The Department of Culture, Communication and Media (CCM) is a department of the Institute of Education. This lecturership in Language and Intercultural Communication will be located in the International Centre for Intercultural Studies and the Centre for Applied Linguistics. The newly established International Centre for Intercultural Studies promotes intellectually rigorous, practically relevant and interdisciplinary Intercultural Studies that advance understanding of the role of culture in society, education and communication and inform intercultural practices and policy.

The UCL Centre for Applied Linguistics is dedicated to research in Applied Linguistics. It has as its mission to promote IOE as a centre of international excellence in research and teaching in applied linguistics. The post holder will contribute to Masters, PhD programmes and other programmes in the Centres and to research knowledge exchange and consultancy activities in the Centres. You will play a significant role in planning and development of the International Centre for Intercultural Studies. The post holder will contribute to the advancement of scholarship in the fields of Intercultural Communication and Applied Linguistics, through publications and other research activities. You will take a part in academic policy and planning at programme, department, and institutional levels. You will teach specialist modules on the MA Intercultural Communication and MA Applied Linguistics in areas of language and intercultural communication, and language and identity.

You will have PhD in Intercultural Communication, Applied Linguistics, or closely relevant subject areas, and have a sound knowledge of key concepts, debates and challenges in Intercultural Communication and Applied Linguistics. You will also have experience of teaching at postgraduate levels and have good understanding of the learning needs of a diverse body of students.

The ninth EELC conference follows a series of global crises epitomised by moments of spectacular disruption, such as the so-called ‘2008 economic crisis’ or the ‘COVID-19 pandemic’. But far from representing isolated events, these build on long-standing processes, practices and experiences of inequality which are increasingly at the centre of more and more people’s daily lives. The conference aims to provide a platform to reflect on the types of alliances that ethnographic and language scholarship might be able to generate in the (un)making of such inequalities.

Applications are invited for the teaching and research post of Lecturer in Intercultural Communication. The post is tenable from 1 September 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter, and offered on an open-ended basis. The appointed person will teach in the MA programme in Intercultural Communication. You must have a PhD (awarded) in a relevant field and demonstrable teaching experience in Intercultural Communication at university level as well as in curriculum/programme development.

You must be able to deliver courses that successfully cover or combine the study of several of the following:

  • Intercultural communication in the context of crisis communication, diplomacy, international development, international migration
  • Intercultural communication in international media production and consumption
  • Intercultural communication in business or institutional contexts
  • Intercultural communication in transnational popular culture
  • Intercultural competence skills training

Your research may focus on any aspect of Intercultural Communication. Only applicants with high quality publications will be considered. A successful record of grant capture and of PhD supervision would be highly advantageous. Experience with virtual learning environments and in developing online teaching materials is essential. Expertise in translation studies and/or foreign language proficiency would be beneficial. You must have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to empathise with students.

The School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences (ECLS) is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Intercultural Communication. The successful applicant will be part of a diverse and collegiate team of academics, researchers and professional support staff delivering high quality teaching and research in the Applied Linguistics & Communication (ALC) subject area. You will have a strong background in Intercultural Communication and will have expertise in international workplaces, virtual exchange, migration and mobility, or minoritised communities.

You will carry out high quality research in the area of Intercultural Communication, contributing to the profile and research culture of the ALC subject area, the School of ECLS, and the relevant research centres and institutes across the University.

You will make a significant contribution to teaching, personal tutoring, and supervision within the ALC subject area, particularly on the suite of MA Cross-Cultural Communication programmes, and also at undergraduate level. Preferably, you will have experience of teaching Sociolinguistics and/or Research Methods at postgraduate level. You will, where appropriate, make a contribution to academic administration within the School.

Call for papers: 5th Academy of Professional Dialogue conference: Dialogue as Story, 1-3 November, 2022, UK but Online. Deadline: none listed.

The Academy of Professional Dialogue (AofPD) will be holding its fifth Annual Conference online from Tuesday 1st November to Thursday 3rd November. This year’s theme will be ‘Dialogue as Story’. The idea behind this is that when people come into any Dialogue, they bring their own story. This is closely connected with the idea of ‘identity’. The stories we have about ourselves form our identities.

This also applies to groups of people. Groups frequently come together around their shared stories, and over time they may also create new stories together. Different people and groups also often have different stories about the same thing – for example, in organisations, people at different levels and in different parts of an organisation will probably have different stories about the organisation they are all part of. All these different stories lead to fragmentation between different people and different groups. Dialogue provides a means of sharing and understanding the different stories, reducing this fragmentation, and ultimately helping to change everyone’s story going forward. It’s probably worth saying that this isn’t the same as ‘Storytelling’. In fact, ‘Storytelling’ itself is more about monologue. Instead, Dialogue is key to exploring, revealing and understanding different stories.

A new, independent think tank seeks an enthusiastic and rigorous migration researcher who is able to help inform and frame migration policy discussion by effectively engaging decision makers and other audiences. Do you share our drive to promote a more constructive approach to migration? Can you help develop ways to shape and inform new approaches to migration through research, policy influence and inclusive engagement? Can you apply your strong grounding in research methods to real-world challenges in a changing context?

Migration Policy Scotland (MPS) was launched in 2021 and they are seeking a Researcher or Senior Researcher to work alongside their Director. The Trustees and Director can picture a number of ways in which an individual might help strengthen MPS and its work through this role. As a result, they are seeking EITHER a full-time Researcher or a part-time Senior Researcher but recognise that candidates may have skills and experiences that cut across the two roles. This is a remote working opportunity and could be based anywhere in Scotland, but it is likely to involve regular meetings, particularly in Edinburgh.

The successful candidate will combine a commitment to intellectual rigour with a keen strategic awareness and the ability to communicate the results of research to audiences in policy, the third sector and, possibly, the media.
