You are invited to submit your proposal (abstract/ poster/ round table /workshop/) to be considered for presentation at ICCM2020, that will take place 3-7 May 2020, in Athens, Greece, organized by the Communication Institute of Greece and endorsed by the King Graduate School at Monroe College, in USA and the Media Informatics Lab, School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, in Greece.

ICCM2020 aims to provide an opportunity for Academics, Professionals and Industry Experts from various fields, with cross-disciplinary interests, to discuss the future directives and innovations in their field of study. This year there will be four thematic panels:

ProfilesZhichao Qiu (M.A. New York University, 2017, B.A. Ohio State University & Beijing International Studies University, 2016) is currently a program manager at International Division, Beihang University, Beijing, China.

Zhichao Qiu

He earned his M.A. degree from New York University in Foreign Language Education with a focus on Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. His research interests include the internationalization of higher education and cross-cultural communication. He has experiences not only in teaching foreign languages, but also in managing partnerships, student mobility programs, and intercultural training. His pioneering project “Buddy Program” at Beihang University has equipped over 300 students with advanced intercultural communication skills and global competence.

He is committed to pursuing research and professional work in intercultural communication and international higher education as his lifelong career.

Beyond Conflict: Project Lead for Decoding Dehumanization (USA)

Beyond Conflict Innovation Lab is seeking a Project Lead for its Decoding Dehumanization project: a research and policy initiative designed to create evidence-based approaches to preventing group-targeted harm (such as systemic discrimination, or mass atrocities) by interrupting the dehumanization process or developing interventions which rehumanize. The Project Lead will work with the team at Beyond Conflict and the Innovation Lab, and will be located in Boston.

The Beyond Conflict Innovation Lab, a research and development unit within Beyond Conflict, was created to apply behavioral and brain science to real-world issues by discovering, developing and deploying new tools that reduce conflict and facilitate positive social change.

The Decoding Dehumanization project aims to develop and test interventions aimed at reducing dehumanization and support for violence and apply the research to real-world policy through partnerships with governmental and non-governmental organizations, in the US and internationally. Current project intervention sites include Nigeria, and working with US-based groups focused on migrant issues.

This is a grant-funded position that begins in the Fall of 2019 and will last until September 2020 with potential for an extension through February 2023. The Project Lead’s primary responsibility will be to coordinate and manage the implementation of the Decoding Dehumanization project. In this capacity, (s)he will work closely with Beyond Conflict Innovation Lab staff members, Beyond Conflict scientists, and other internal and external stakeholders to advance the mission of the Beyond Conflict Innovation Lab and the Decoding Dehumanization project.

With expansive networks moving at breakthrough speeds and intensities, the very concepts of diversity and multiculturalism are changing, especially as they encounter forces of environmental change, nationalism, populism, and hegemony. What does it mean to live in a multicultural society? How do we create community, resolve conflicts, in complicated religious, linguistic, educational, and cultural contexts? What happens to minorities and indigenous peoples within larger majority cultures?

The theme of this conference seeks to address these issues in the context of nations and the larger world.

Intercultural Communication MOOC (China)

MOOC (Massive Open Online Course): Intercultural Communication. Starts: October 14, 2019 (may be joined late)

Learn to appreciate, adjust to, and work or study in different cultures, with this free online intercultural communication course. This course assumes no prior knowledge and is suitable for pre-university, undergraduate and post-experience students. It does require high school-level English or above, an interest in international issues, and curiosity about, exposure to or experience with other cultures.

Taught by Steve Kulich, Hongling Zhang, and Ruobing Chi, all at the Intercultural Institute of Shanghai International Studies University, China, on the FutureLearn platform. Among the intercultural offerings now online, the SISU course encourages non-western perspectives and focuses on clarifying learner’s identities, preferences and approaches to interaction in intercultural contexts.

Other relevant MOOCs on this platform include Cultures and Identities in Europe by the European University Institute, Italy; Introduction to Intercultural Studies: The Concept of Culture, Introduction to Intercultural Studies: Intercultural Contact by the University of Leeds, England, and Multilingual Practices: Tackling Challenges and Creating Opportunities (by the University of Groningen, The Netherlands). Joining all of these courses is free, but students pay a fee if they want a Certificate of Achievement documenting participation.

Center for a Public Anthropology Competition for Book Publication

“PublicationPublic Anthropology: Competition to publish an open access book in a new series. Deadline: November 4, 2019.

Drawing on the example of the California Series in Public Anthropology, the Center for a Public Anthropology announces a New Open-Access Book Series that addresses important public issues.  It embraces the hope that anthropology has value to those beyond the discipline, beyond the university.  The focus is on publications that matter to other people – by the power of their ideas and by how, with the help of others, they transform peoples’ lives for the better. It is one thing to write a thoughtful book. It is another to do so in a manner that attracts the attention and collaboration needed to help address a problem.

Each year the Center holds an international competition seeking out prospective manuscripts that align with this vision.  The Series reviews proposals independent of whether the manuscripts themselves have been completed.  The proposals submitted should be 3-4,000 words long and describe both the overall work as well as a general summary of what is (or will be) in each chapter. The Center expects to select, through the competition, one to two books each year for open-acess publication.  The selected manuscripts will then go through a “sighted peer review” process.  Rather than being “blind”, the review process will be an open, collaborative endeavor between an author and reviewers.
