formats and entertainment media, whether film, real-life narratives or talent contests, as tools to reach a broad audience and demonstrate the diversity and richness of Euro-Mediterranean societies by providing examples of intercultural co-existence.
The Anna Lindh Foundation for the Dialogue between Cultures is a €7 million EU-funded project which aims at bringing people and organisations of the region closer and promoting dialogue, by offering them opportunities to work together on projects in the fields of culture, education, science, human rights, sustainable development, the empowerment of women and the arts.”
