The John Carter Brown Library (an independent library on the campus of Brown University, in Providence, Rhode Island) awards over forty fellowships annually to scholars engaged in research the history of the colonial Americas, North and South, including all aspects of African, European, and Native American engagements in both global and comparative contexts.

During the pandemic, the JCB will award both residential and remote fellowship support. There is a wide variety of opportunities: short-term (2-4 months), long-term (5-10 months), fellowships for researchers in Mexico (2-4 months), remote short-term (2-4 months), and more.

This opportunity is open to masters students and above, on the assumption that some familiarity with academic conventions generally, and discussion of intercultural dialogue specifically, are useful.

In response to its continuous growth, IÉSEG School of Management invites applications for one full-time permanent position (starting September 2022) in Intercultural Communication/Management at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level (Lille Campus). The selected candidate will be a part of the Department of “People, Organizations and Negotiation”. The department consists of around 30 full-time academic staff who teach and perform research in the areas of Human Resources Management, Organization Studies, Organizational Behavior, Negotiation, Mediation and Conflict Management.

They are looking for applicants who are willing to contribute to the school’s continuous development of its particular approach to intercultural communication and the development of Cultural Intelligence (CQ) at all levels of the institution through teaching, training and research. He/she will be involved in the different activities of the Intercultural Track that has been created with the objective of consolidating and further developing the existing elements and evaluating their effectiveness at the school level. These activities are related to teaching students, training staff, and research. The candidate is expected to have a major role in implementing these activities with the existing team, and monitoring their effectiveness.

OTW’s flagship program, Global Classroom, selects and trains international college and university students and scholars to become volunteer facilitators known as “Global Guides.” With the support of the Global Classroom (GC) staff, Global Guides lead thematic, interactive and globally-focused workshops for K-12 students in the New York and New Jersey areas. As a member of the senior management team, the Director of Global Classroom will build on the GC program’s past success to expand its reach and impact.

Kamali-Chirani: Pakistan: Incoming & Outgoing Migration

Fatemeh Hippler (birth name: Kamali-Chirani), who has previously examined intercultural dialogue as part of the foreign relations between Germany and Iran, and who is now based in Pakistan, has just published a report focused on migration both into and out of that country. It is one of her final conclusions which will be of greatest interest to followers of CID:

There should be projects to connect people of Pakistan and Afghanistan culturally and socially. There is a crucial need to initiate dialogue. Although dialogue cannot solve all problems but at least it can emphasize on what both countries have in common and clarify misunderstandings about sensitive issues such as Afghanistan-India relationship and terrorism. (p. 27)

The Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity in Göttingen (Department for SocioCultural Diversity) is seeking to appoint Research fellows (wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter*innen) at the postdoctoral level. The starting date should be 1 June 2022. Contracts will be full-time for 3 years.

Successful applicants will pursue own research interests and cooperate with team members on projects relating to:

  • ambivalences of diversity assent
  • contested categories of difference
  • recognition and equality of disadvantaged populations (following on from Institute projects on urban diversity policies and political organizations

In line with the departmental focus, projects should relate to European or African contexts.

There is a separate call for a postdoc for the Max Planck Research Group Ageing in a Time of Mobility, with a start date of Spring 2022. This is a global and interdisciplinary project that investigates the interconnections between two key phenomena in the twenty-first century: ageing populations and global migration, and the new social transformations that they jointly shape. The group explores how older persons are embedded in global and translocal networks and communities and how inequalities, restrictive border regimes, and processes of displacement shape experiences of ageing and intergenerational relationships. The group focusses on the migration and mobility experiences of older populations in regions of the world that are rapidly ageing, but which have been less visible in research agendas – Asia, Africa and Latin America.

This is an open call to researchers from the social sciences, writers or journalists, or other professionals, who are currently working on a project related to this topic and who would like to benefit from one of the grants offered at faberllull.

In recent years, we have been witnessing a change of era in human mobility. In an increasingly turbulent world, international migration can no longer be explained from the classic standpoint of going to work in another country in search of greater economic well-being. Increasingly, migratory movements are conditioned by a whole host of factors related to political change, opposition to a regime, war, ideological persecution and the effects of climate change or speculative capitalism.

In recent years, the need has also arisen to think critically about migrant reception policies and to identify systematic and grassroot initiatives that could promote greater solidarity and social justice.

The aim of this residency is to offer a working space that will help fuel the inspiration and exchange of ideas between researchers from the various social sciences, as well as writers and journalists working in the fields of migration and asylum, so that they can further their current investigations and writings, and share their knowledge with other professionals in the sector.

The European Society for Transcultural and Interdisciplinary Dialogue (ESTIDIA) will hold their 6th Conference, Dialogue-shared Experiences across Space and Time: Cross-linguistic and Cross-cultural Practices, at the University of Alicante in Spain. The 6th ESTIDIA conference, like the preceding ones, offers an open forum for cross-disciplinary and multi-level dialogue among researchers and practitioners interested in exploring dialogic and discursive interaction observable across communities of practices and various social-cultural contexts.

From the Socratic dialogues to post-modern cyberchats, it is only in and through communicative interaction that we can understand the world, people, and how things are working around us. By means of dialogue people are able to argue for their viewpoints, to come to terms with each other, to jointly solve problems, and to resolve conflicts. Dialogue brings together women and men, young and old, people from the east and the west, from the north and the south. Through the creative synergy of shared thoughts, ideas, and experiences, we can travel anywhere in space and time. The ongoing proliferation of new communication channels on social media platforms (Whatsapp, Facebook, YouTube, webchat, chatbots) is expanding the opportunities for multi-participant and multi-purpose dialogue involving people from across the world willing to share information and current concerns. At the same time, however, recent trends in dialogue practices, primarily on new digital platforms, reveal worrying signs of growing misunderstanding, opinion bias, as well as extreme and conflicting position-takings. Many situations of communication break-down are caused not necessarily by faulty technology, but rather by certain users’ deliberate interference with and suppression of free public dialogue. At the core of these situations lie several communication-related paradoxes.

NOTE: The event will become hybrid if that seems necessary at the time.

Atika Alkhallouf is a Ph.D. candidate in the School of Communication, American University, Washington, DC.

Atika Alkhallouf

 

Her research interests lie at the intersection of global media, technology, and the Arab world. She has a master’s degree in Intercultural and International Communication from American University’s School of International Service. In 2020, she held the position of Adjunct Professor at American University’s Critical Race, Gender, and Culture Studies Department: Arab World Studies Program.

As an experienced translator, she believes in the power of translation in building bridges of mutual understanding and dialogue. Translation for her is an invigorating mental exercise that she highly values as a tool for knowledge sharing and knowledge transfer.
