World Council's 3rd annual Global ForumJoin the 3rd Annual Global Forum of the World Council on Intercultural and Global Competence for a virtual gathering of experts, educators, policymakers, researchers, students, and practitioners from around the world to discuss intercultural competence and global understanding. This year’s theme will be “Exploring the Intersections of Intercultural Competence and Peacebuilding.” This online event will feature engaging keynote speakers, discussions, workshops, and networking opportunities to enhance your skills and knowledge in this critical area.

Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study Fellowships 2025-26 (Sweden)

Barbro Klein Fellowship Programme 2025-26, Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study, Uppsala, Sweden. Deadline: 1 June 2024.

The Barbro Klein Residential Fellowship Programme intends to advance the study of cultural diversity in a global perspective. The fellowship is open to scholars from across disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, with an emphasis on research on cultural and social diversity, cultural heritage and creativity, societal structures and public resistance, and varieties of cultural expressions in local and global perspective.

The programme gives fellows the opportunity to concentrate on their own research interests, free from the teaching and administrative obligations of ordinary university life. Fellows are, however, expected to be active members of the scholarly community of the Collegium and to participate in seminars and other academic events beyond their own fields of specialization.

The fellowship programme encourages, but is not limited to, applications from talented younger scholars in non-Western countries and of underrepresented gender. At the time of application, the candidate must have held a PhD (or equivalent degree) for at least three years. Applicants must have a promising track record of independent achievements beyond the post-doctoral level, including significant publications, and be active in international fora.

Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool U: Linguistics (China)

In 2006 Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) was created by the University of Liverpool and Xi’an Jiaotong University – a top ten university in China. Offering a unique international education experience, XJTLU brings together excellent research practice and expertise from both institutions and gives students the skills and knowledge they need to secure careers in a global marketplace.

The Department of Applied Linguistics is a research-intensive environment with two MA programmes: the MA in TESOL and MA in Applied Linguistics (with a Specialisation in Multilingualism), which also contributes a Linguistics pathway on four UG programmes. The appointee will be expected to contribute to the department’s research profile and should have an excellent track record of publication in their research area, appropriate to their stage of career. An ability and willingness to contribute to or lead collaborative and interdisciplinary research projects would be a strong advantage.

In terms of teaching, the successful candidate must be able to contribute widely to the Undergraduate or Postgraduate curricula, including at least three from the following (either PG or UG):

  • UG: Introduction to Linguistics: Grammar, Introduction to Linguistics: Discourse, English as a Global Language, History of English, Sounds of English, Language and Society, Semantics and Pragmatics, Syntax, Psycholinguistics, and Language and Gender.
  • PG: Introduction to Multilingualism, Multilingualism in Society, Linguistics for Language Teachers, Methods in English Language Teaching, Principles of Course and Materials Design, Second Language Acquisition, Language Testing and Assessment, Speaking and Listening, and Research Methods. MA Dissertation (TESOL or MA Applied Linguistics).

In addition, the ability to contribute a new module in either Forensic Linguistics or Computational Linguistics would be an advantage. Staff typically teach 1-1.5module(s) per semester, depending on student numbers. The typical contact hours are around 6 hours per week. A contribution to academic administration will also be expected.

6th World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue (Azerbaijan)

Events6th World Forum on Intercultural dialogue, Baku, Azerbaijan, 1-3 May 2024.

The 6th World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue, operating under the theme “Dialogue for Peace and Global Security: Cooperation and Interconnectivity,” is being held in Baku, Azerbaijan, co-sponsored by the government of Azerbaijan, UNESCO, UNAOC, and other organizations. The primary objective is to explore the critical intersections between dialogue facilitation, cooperative frameworks, leadership efficacy, and the complex dynamics of interconnectedness, all in the service of advancing global peace and security. A number of the panels are being recorded, and are being made available on UN Web TV.

Stories from the Silk Roads, Kulea Culture Society

During Asian Heritage Month, Kulea Culture Society presents Stories from the Silk Roads, a four-day event of music and film to celebrate the rich heritage of Canadians with roots in the Asian continent. The Silk Roads were a system of caravan routes crossing the Eurasian continent from the Mediterranean Sea to China. They influenced the emergence and development of trade and cultural ties between people and statehoods located along the way and beyond. The routes carried goods, ideas, people across the continent and the sea from China, India, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Iran, Syria, Turkey among others to the Mediterranean and the West. Just like on the Asian continent, different Asian communities live across Canada today. These cultures have developed their distinct identities, arts and histories through interaction and communication with each other in Canada. Stories from the Silk Roads highlight diversity and harmony through arts and culture.

U Oxford: Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowships in the Humanities (UK)

The Humanities Division at the University of Oxford is inviting expressions of interest from candidates wishing to apply for an EU Marie Skłodowska-Curie European Postdoctoral Fellowship to be based in one of the Humanities Faculties. Candidates selected will be provided with support to develop and submit their applications to the EU.

Candidates need to check carefully the detailed guidance for the scheme to ensure you are eligible. Broadly, these are:

*You should have a doctoral degree by the time of the deadline for applications (11 Sept 2024).
*You must have a maximum of eight years’ experience in research, from the date of the award of their PhD degree.
*You must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the UK for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before the call deadline.

Interested candidates should contact a potential supervisor in the relevant Humanities Faculty as soon as possible. Supervisors need to be permanent post-holders in the Faculty in question, and all Expressions of Interest must have the agreement and confirmed support from a supervisor.

Note that the Humanities Division does not support Global Postdoctoral Fellowships.

The internal deadline for expressions of interest is Monday 3 June 2024. If selected, you will be provided with support to develop your application for the scheme deadline on 11 September 2024.

International Jazz Day 2024

Events

International Jazz Day, as established by UNESCO in 2011, occurs every year on April 30.

International Jazz Day, proclaimed by the UNESCO General Conference in 2011, is a global celebration of jazz music held annually on 30 April. It aims to raise awareness on the role of jazz as an educational tool and as a force for creativity, dialogue and intercultural exchange, and highlights how jazz:

  • breaks down barriers and creates opportunities for mutual understanding and tolerance;
  • is a vector of freedom of expression;
  • brings people together in celebration and reduces tensions between individuals, groups, and communities;
  • encourages artistic innovation, improvisation, new forms of expression, and inclusion of traditional music forms into new ones; and
  • stimulates intercultural dialogue and empowers young people from marginalized societies.
