The Department of Communication, Languages and Cultures at Coastal Carolina University invites applications for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor for Intercultural/International Communication.

A Ph.D. in Communication, Anthropology, or Language with teaching experience and coursework in intercultural/international is required. Preference will be given to applicants who are qualified to teach (have 18 credit hours) in one of the Department’s areas of language instruction:  German, French or Italian.  A record that indicates the potential for scholarly productivity and success, and demonstrated interest in institutional service is required. Candidates should ideally possess instructional/research interests and competencies in key areas that could include cross-cultural communication, acculturation, language and culture, semiotics or sociolinguistics. Additional languages and/or cultural proficiencies may be considered. The successful candidate will work with members of the Department to strategically develop courses in intercultural/international communication. Teaching assignments may include evening/weekend courses. The appointment will be effective either January 9, 2015 or August 16, 2015 depending on availability of the candidate.

The Department of Communication, Languages and Cultures is one of Coastal Carolina University’s newest departments serving approximately 600 majors. The Department offers programs and courses in Communication Studies, Health Communication, Interactive Journalism and Media, Public Relations/Integrated Communication, Spanish, French, Italian, and German. The Institute for Public Communication of the Faculty of Communication Sciences invites applications for a full time tenure track position as Assistant Professor of Intercultural Communication.

The Faculty of Communication Sciences is characterized by its emphasis on research and commitment to the highest teaching standards. It offers a young and dynamic context which is highly international and interdisciplinary, studying Communication from many complementary viewpoints, both as disciplines and as fields of application.

Research and teaching carried out within the Institute for Public Communication cover different fields, ranging from public communication and political communication to social marketing, communication law and psychology. So far intercultural communication has been part of the public communication area. It has now been decided to develop this growing field as a specific area of research and teaching within the Institute.

The new chair of intercultural communication will be multi-disciplinary in nature and address both the theoretical and practical dynamics linked to intercultural communication. The core areas of interest are intercultural competence, communication in and with intercultural communities and organisations as well as the challenges of internationality and plurilingualism. The research orientations should be developed in collaboration, and where possible in synergy, with the other research projects underway in the Institute and the Faculty.

We look for candidates in particular from the field of communication sciences, but also from political science, sociology, public administration, anthropology, linguistics and other related fields. A strong commitment to research and solid methodological grounding should be demonstrated by publications in international peer-reviewed journals and other significant publications in the field. A demonstrated ability to address the theoretical and practical issues of intercultural communication will also be valued. Prior professional experience in intercultural contexts, whether in government, administration, NGOs or international organisations, as well as multilingual proficiency are significant asset for this position.

Job description and responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to:
*promote and develop the area of intercultural communication within the Institute for Public Communication;
*teach introductory courses at the Bachelor level and more specialized courses at the Master level, notably as part of the Master in Public Management and Policy (the teaching workload encompasses 9 ECTS for an assistant professor);
*develop and carry-out a research agenda centred on Intercultural Communication, including the obtention of research grants, the publication of academic contributions and the active participation to and contribution in international academic forums;
*assume the academic responsibility of the Executive Master in Intercultural Communication and of the Eurocampus programme;
*co-ordinate research assistants’ activities and supervise PhD candidates;
*participate actively in the work of the Faculty Council and related ad-hoc bodies notably within the Institute for Public Communication. The candidate could, for example, take the direction of the Laboratorio di Studi Mediterranei.

The ideal candidate will have:
*a Ph.D. in Intercultural Communication or in a field related to intercultural communication;
*a documented contribution to research in the field, notably through publications and
conference presentations;
*adequate experience of teaching academic courses on the subject at various levels;
*experience of designing, developing and coordinating educational programmes in the field;
*experience of, or at least the willingness to address the issue of intercultural communication in the Swiss context;
*professional experiences in intercultural contexts;
*active participation in the field’s international research and educational networks, as well as demonstrated leadership and commitment to service to the institution and to the profession.

Residence and language
The professor should reside in Ticino (Italian-speaking part of Switzerland); he or she is expected to be present at the university for no less than four days a week. The University’s graduate programmes are mainly taught in English, while Bachelor classes are taught in Italian. Fluency in Italian, while beneficial, will be required from the second year. Knowledge of other languages, in particular an official language of Switzerland (French or German), is a valuable asset for this position.

WLH and PraxmarerFrom May 20-30, 2014, I had a wonderful invitation to stay in Cimo, Switzerland (a village just outside Lugano), with Peter Praxmarer, the executive director of the European Master in Intercultural Communication (EMICC), which is coordinated through the Università della Svizzera italiana (known in English as the University of Lugano). He also collaborates with, and teaches for, the Master of Advanced Studies in Intercultural Communication (MIC), as well as a number of other European universities.

My goal was to learn more about the EMICC, an intensive and international semester-long study of intercultural communication jointly offered by ten European universities since 2002. This program is a model of international collaboration for graduate education, and an innovative form of what in the USA is called “study abroad,” ensuring that students not only learn about intercultural communication at a theoretical level, but also practice it. We were able to discuss not only some of the logistics of this program, but also shared interests in intercultural communication more generally, as well as inventing future possibilities for collaboration.

While in Lugano, I was able to connect also with Prof. Bertil Cottier, Director of the Institute for Public Communication at USI. Trained as a lawyer, one of his current interests is in data protection and new technologies. As it turns out, the Institute will be conducting a search for a faculty member specializing in intercultural communication shortly – keep an eye on this website for the details.

I also met with Alexandra Stang, a graduate student at the University of Duisburg-Essen (in Germany) currently studying the Intercultural Campus platform, “an international university network created for intercultural learning.” She was in town to interview Peter Praxmarer, and took the opportunity to interview me as well.

Realizing the potential of Cultural Diversity in the society and at the workplace

There is hardly any large society that is presently ethnically homogenous as a result of domestic and international migration. The foreign-populations of many societies are increasing at unprecedented rates. For instance, it has been estimated that by 2050, 85% of Australia‘s population growth will be either from overseas migration or from native born Australians who have at least one foreign-born parent. Europe will need 80 million immigrants by 2030, while the US, Japan and Canada will need 35 million, 17 million, and 11 million immigrants by 2030, respectively (Saunders, 2010).

The aging population of the world, particularly in Western industrialized countries, and unemployment and economic stagnation in many countries, will put pressure on the economies of Western industrialized countries in the form of increased migration, bringing people of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds together in ways that have never been seen before.

These demographic changes have wide range of implications for the governance of nation-building including employment, health, education, housing, economics, politics, culture, intergroup relationships and so forth.  Depending on which angle one takes, the results can be either positive or negative.  Unfortunately, events such as the terror attacks in major European cities including Madrid (2004), in London (2005) and in Oslo/Utøya (Norway, 2011) together with the Danish cartoon drawings of Mohammed are some negative instances of intercultural relations.  European leaders have not fared any better when they incite skepticism by suggesting that multiculturalism has been a failure. These pessimistic statements undermine and diminish the positive aspects of cultural diversity.

It is within this context that this conference is organized, with the theme – Realizing the potential of cultural diversity.

Realizing the potential of cultural diversity in the workplace and society will challenge societies politically, economically, socially, legally and culturally. This challenge will require a parallel effort to achieve equity and full participation of all cultural communities in the larger society. Any discussion around the topics will require a multi-disciplinary approach.  Hence the planned conference will attract scholars from psychology, and many related fields and disciplines. Indeed the ultimate goal of this conference will be to bring to Bergen the leading scholars of the world to share research findings, engage in dialogue on how to tap into the positive sides of cultural diversity, and how employers, institutions, and governments can realize its potential. The conference will include Keynote presentations by leading scholars, symposia, individual papers, posters and round table discussions, including debates. During the past three conferences, the Academy has also devoted a whole day to a workshop – Fellows’ Day – just before the opening of the conference where the Fellows of the Academy engage in a series of discussions regarding the conference theme.

Definite Term Lecturer Positions in Speech Communication at University of Waterloo

The Department of Drama and Speech Communication at the University of Waterloo invites applications for one one-year Definite Term Lecturer in Speech Communication; and for one three-year Definite Term Lecturer position, both with a preferred start date of August 1, 2014. While the latter position is initially a three-year contract position, the successful candidate for the latter position will be entitled to consideration for Continuing Lecturer status at the completion of the contract. Based in a liberal arts faculty with high national and international standards, the Speech Communication program currently serves approximately 140 majors and offers eight different degree programs, including three and four year regular and honours programs, an Arts and Business degree option, and a minor and specialization. The program has concentrations in four areas: Intercultural Communication; Interpersonal/Organizational Communication; Performance Studies; and Public and Digital Communication.

These positions involve teaching eight courses per academic year in the fall, winter, and spring terms (80% of the appointment); and various service and administrative responsibilities (20% of the appointment). It is anticipated that both Definite Term Lecturers will teach communication courses specifically designed for students outside of the Faculty of Arts, as well as courses within the Speech Communication program. Strong candidates will be able to integrate theory and practice in courses in one or more of the following areas: performance studies; public speaking, interpersonal communication, small group communication, organizational communication, intercultural communication, and/or public and digital communication. Demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching, a commitment to experiential learning, experience liaising with university faculty and staff, and familiarity with diverse groups of students will be assets.

ProfilesStephen Croucher (PhD, University of Oklahoma, 2006) is Head of the School of Communication, Journalism and Marketing, Massey University, Wellington, New Zealand.

His research focuses on three main area of interest. First, the cultural adaptation process. Within this area of study he has explored adaptation in 15 nations. Within these studies he has shown through qualitative and quantitative analyses that current models of adaptation do not adequately describe: the fusion of identities that occur during adaptation, and the influence/resistance of the host culture. Second, and closely related to cultural adaptation, is his work into integrated threat theory. In these studies Croucher has shown how many dominant cultural groups in Europe, North America, and Asia fear immigrant and minority communities. These fears (prejudice) lead to less acceptance of adaptation overtures from the minority groups. Third,  he studies the relationships between communicative behaviors/traits and religious identification and religiosity. In this line of work he has found religion (identity and religiosity) to have a significant effect on a variety of traits/behaviors.

Croucher has published 4 books and more than 50 articles in journals such as: Communication Monographs, Journal of International and Intercultural Communication, Management Communication Quarterly, Communication Studies, International Journal of Conflict Management, and Journal of Intercultural Communication Research. 

Croucher is active in various professional associations and has served in a variety of capacities: Vice-Chair of the Intercultural Division of the International Communication Association, editor of the Journal of Intercultural Communication Research and Speaker & Gavel, and World Communication Association Vice President for Europe. He has also served on the editorial board of numerous journals: Communication Studies, Journal of International and Intercultural Communication, International Journal of Conflict Management, Mass Communication and Society, and the Western Journal of Communication.

Previous administrative experience at the level of chair or program director is desired. Opportunities for interdisciplinary research collaboration may exist between this position and the CLA Departments of Psychology or Sociology, McCormack Graduate School of Public Policy, and/or College of Nursing and Health Sciences, depending on areas of research expertise and interest. Department chairs are expected to teach one course per semester.
