ProfilesQi Wang Schlupp earned her bachelor’s degree in English at Beijing University (1997). Her master’s (Kent State University, 2001) and doctoral degrees (University of Maryland, 2006) were both in communication. She is currently Professor of Communication at Villanova University and Area Coordinator in the Interpersonal Communication specialization.

Her teaching and research interests include intercultural and interpersonal communication, with a focus on conflict management. Recently, she has also conducted and published studies in social media use and its influences on interpersonal communication. She has published research in various key communication journals and books (e.g., The SAGE Handbook of Conflict Communication, Human Communication Research, Journal of Public Relations Research, Communication Quarterly, China Media Research, etc.), and presented conference papers annually at the major scholarly communication organizations such as National Communication Association (NCA) and International Communication Associations (ICA). Her papers have won several Top Paper Awards at NCA. Her doctoral dissertation that theorized conflict avoidance strategies won the 2007 Outstanding Dissertation Award at the International Association for Conflict Management at Budapest, Hungary. She has conducted several funded research projects. Her most recent research that investigates the multinational mining industry in Peru has won the scholarship from the Arthur Page Legacy Center at PSU. She has been named as the 2013-2014 Page Legacy Scholar.

She was the 2013-2014 President of the Association for Chinese Communication Scholars (ACCS) affiliated with NCA. She also served as the Student Board Member at ICA in 2005-2006. She has launched the internship program in Shanghai for the Department of Communication at Villanova University in 2014, and also serves as the vice director of the Center for the Cross-Cultural Education and Communication for the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences. And she served as Editor-in-Chief of the journal Negotiation and Conflict Management Research from 2019 to 2022.

His areas of research are intercultural/global communication, ethnic relations in China and Chinese media. He has published “Ethnic conflicts in China” in Handbook of Ethnic Conflict: International Perspectives,  winner of the Gudykunst Award among others.   A winner of IAIR Early-Career Award, Wang-Fradkin Professorship award, and author of Choice “Outstanding Book” titles such as The Remaking of Chinese Character and Identity in the 21st Century: The Chinese Face Practices, he is editorial board member of International Journal for Intercultural Relations and Asian Journal of Communication and served as a content expert at the 4th World Cyberspace Cooperation Summit and a guest speaker of the Pacific Council on International Policy.

To inherit is to receive as legacy, place adequate value on and make a part of one’s life. But to be a custodian of a great legacy is to guard, preserve, expand and promote it. It is to honor it by building on and expanding it and, in turn, leaving it as an enriched legacy for future generations.

– Maulana Karenga (1996, p. 551)

The International and Intercultural Communication Division (IICD) of the National Communication Association (NCA) was founded as a commission in 1971 and later formed as a division in 1984. I am thus the 42nd incoming chair of this flourishing division. When I think about the history of the IICD and its critical role in advocating diversity and advancing internationalization within the NCA, I feel the heavy weight of the gavel that Dr. S. Lily Mendoza at Oakland University passed to me in Washington, D.C. With an eye on the 100th Anniversary of the NCA next year, I would like to offer a personal year-end reflection on how we may inherit the fields of international and intercultural communication. More specifically, I wish to suggest that we (1) “create a community of a larger memory” of our fields (to borrow Dr. Ronald Takaki’s [1998] words), (2) clarify our theoretical ideas  and practical issues without sacrificing their complexities, and (3) generate knowledge that bridges differences especially from non-U.S. and non-elite perspectives.

He defended his doctoral dissertation, Dynamics of Intercultural Communication: Towards a New Conceptual Framework, at Saratov State University (Russia). He has served as Chair of the NCA Taskforce on Enhancing the Internationalization of Communication, Chair of the NCA Philosophy of Communication division, and as a member of the Russian Communication Association Steering Committee. He served as an Associate Editor of The American Journal of Semiotics and is the Founding Editor of the Russian Journal of Communication (Taylor & Francis). He organized the First International Communicology Institute Colloquium at Eastern Washington University in May 2014.

He is interested in intercultural and global communication issues as well as communication theory, philosophy of communication, semiotics, general linguistics, and translation studies. His works have been published in U.S., Russia, England, Spain, Costa Rica, Serbia, Bulgaria, India, and Morocco.

Alex Frame
is currently Associate Professor in Communication at the University of Burgundy (Dijon, France).

Alex Frame

After a degree in Modern Languages from St Catherine’s College, Oxford, he permanently moved to France at postgraduate level and has been lecturing at university (in Business English, Intercultural Communication, New Media and Political Communication, among others) since the year 2000. He is a member of the “Text – Image – Language” Research Group (EA 4182). In his PhD (2008), he developed a symbolic interactionist approach to intercultural dialogue, taking into account the possible mobilisation of various cultures and identities in face-to-face interactions. He insists on the importance of the situation, the immediate context, existing relationships and underlying tensions in understanding the way people negotiate meanings and go about seeking to make sense of and for one another, despite cultural differences.

Alex’s current research interests stem from critical approaches to interculturality, factoring in questions of identities, othering and power relations to look at the ways in which cultural dynamics underpin and are referred to by individuals in their interactions. His main focus is on the cultural dynamics of communication processes both locally and globally, as they manifest themselves in intercultural dialogue, in mediated/mediatized communication and as part of the globalization process. In 2015, he set up an English-taught MA course in (critical approaches to) Intercultural Management at the University of Burgundy.

Nordic Network Intercultural Comm conference

Separation vs. integration: Challenges of bridging cultural contrasts
20th Nordic Network for Intercultural Communication Conference

The 20th NIC symposium is organised by the Institute of Germanic, Romance and Slavonic Languages  and Literatures, University of Tartu and will be held on 28- 30 November 2013 in Tartu, Estonia. Conference call has been extended to 1 November 2013.

This conference welcomes papers from all areas of intercultural communication but aims to focus on the issues of separation and integration that have always been on the agenda in the Baltic States but have become particularly acute and sensitive for the last twenty years, after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Two cultures, Russian and Estonian have co-existed for more than two hundred years starting from the early 18th century when the Russian Empire gained control over Estonian lands by winning the war with Sweden.  Since then, numerous generations have had the opportunity to deal with the issues of separation and integration. Unfortunately, mainly due to political reasons, the integration process has not been as successful as expected.   This is where we found our inspiration for the main theme of the conference. We believe that via cooperation and discussion among intercultural communication researchers and practitioners we may manage to find solutions to problems faced by culturally different communities living side by side on a daily basis in any part of the world.  We also believe that power issues and negotiations over power are relevant to the problems involved in intercultural communication in such situations.

Therefore, we welcome contributions from all academic disciplines, including anthropology, sociology, cultural studies, political science, media and communication studies, business studies, organisational studies, educational studies, applied linguistics and sociolinguistics. We are particularly interested in case studies or theoretical papers which address issues of separation, assimilation, marginalisation and integration, as well as (discursive) power negotiations.

One of the main focuses of the Nordic Network for Intercultural Communication (NIC) is to enhance cooperation among Nordic and Baltic researchers exploring the field of intercultural communication. The main NIC activity for the last two decades has been the organisation of the annual international conference on intercultural communication, open to participants from all over the world.

Teachers/scholars of intercultural communication are all invited to submit competitive research or theoretical position chapters to be considered for inclusion in the textbook Intercultural Communication for an Evolving Global Order: A Reader (working title) to be published by Cognella, San Diego, California, USA by July 1, 2014. While any topic of intercultural communication in a global context is welcomed, the focus of new developments of intercultural communication based on the evolving global dynamics and structure as well as the emerging global trends of the early 21st century such as the relationship between intercultural communication and global citizenship and the relationship between intercultural communication and new media is particularly welcomed. Preference is also given to solid chapter contributions addressing issues of intercultural communication between emerging economies such as the BRICS and the established economies such as the G8 as well as among the BRICS countries such as China and India, China and Russia, China and Brazil, China and South Africa and so on. Last but not least, submissions addressing applied topics of intercultural communication in such sectors such as the global corporate and organizational arena, global public diplomacy, global health and global environmental changes, and global creative industry and so on are encouraged.  A variety of research approaches such as the qualitative, quantitative, and critical are accepted. The targeted readership consists of undergraduate and graduate students, interested professionals, and the general public.

Guidelines for Submission:
All submissions must conform to the latest APA style standards. Use Times New Roman, 12-font size, and single-space. A proposal of around 600 words is due along with a biography of 100 words and a list of intercultural communication or related courses by October 31, 2013. Tentative selections based on the proposals are made on the basis of originality, quality and fit. The full manuscript of 5000 to 7000 words is due on February 31, 2014. Formal selections for inclusion in the textbook are made on the basis of originality, quality, and fit.  Recommendations of already published articles fitting the theme of the book are also welcomed. The Department of Communication at the University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications for a tenured senior Associate or Full Professor faculty position, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2014.  The successful candidate will complement one or more of the Department’s core areas in interpersonal/intergroup communication, media communication, and organizational communication, and any of our cross-cutting emphases in communication and technology, media neuroscience, globalization, family, group, health, political, legal, or intercultural communication.  Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Communication or related discipline and an exceptional record of scholarship.   The successful candidate will be expected to assume the role of Chair for a 3-year term beginning July, 2016.  Thus, administrative experience is highly desirable.
