This is a permanent (tenure track) position. The appointed candidate will join the Media and Communications team which offers three undergraduate majors (Media, Film and Television; Communication; and Screen Production) and two postgraduate programmes (Media and Communication and Screen Production). The university also has two PhD programmes: an academic PhD and a PhD with creative practice.

The ideal candidate will have an area of expertise which may include critical analyses of advertising, journalism, algorithm studies or other approaches to social media and digital platforms. But there is also interest in seeing applications from researchers who explore how gender, ethnicity, and indigeneity intersect with digital cultures. Applicants welcome who combine academic qualifications and research with prior work experience in professional or applied contexts. Candidates will be expected to have familiarity with both quantitative and qualitative research methods in the fields of Media Studies and Communication.

The HKBU Translation Programme was established in 1990, and from 1 September 2019 will become the Department of Translation, Interpreting and Intercultural Studies, having been awarded full independent departmental status.

The Department offers programmes at BA, MA and Research Postgraduate levels, and is among the most internationalized such departments in the region, with an academic staff that comprises members from Hong Kong, Mainland, Taiwan, Spain, the UK and Australia. The Department has particular strengths in literary translation, minority cultures in translation, and interpreting, and is also seeking to expand its profile in the field of translation technology.

The Department is now seeking applicants for the above position. Applicants from all areas of the discipline will be considered. Preference will be given to those with expertise in one of the following clusters: (i) translation technology, translation-related applications of big data, and localization; (ii) interpreting studies; and (iii) minority translation studies. The ability to teach related linguistics courses will be considered an advantage. Given the Chinese/English orientation of the majority of the Department’s course offerings, a command of Chinese is expected.
