The candidate/applicant has a Romance research and teaching profile in the area of linguistics, with a focus on plurilingualism and interculturality. At the Faculty of Philosophy and Education of the University of Vienna the position of a University Professor of Intercultural Philosophy (full time, permanent position) is to be filled. The successful applicant should have a research focus in at least one of the non-European philosophies and is expected to demonstrate excellence in this area. They also require expertise in current discourses on intercultural philosophy, transcultural philosophy or cross-cultural philosophy.
Tenure-Track Professorship in Media and Intersectionality, Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Vienna, Austria. Deadline: 18 September 2019.
In research and teaching, this position should cover the role of media for the intersection of various categories of difference, especially with regard to gender but also ethnicity, class, nationality, sexuality, and/or age. Knowledge on theories and methods of communication science as well as in Gender respectively Intersectionality Studies is required. The position is open to the full range of epistemological approaches within the area of communication research.
Successful candidates should have the following qualifications:
Doctoral degree/PhD and at least two years post-doctoral experience at a university or other research institution; as a general rule, applicants must have gained research experience outside the University of Vienna for a total of at least two years during or after their doctoral studies
Outstanding achievements and potential in research, excellent publication record, international reputation
Experience in designing and participating in research projects, ability to lead research groups, willingness to acquire third-party funding
Enthusiasm for excellent teaching, teaching experience at universities or a teaching concept. Candidates are expected to be willing to teach students at all levels (bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral level), to supervise academic theses and to promote junior colleagues
The University of Vienna expects the successful candidate to acquire, within three years, proficiency in German sufficient for teaching in bachelor’s programmes and for participation in university committees.

The Department of Linguistics is a sub-unit of the Faculty of Philological and Cultural Studies consisting of four chairs (General Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Comparative Indo-European Linguistics and Subject Didactics [Language Teaching and Learning Research]). The announced postdoc position is assigned to Applied Linguistics.
Applied Linguistics deals with language in its social context and practice. In the context of this department, this primarily covers sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, text and media research, conversation analysis, research on institutional/organizational communication, multilingualism, language policy as well as (meta)pragmatics. Applied Linguistics is conceived as an empirically driven, theory-building discipline, striving to take a stance on linguistic issues within societal discourse. In the context of the Department of Linguistics, Applied Linguistics is furthermore committed to the common institutional goal of exploring language in a comprehensive sense (as a system, competence and social practice).
The successful candidate should represent Applied Linguistics with a focus on institutional/organizational communication. The candidate should have a research focus on oral data.
CITP/MiLab Spring 2015 Doctoral Workshop
The Center for Information Technology Policy (CITP) at Princeton University and the Media Innovation Lab (MiLab) at the University of Vienna are pleased to announce our inaugural Doctoral Workshop to be held April 6th to April 8th, 2015 at Princeton University.
The workshop will be led by Ed Felten, the Robert E. Kahn Professor of Computer Science and Public Affairs and Director of CITP at Princeton University, and Homero Gil de Zúñiga, who holds the Medienwandel Professorship in the Department of Communication and leads the MiLab at the University of Vienna.
The goal of the workshop is to provide a forum for leading doctoral students to present their late-stage research to experts in the field, receive feedback and advice, and gain exposure to related work in other disciplines. We seek to provide a helpful, interactive experience for students, to highlight the work of rising stars in this area, and to foster interdisciplinary collaboration.
Participants will be selected through a competitive review process. We expect to invite about 8 doctoral students to attend. We will provide support for travel and lodging up to $500 per attendee. Students are encouraged to submit dissertation relevant work; abstracts and shorter proposals will not be accepted.
Research topics should focus on the interplay between information and communication technologies and the social, political, civic, and governmental spheres. We welcome applications from doctoral students doing relevant work in any discipline, including communication studies, computer science, economics, political science, and sociology. Possible topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
– Citizen journalism
– Civic engagement and digital technology
– E-voting security
– Internet governance
– Open government data
– Privacy technologies for democratic ends
– Social media and political expression
– State-sponsored internet freedom programs
