As always, if there is a concept you think should be written up as one of the Key Concepts, whether in English or any other language, propose it. If you are new to CID, please provide a brief resume. This opportunity is open to masters students and above, on the assumption that some familiarity with academic conventions generally, and discussion of intercultural dialogue specifically, are useful.

The ideal candidate should be able to teach introductory classes such as Introduction to Communication, Principles of Oral Communication, and Intercultural Communication. CFP Negotiating Gender & Sexualities in Asian Language Communities

Decades of interdisciplinary work have indicated how language, gender and sexualities are co-constructed. This intersection constitutes a highly interdisciplinary field, thus drawing on a variety of pertinent fields, such as Sociolinguistics, Cultural and Political Anthropology, Discourse Analysis, Feminism, Critical Theory, and Media studies, to name a few. Currently, research on language, gender and sexualities acknowledges the junctures among these fields, focusing on the complexities and hybridities that may emerge from their interactions. This dynamic has influenced academic work, and more broadly larger society, the professional sector, and politics.

However, diverse linguistic and discursive practices of gender and sexualities have been under unequal scrutiny, with most work concerning English or Romance languages. It is therefore necessary to bring analysis on the co-construction of gender, sexualities and language to a larger variety of social contexts. Focusing on Asian language communities allows scholarship not only to enrich the knowledge of gender and sexualities, but also to discuss how systems, assignations and identities intertwine in various political, historical, social and cultural contexts. Asian linguistic and discursive landscapes offer a unique vantage point from which to view this intertwinement, and to develop new models of gender and sexuality which lie beyond our current knowledge.

MOOC on Children Deprived of Liberty (Italy)

“MOOCs”MOOC (Massive Open Online Course): Children Deprived of Liberty: Learning from the UN Global Study, Global Campus of Human Rights, Italy. Course dates: 18 November 2019-19 January 2020. Free enrollment until 31 December 2019.

Despite the fact that the Convention on the Rights of the Child affirms that, in principle, children should not be detained and deprivation of liberty should be a measure of last resort, millions of children in the world are locked away. To address this problem, the United Nations appointed Manfred Nowak as Independent Expert to lead the Global Study on children deprived of liberty. This unique MOOC stems from this study and provides insights, learning and recommendations in this important area at the crossroad of children, violence, and human rights studies.

The MOOC is free and designed for participants who are actively interested and engaged in children’s rights work and wish to deepen their knowledge about the protection of children deprived of liberty.

US-Japan Leadership Program 2020/21 (US/Japan)

FellowshipsCall for applications: US-Japan Leadership Program (USJLP), participants expected to be in Seattle, WA July 11-18, 2020 and Japan, July 25-Aug 1, 2021. Deadline: December 9, 2019.

USJLP is the flagship program of the United States-Japan Foundation. USJLP is now accepting applications to the Seattle 2020 and Japan 2021 conferences through Monday, December 9, 2019. The upcoming Seattle 2020 is set to take place from Saturday, July 11 – Saturday, July 18, 2020. Delegates who start the Program in 2020 will return for their second year at the 2021 conference, currently scheduled to be held in Japan from Sunday, July 25 – Sunday, August 1, 2021.

The US-Japan Leadership Program (USJLP) launched in 2000 with the purpose of developing a network of communication, friendship and understanding among the next generation of leaders in each country.  With the goal of bridging the gap between East and West, the Program fosters a continuing dialogue among future leaders in a broad variety of professions. It starts this process by bringing some young leaders together from each country for two intensive weeklong conferences over two years, with discussions revolving around historical and current issues in bilateral relations, as well as issues reaching beyond our two countries. Through serious conversation as well as recreation and shared cultural activities it seeks to nurture lifelong friendships. The Program is designed to keep the leaders in touch with each other throughout their careers through a dedicated website and member directory, frequent reunions and newsletters, and online social networks.

All members hold US or Japanese citizenship, enter the Program between the ages of 28-42 and have demonstrated leadership in their respective fields. Membership requires a commitment to participate in two consecutive summer conferences as a Delegate (one in Japan, and one in Seattle), and the intent to remain active in the Program as a Fellow (alumnus).
