KAICIID Fellows

KAICIID Fellows Programme

In 2013, King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Centre for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue, in Vienna, Austria, will launch an international fellowship project. The “KAICIID Fellows” will be people who are planning to become religious functionaries and educators. The programme will run 2-4 times a year, where a Jury, chosen from the Centre’s Advisory Forum, will select five “Fellows” among applicants from the five major world religions. Coming from different regions and different faiths, these students will spend one to four months working and studying together in Vienna to deepen their knowledge about each others’ religions and to strengthen their commitment to interreligious dialogue. As potential future leaders within their respective religious communities, it is hoped that they will become multipliers of KAICIID’s mission for interreligious dialogue once they are back home.

During their stay in Vienna, they will have the possibility to work on their own research project, but they will also be given the opportunity to learn about other religions, both within their own group and by visiting university classes.

The “Fellows” will also contribute to and actively participate in KAICIID‘s activities, thus enhancing their interreligious insight, organisational competence and future leadership presence and impact. Instead of a final report, each participant will be asked to write a book chapter about her or his personal interreligious learning at KAICIID.

Objectives
*Engage students from different faiths, cultures and regions in interreligious dialogue on neutral ground;
*Facilitate a deep, long-lasting dialogue encounter;
*Give future religious leaders the tools, experience, networks and knowledge to pursue interreligious dialogue in their profession;
*Provide KAICIID with young people from different religious backgrounds who will actively participate and contribute to the Centre’s activities and programmes.

KAICIID will also provide a platform for alumni activities for its former “Fellows” to enable them to stay in contact and to reach out to further potential candidates for the programme.

Writing in Liberal Arts postdoc

Writing in the Liberal Arts Postdoctoral Fellow

Davidson College is seeking a person to teach in its College Writing Program, which focuses on the production of intellectual and academic discourses in the public and scholarly spheres. This individual (PhD required in the Sciences, Social Sciences, or Humanities) will annually teach three first-year writing courses designed around issues that are of interest to both disciplinary practitioners and wider readerships, and two writing-attentive courses that examine the traditions of inquiry and modes of scholarly exchange particular to the fellow’s home discipline. The position will be attractive to those interested in undergraduate pedagogy, curricular design, and intellectual life in a select liberal arts setting that values innovation, service, and leadership in its students. The position provides opportunities to examine how discourse informs civic argument, cultural critique, or scientific inquiry in the liberal-educational tradition. The length of appointment is two years.

Applicants should apply online and submit a letter of interest, a CV, and a writing sample (no longer than 10 pages in length).

Davidson College is strongly committed to achieving excellence and cultural diversity, and welcomes applications from women, members of minority groups, and others who would bring additional dimensions to the college’s mission.

Questions should be directed to Dr. Van Hillard at vahillard AT davidson.edu.

NSF int’l fellowships

NSF Graduate Research Fellows offered new opportunities to pursue research abroad

NSF Director Subra Suresh has announced Graduate Research Opportunities Worldwide (GROW), a new and coordinated effort that will expand and enhance international collaborative research opportunities for NSF Graduate Research Fellows, with initial agreements with science agencies in eight countries.

“Today’s graduate students being trained as scientists and engineers in the U.S. will increasingly collaborate and compete with their peers from around the globe throughout their career,” said Suresh. “GROW will prepare NSF Graduate Research Fellows (GRFs) to engage successfully in the global research enterprise by connecting them to leading scientists and research infrastructure around the world.”

GROW builds on a program NSF has sponsored for several years with researchers in Norway, Finland, Denmark and Sweden. Under GROW, these opportunities are expanded and enhanced, and a streamlined and well-coordinated process has been developed to connect a much larger cohort of NSF GRFs to a number of strategically selected educational and research institutions around the world.

“This program gives an opportunity to promote international cooperation at a very early stage of a scientific career,” said Sofie Björling of the Swedish Embassy’s Office of Science and Innovation. “It creates bonds that can last for a long time and can involve many more persons than the GRF alone. This is of great benefit to science as a whole and really fits into the thinking that science is without borders.”

The Fellows, selected through the normal process through the NSF GRF Program and invited to participate in GROW, will be hosted by a science agency in a partner country for a period of three to 12 months. While overseas, they receive a living allowance from the host country as they pursue their research in a host institution. They will also be eligible to receive an international travel allowance from NSF. In addition to the four Nordic countries, GROW plans to include inaugural co-funding partner agencies from Japan, South Korea, Singapore and France. It is anticipated that additional partners from NSF counterpart agencies from other countries will join GROW in the months ahead.

“Having these graduate students step outside their comfort zones personally and professionally will enable intellectual growth and provide a broader perspective on research challenges and opportunities,” said Joan Ferrini-Mundy, NSF assistant director for Education and Human Resources.

“GROW supports NSF’s broader commitment to address the internationalization of science and engineering and to provide multiple pathways to engagement with top researchers worldwide,” noted David Stonner, head of NSF’s Office of International Science and Engineering. “GROW joins other recent NSF efforts such as Science Across Virtual Institutes (SAVI) and Partnerships for Enhanced Engagement in Research (PEER) in providing mechanisms to foster international partnerships and address global challenges.”

GROW was announced as part of a celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Graduate Research Fellowship Program, NSF’s flagship program for graduate students in the science and engineering fields within NSF’s mission. The program has been in operation almost as long as NSF itself, making an investment in students with demonstrated potential for significant achievements in science and engineering. Some 40 NSF-selected GRFs have won the Nobel Prize.

The program has continued to evolve over six decades, and is now providing opportunities for students to conduct research that is increasingly interdisciplinary. Today’s Graduate Research Fellows can also gain experience and mentoring outside the lab–in entrepreneurship, business, industry or government.

More information about GROW is available on the GROW website.

More information about NSF international opportunities is available on the Office of International Science and Engineering website.

Studentship-intercultural and health

The development of intercultural competence among medical students
King’s College London

First supervisor: Shuangyu Li
Second supervisor: Ben Rampton
Division: Medical Education
Type of programme: 4 years
Project code: MELiS

Project description: There is growing recognition of the need to develop intercultural competence among medical students, and this is reflected in the GMC’s Tomorrow’s Doctors 2009 and DoH’s the Race Equality Action 2004. But research suggests that intercultural training lacks coherence in UK medical schools, and the situation of international students is also a source of concern. Within this problem-space, this studentship addresses 3 questions at the interface of medical education and linguistic ethnography:

– what kinds of contribution to intercultural competence development derive from which settings, taking into account the full range of formal and informal contexts in which medical students participate?

– how far and in what ways are the intercultural learning needs of home and international students complementary or divergent?

– what are the implications for training?

Objectives for each year:
Year 1: a. review training frameworks and facilities available in UK medical schools; b. develop research skills c. design research tools year
Year 2: a. conduct ethnographic investigation with medical students at KCL
Year 3: a. analysis data; b. consider publications in journals and conferences
Year 4: write up and disseminate results.

The studentship will draw on training provided both by the Centre for Language Discourse & Communication and the College’s ESRC Doctoral Training Centre, and it will be affiliated to the DTC’s Education, Mind and Society Theme.
