U Cyprus 2nd language teaching

The University of Cyprus (School of Modern Greek) is looking for partners for an international research project with the provisional title “Development of training courses for second language teaching”. Partners can be institutions of higher education, adult education institutions, teacher training institutions or similar from EU and non EU countries. The working language will be English while the results of the project will be translated in all partner languages. An application for funding will be submitted to the EU Life Long Learning program under the 2012 call for multilateral projects. The deadline for submission is 2/2/2012 and at least 3 partners from EU countries are needed for the consortium.

Project description
The project duration will be 2 years starting in October 2012.

The first task will be to conduct research into second language teaching in adult education as opposed to foreign language teaching. The aim of this research will be to define the sociolinguistic and pedagogical issues with which teachers of second language are confronted eg. the role of language for successful integration, the acquisition of skills for intercultural communication, the social status and the learning experiences of the learners, the teaching of groups of mixed language and ability.

After defining the area of second language teaching and the special needs of teachers in this area the project will develop a framework for a course for teacher training in the subject as well as for In-service-training courses on special subjects for teachers already active in the field. This framework will then be adapted by each partner institution according to the individual situation of the country it resides in and on the basis of these adaptations trial courses will be conducted.

The next step of the project will be to develop a train-the-trainer course in order to secure that there will be qualified persons who will conduct the above mentioned teacher training courses in future. Finally the project will set up a framework for the accreditation of qualifications for second language teaching on a European level.

We would particularly be interested in cooperating with institutions working in similar linguistic environments. The main linguistic variety on the island of Cyprus is the Cypriot Greek dialect, which is widely spoken in most communicative settings. Teaching standard modern Greek as a second language in such a linguistic environment presents additional challenges for the language teacher, which we intend to address as part of the training program.

NCA 2011

On November 20, 2011 I presented “Learning to walk like a local: Applying Goffman’s theory of face to pedestrian behavior” at the National Communication Association convention held in New Orleans, LA. My co-author for the paper was Prof Yves Winkin, Director of the Institut Français de l’Education in Lyon, France, and we divided up the presentation. My thanks to Prof. Beth Haslett for organzing the panel, and inviting us to participate.

While at NCA I met with several members of the Advisory Board of the Center for Intercultural Dialogue (Profs Donal Carbaugh and Barbara Hines) as well as the Center’s Technology adviser, Dr. Brenda Berkelaar, and the President of the Council of Communication Associations, Prof. Patrice Buzzanell. I also met with dozens of scholars about the Center, participated in business meetings for several divisions of NCA and, of course, attended sessions. A number of those who participated in the NCA Summer Conference on Intercultural Dialogue in 2009 were at NCA, and I had a chance to talk with at least half a dozen. Several people made very good suggestions for additions to the website – so look for what’s new in the coming months!

Randolph-Macon College is seeking an Assistant Professor of Communication Studies to teach advanced undergraduate courses in interpersonal, group, and intercultural communication. This faculty member will join her or his communication studies colleagues in teaching core theory/research courses in major, in team-teaching a proposed general education introduction to the discipline, in providing some basic instruction in communication skills, and in occasionally offering an interdisciplinary seminar in the college’s “first-year experience” program.

More specifically, a typical year’s schedule for this position would be:
2 advanced undergraduate courses in interpersonal, group, or intercultural communication (6 credit hours);
either Communication Theory, Communication Research Methods, or Senior Seminar (3 credit hours);
2 sections of COMM 215–Interpersonal and Small Group Communication (6 credit hours);
Team-teaching 2 sections of a proposed Introduction to Communication Studies (2 credit hours);
Providing speech communication instruction embedded in 8 “first-year experience” courses (4 credit hours; 24-48 clock hours);

The successful candidate, then, would typically have an annual 21 credit hour teaching load. The college norm for full-time faculty is between 20 and 22.

Ph.D. in communication studies or closely related discipline should be in-hand or anticipated by 9/1/12. Teaching experienced, preferably at the undergraduate level, is required, as is potential for significant professional activity in faculty member’s area of specialization. Familiarity with a liberal arts college environment as either a faculty member ir a student desirable.

Randolph-Macon  College is a traditional, residential liberal arts college growing to an enrollment of 1,500 undergraduates. It is located in central Virginia, 15 miles North of Richmond and 90 miles South of Washington, DC.

The communication studies major and department are new, the major approved in 10/11 and the department formed in 7/11. Enrollment is healthy, and new courses are already being added. The major situates itself in the liberal arts context by integrating coursework in rhetoric, mass communication, and the broadly-defined interpersonal area and by emphasizing the theory and research of the discipline while not neglecting its applied dimensions.

On November 8, 2011, I presented a talk entitled “Intercultural weddings and the simultaneous display of multiple identities” to the Escola Superior de Educação de Coimbra, Politécnico de Coimbra, Portugal.

Coimbra posterOn November 9, 2011, I presented another talk entitled “Constructing a community of practice around the scholarship of teaching and learning: The role of centers for teaching excellence” to the Centro de Inovação e Estudo da Pedagogia no Ensino Superior, also part of the Politécnico de Coimbra.

My host was Dr. Susana Gonçalves, Director of the Centro de Inovação e Estudo da Pedagogia no Ensino Superior (Center for Innovation and Higher Education Pedagogy) at the Politécnico.
After the talk, Susana, her colleague Mark Carpenter, and Dr. Maria João Pinto Cardoso, the Vice President of the Politécnico, made time for lunch and followup conversation about future activities.

My thanks to Susana for inviting me to come to Coimbra, and to Mark and his wife Carmo, for offering me and my husband gracious hospitality at their home for our few days in Coimbra. Mark and Susana made time to give us the grand tour of the old city.

While in Coimbra, I had time to meet with Dr. Nancy Duxbury, a Canadian scholar I had not seen in several years, currently part of the Research Group on Cities, Culture and Architecture, a project of the Centro de Estudos Scoials at the Universidade de Coimbra.

I look forward to future connections with all of these colleagues.
