CFP Intercultural Mediation, Citizenship & Social Development

“PublicationCall for papers: Intercultural Mediation, Citizenship & Social Development, Special issue of Lusophone Journal of Cultural Studies. Editors: Ana Maria Costa e Silva, Margarida Morgado, & Monika Hrebacková. Deadline: October 30, 2021.

We live in times of social crisis and emergency contexts due to the Covid-19 pandemic situation that has certainly affected people’s relationships in multicultural spaces and shaken their notion of citizenship, while we also witnessed serious threats to social living as we know it. There were probably references that lost their meaning and others that progressively invaded our realities and our imaginations. The state of emergency in which we live is complex at various levels, including prophylactic isolation, physical distancing from people, psychological and social violence, and increased vulnerabilities and inequalities in the most marginalized populations. This issue invites contributions on the various facets of intercultural mediation and the role of mediators in times of change such as these. It invites authors to consider the plural and multifaceted objectives of intercultural mediation in contexts of social transformation. The focus of the issue will be on trialled practices of intercultural mediation, the construction of multicultural citizenship, and the positive development of society, which are transformative and healing in a humanist logic of caring for the other and in terms of the possibility of reinterpreting society in contexts of crisis.

Mobilizing at the Margins: Citizenship, Identity, and Democracy
LAGO Graduate Student Conference
February 5-7th, 2015
New Orleans, LA
Deadline for Submissions: October 24th, 2014
Length of Submissions: 300 words or less

Tulane University’s Latin American Graduate Organization (LAGO) invites your abstract submissions for the 2015 Graduate Conference where you can meet graduate scholars, faculty, and community leaders interested in Latin America, explore the city, and experience the unique Mardi Gras season in New Orleans!

This year’s conference encourages participants to engage with historical and emerging confrontations and reconfigurations of national identification, expressions of individual or communal identity, performances of citizenship, and reimaginings of democracy within the context of Latin America. Latin America and the Caribbean encompass vast cultural, linguistic, and geographic diversity, making the region a subject of prolific scholarly study across disciplines. Within this complexity, conceptualizations of citizenship, identity, and democracy are constantly being negotiated, contested, and reframed in a multitude of contexts. These various encounters highlight the ways in which individuals interact with their communities, how communities define themselves within and/or beyond the framework of national borders, and how power and politics play out in an increasingly interconnected and decentralized global community.

With this broad theme in mind, LAGO invites graduate scholars across disciplines to submit abstracts exploring mobilizations of citizenship, identity and democracy from the physical, societal and theoretical margins of Latin America and the Caribbean region for LAGO’s 2015 graduate student conference. LAGO encourages participants to interpret this theme as they see fit. We invite submissions in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Haitian Creole for consideration.

Submit your abstract by Friday, October 24th, 2014. Please circulate widely.

“Mobilizando às margens: cidadania, identidade, e democracia”
Congresso Estudantil de Pós-graduação de LAGO
De 5 a 7 de fevereiro de 2015
New Orleans, LA

New Orleans, LA

Date limite: 24 Octobre, 2014. Prière de diffuser largement.

CFP Religious others, schooling, civic identities

Religious ‘Others,’ Schooling, and the Negotiation of Civic Identities

Interdisciplinary Symposium
25.06. – 28.06.2014
Hannover, Germany

The symposium will explore the relationship between hegemonic discourses of citizenship, religio-cultural belonging, and the negotiation of civic identities among religio-cultural minority youths in educational settings. The question of how non-dominant youths negotiate their civic identities as citizens in light of their coexisting religio-cultural identities has been at the center of a heated debate in many modern societies. The ongoing public concern about the resurgence of the religious  – and here especially the religious ‘other’ – in the public sphere has led to the emergence of a public debate over how to handle the ‘religious’ in the institutions, civic society, and public sphere of ‘postsecular’ society. The symposium will explore how societal master narratives about secularity, religion/ the religious ‘other,’ and citizenship are instantiated in the everyday practices of schools and classrooms, and how students from religious minority groups in turn come to navigate their identities as citizens.

These questions will be theorized and explored empirically in presentations and discussion workshops focused on 1) the macro-level of hegemonic formations of citizenship and belonging that characterizes classrooms across a variety of settings, with particular attention to the role of the religious ‘other’ in these formations, 2) the micro-level of everyday practices through which these formations are enacted in curricula and in the classroom, 3) the personal experience of moments of inclusion, exclusion, and silencing, and 4) the policy level of ongoing transformations and mutual openings that allow for the construction of a shared civic identity among youths as future citizens.

Researchers from a range of disciplines, including, but not limited to, education, anthropology, religious studies, philosophy, linguistics, sociology, and political science, are invited to participate.

Application deadline with short statement of interest: July 10, 2013

Call for Participation

Travel cost and lodging will be covered for all accepted participants. At this point we are solicitating informal statements of interest of academic researchers who would be interested in contributing to the symposium by giving paper presentations or leading workshops on particular topics. Media and Citizenship call for papers

Please note: The deadline for the special issue on media and democracy for the Taiwan Journal of Democracy has been extended until Monday, April 18. The complete call follows below and is attached.

Taiwan Journal of Democracy
Call for Papers: Media and Citizenship Special Issue

Scholars have long noted the need for a well-informed electorate to maintain healthy democracies. Media performances, in many instances, have implications for the quality of democracies and their societies. An established body of scholarship in media studies and elsewhere has addressed such issues as media contribution to democratic governance. Much less empirical research examines connections among media, media systems and citizenship, including the rights, responsibilities and privileges associated with belonging to particular nations or communities, as well as associated values, identities and processes working to reinforce or transform them.

This special issue of the Taiwan Journal of Democracy is an invitation to bridge that gap. As many countries move toward more democratic forms of governance, the articulation of various dimensions of citizenship has import for the quality of democracies, but has not been fully explored in studies of democracy and democratization, as Guillermo O’Donnell has noted (See his lead article in Taiwan Journal of Democracy, Vol.3, No.2, December 2007). We use citizenship in a broad sense here, including formal rights and accompanying responsibilities in terms of a nation-state, but also dimensions reaching into often-overlooked dimensions of citizenship-including civil, social, cultural or environmental, among others-as well as what some have termed the emergence of a global civil society, or post-national citizenship following the spread of globalization.

This call for papers is intended to explore the interface of citizenship with media, building on other work on media and political engagement. Papers here may explore conceptual and analytical bridges to such key notions as agency, identity, deliberation, practice, civic interests and expression, or civic culture, among others. Please note this call is not region specific.

Key questions remain regarding interactions of dimensions and conceptualizations of citizenship with society, including regarding the formation, erosion or transformation of citizenship and citizens. How do media work to explore the limits of citizenship, of belonging or exclusion, of public and private spheres, of diversity among citizens, or in the transformation from non-citizen to citizen, and vice-versa? As Manuel Castells and Silvio Waisbord have asked, as demarcations between states, civil society and their citizens shift, what are the implications for our understandings of citizenship and the role of communication? Peter Dahlgren discussed media’s key roles in terms of shaping components of civic agency and culture; what are the observed cases of those formulations? How do citizens’ encounters with mediated content shape identity formation, public opinion, civic awareness, among others? As citizens struggle to resolve conflicts in democratic, non-democratic or democratizing societies, how does media performance connect? In rapidly transforming technological contexts, what are the implications for articulation or realization of citizenship at various scales?

Guidelines & Timeline
Full-paper proposals of empirical research (maximum 10,000 words, including references, footnotes, tables and figures) will be considered for the special issue. Papers should follow the Journal’s style and writing guidelines and editorial policies, which can be found on its website here (http://www.tfd.org.tw/english/tjd.php). Because of deadline considerations, only English-language manuscripts will be considered. The extended deadline for paper submission is April 18,, 2011. Authors will be notified by July 15, 2011, regarding the outcome of peer reviews. Final revised manuscripts for publication will be due Sept. 15, 2011. The tentative publication date for the issue will be December 2011.

Documents should be sent via email to co-editor Juliet Pinto. A title page including a 150-word abstract, relevant contact information and a brief biological sketch should be sent as a separate file. Manuscripts should include only the working title as a header on each page, and all identifying information should be removed.
