Call for papers: 15th International Symposium on Bilingualism: The Different Faces of Bilingualism, San Sebastián, Spain, 9-13 June 2025. Deadline: for Symposium Submission: 16 September 2024.

“The Different Faces of Bilingualism” is a deliberately broad theme for ISB15, aimed at meeting ISB’s mission to create a space for researchers with a diverse range of interests to share their knowledge and gain new perspectives, and to foster meaningful cross-disciplinary collaborations. We hope to bring together researchers working on different faces of bilingualism, including different research areas, methodological approaches, and populations. In line with this aim, we have invited plenary speakers who represent different faces of bilingualism, from sociolinguistics to education, psycholinguistics to translation. This broad theme reflects the multidisciplinary nature of the organizing committee, based in a center of excellence for neuroscientific research into language and bilingualism. To capitalize on this expertise, ISB15 will feature The Bilingual Brain Day, which is intended to share the core insights of the field with researchers of other areas and to discuss the state-of-the-art with researchers in the field. The conference theme also aims to promote inclusivity, inspired by its location in the Spanish Basque Country, one of the few regions in the world that has successfully revived its bilingual heritage across all aspects of society.

Note that this is a call specifically for symposium proposals. Symposia are 120-minute blocks that allow for extended, interactive discussion on a specific topic, focusing on a cluster of independent yet related papers. Each symposium consists of four slots, and should consist either of four presentations, or of three presentations and a discussion. The Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies seeks to strengthen its impact in Bilingualism and Communication as a broadly defined interdisciplinary area of academic studies, in keeping with the latest theoretical frameworks in Corporate Communication that are informed by exemplary business practices in associated industries worldwide. They aspire to develop academic leadership and groom young researchers to excel in Bilingual Corporate Communication (BCC), where “bilingual” is construed as not only distinct varieties of Chinese and English and the associated cultures specific to the local communities, but also other regional languages and cultures (e.g., Japanese and Korean, among others). Apart from infusing BCC theories and practices in multiple degree pathways at the undergraduate level, their flagship, highly popular MA programme (MABCC) will serve as a platform for disseminating BCC knowledge and influence in not only Hong Kong, but also the Greater Bay Area, elsewhere in Greater China, East Asia, the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.

The conference theme of ISB14 is Diversity Now:
The United Nations General Assembly has declared the period between 2022 and 2032 as the International Decade of Indigenous Languages to draw attention to the critical status of many Indigenous languages across the world and encourage action for their preservation, revitalisation, and promotion. As we move into this decade, ISB14 encourages work especially involving lesser studied bilingual communities and interdisciplinary work to tackle bilingualism across the life-span, cultures and societies. In service to the International Decade of Indigenous Languages, IBS14 will focus on collaborative work with Australian Indigenous communities on various Indigenous languages and issues.

Organizers now invite abstracts for two categories of submissions: individual papers and posters. (They previously invited submissions for panels, but that deadline has passed.) Individual papers are formal presentations on original research or pedagogy-focused topics by one or more authors, lasting a maximum of 20 minutes with 5 additional minutes for discussion. Posters on original research or pedagogy will be displayed in sessions that offer the opportunity for individualised, informal discussion with others in the field. Posters are especially effective for presenting work-in-progress, fieldwork, and results of empirical research for which data can be presented visually. Posters will be available throughout an entire day of the conference with presenters in attendance for a 90-minute poster session.

Proposals must include a general abstract describing the symposium as a whole (max. 1 page), as well as abstracts for all individual presentations (each no longer than 1 page, plus up to 1 extra page for figures and references). Sufficient detail should be provided to allow peer reviewers to judge the merit of the proposal. The person submitting the symposium proposal is responsible for securing the permission and co-operation of all participants before the proposal is submitted.

Call for PEaCH Ambassadors for Bilingualism (Online)

Call for PEaCH Ambassadors, PEaCH Project, Ghent University, Ghent, Belgium. Note the short deadline: 15 January 2021.

 

PEaCH stands for “Preserving and promoting Europe’s cultural and linguistic heritage through empowerment of bilingual children and families.” The project supports European families raising bilingual and multilingual children. PEaCH will do this in the form of a handbook for parents, informative videos and an online collection of ready-to-use materials in 24 EU languages. PEaCH will also offer advice to educators interested in this topic as well as create a European network of PEaCH Ambassadors.

The PEaCH Ambassadors will represent the PEaCH Project on a local and national level in their respective language regions. They will support families and educators raising bilingual and multilingual children by promoting the PEaCH Project’s positive message about bilingualism and sharing the PEaCH materials. The PEaCH Ambassadors will be officially recognized and listed on the PEaCH website. PEaCH will offer training for the role through webinars, discussions with project partners and peers, as well as online documents and platforms. This is an unpaid volunteer position. We would want PEaCH Ambassadors to spend a minimum of two hours per month in their role, but of course welcome additional time spent on sharing our message.

The Centre for Research on Bilingualism provides a broad base of theoretical and practical research with the aim of increasing understanding and awareness of bilingualism. The Centre is a cross-linguistic and interdisciplinary unit within the Faculty of Humanities Language Sciences Section at Stockholm University. Research at the Centre forms a significant part of Stockholm University’s leading research area “Bilingualism and Second Language Acquisition”.

Research areas include bilingualism and second language acquisition, multilingualism and diversity, bilingualism in the family, bilingual education, Swedish as a second language for children and adults, young people’s languages and language use in multilingual contexts, second and foreign language teaching, L1 attrition and reactivation in bilinguals, language maintenance and language shift, language ideology, language policy, and multilingualism and education in developing countries. In sum, the Centre’s research covers the sociolinguistic, pragmatic, structural, psycholinguistic, cognitive and neurolinguistic aspects of bilingualism. Duties
The appointees will be required to:
• engage in teaching and related learning activities at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
• assume an important role in curriculum design and development;
• undertake academic research in his/her area of expertise, including but not limited to application for external research grants;
• provide administrative support for academic development and departmental objectives, and play an active role in programme management;
• render professional service to the discipline and/or the community at large; and
• perform any other duties as assigned by the Head of Department or his/her delegates.

Appointees at Professor level will be expected to provide academic leadership in his/her area of expertise.

Qualifications
Applicants should have:
• a PhD degree in a relevant discipline, preferably with the specialism in Intercultural Communication, Bilingualism, Japanese Language Studies, Bilingual Media, Corporate Communication or a related field;
• relevant post-qualification teaching and research experience and a proven record of relevant academic and/or professional achievements;
• a high level of fluency in English; and
• a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, scholarly activities and professional service.

Preference will be given to those who have fluency in Chinese (both written and spoken).

Applicants for appointment at Assistant Professor level should normally have evidence-based research experience (as supported by evidence of research projects and outputs). Experience of postdoctoral research positions will be a plus but not required.

Applicants for appointment at Professor and Associate Professor levels should have substantial years of relevant post-qualification experience and an excellent record of relevant academic and/or professional achievements.  Candidates with less experience will be considered for appointment at a lower level.

Remuneration and Conditions of Service

Call for Chapter Submissions: Black identity, foreign language and culture

We are currently seeking submissions for an accepted book proposal with a national publisher.  All submissions must be completed works.  Abstracts will not be considered.

Exploring black identity through bilinguals of the Diaspora is an edited text that describes how foreign language acquisition and development help to shape how Africans, people of African descent from Latin America and the Caribbean, and African Americans are able to describe and proscribe their identity.  Contributors to this text may have work that falls under one of the following themes:
*        Using foreign language as a tool for self-definition
*        The impact of foreign language on the understanding of self
*        Foreign language acquisition in the African American community
*        The impact of ESL on Blacks of the Diaspora
*        Impact of language on the expatriate experience
*        Bilingual code-switching in the African Diaspora
*        The relationship between language and identity
*        African Americans and bilingualism
*        Bilingualism and identity in the African Diaspora

Completed works must be a minimum of ten (15) pages and a maximum of twenty (20) pages including references and footnotes.

Authors must be able to submit completed chapters by September 15, 2012.
