This PhD position invites applicants with an interest in challenging and pluralising futures-oriented trajectories for educational technology. Specifically, the position will connect with the critical creative scholarship and cultural production in the fields of Afro- and/or Indigenous- Futurisms. These futurisms trouble linear narratives of progress, recognise multiple temporal framings for change and development, acknowledge the history and current impact of coloniality and creatively harness technological innovation to imagine radically transformed futures of justice. The successful candidate will propose a novel, critically engaged proposal that puts the field of educational technology into dialogue with this literature.

They invite proposals that identify new research questions, field sites for study and partners for collaboration in which Afro- and/or Indigenous Futures perspectives might open up new sites of possibility for rethinking or remaking sociodigital futures in education. The choice of research approach is open and might include everything from documentary analysis to ethnography, classroom practice and participatory action research to arts-based practice. They are open to different sites of education– both formal and informal sites of learning are potential candidates for study.

Do you have a good first degree in a relevant social science subject? If so, have you considered applying for an ESRC Migration Studies pathway competition Studentship, available through the Grand Union Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP)?Applications are invited for entry in October 2023. You must apply for the studentship at the same time as you apply for your degree.

There are two routes you can take:

*The Migration Studies Studentships are not intended for taught master’s degrees on their own. To apply you must be planning to undertake a doctorate. Please also note that successful admission to the doctoral programme is subject to approval by the relevant department’s DPhil Admissions Committee.

The ESRC awarded the DTP Migration Studies Studentships in recognition of research strength in interdisciplinary migration studies, and the two taught masters are offered by Anthropology and International Development (the MSc in Migration Studies) and International Development (the MSc in Refugee and Forced Migration Studies) respectively. Students on the 1+3 pathway may progress from one of these masters to doctorates in Migration Studies, International Development, Anthropology, Politics and International Relations, Geography, Law, Sociology, Economics or another appropriate department.

SS Great Britain: Global Histories Ambassador/Research Fellow (UK)

The Global Histories Ambassador and Research Fellow will become part of the Brunel Institute team of innovative experts, each of whom holds particular skillset that crosses the boundaries of the normal museum, academic and heritage roles, and will actively collaborate to engage with people locally, regionally and internationally.

The postholder will play a key role in the development of the Trust by researching and making relevant for modern audiences the global histories and interconnections pioneered in particular by the revolutionary ships Great Western and Great Britain. The candidate will enjoy researching with historical materials and have the ability to link people and stories together, while working to unlock the barriers that diverse audiences can face when visiting and engaging with heritage sites. The most tangible outcome of this work will be the ‘Global Messdeck’ a multi-use story space and flexible gallery situated in the proposed new Albion dockyard site, and through which the Trust will engage visitors from all backgrounds and places to welcome, introduce, explore, publish and curate stories and histories of mobility, communication and globalization as they relate to Brunel’s historic vessels and to all our lives and communities today.

Inspired by and supporting the development of the Trust’s Albion Dock and Brunel Country project the postholder will play a key role in supporting primary research, interpretation, and education work, and in sharing learning across the sector. The expanded Brunel Institute team will be part of the programme to increase access to, and understanding of, the SS Great Britain, PS Great Western, science, engineering and conservation, maritime migration and the legacy of Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s life and work.

The University of Manchester seeks to appoint a Lecturer in Global Development (Teaching and Research) within the Global Development Institute (GDI). This post will enhance the GDI’s research and teaching capacity in global development, in particular on the theoretical and empirical analysis of labour, gender and/or environmental sustainability in global production. The GDI has made significant advances in research and policy on global value chains and production networks, in particular through the ‘Capturing the Gains: Economic and Social Upgrading in Global Value Chains’ programme (2008-2014), the ‘Rising Powers and Interdependent Futures’ programme (2010-2017) and the ‘Shifting South: Decent Work and Regional Value Chains’ study (2019-21).

This new appointment is expected to contribute to and help lead the next iteration of policy focused research at GDI on these critical areas. All of these come together at Migration Oxford.

The aim of the Migration Oxford podcast is to bring together researchers and other observers to address the major migration issues of our time, both in UK and internationally. Forty years ago, in 1982, the Refugee Studies Centre was founded at the University of Oxford. Its aim was to understand the causes, consequences, and responses to forced migration. Throughout its history, a common theme has been to explore and recognise the agency of refugees, viewing forcibly displaced people as social, economic, and political actors. Through its research, teaching, and outreach it has tried to include the perspectives, lived experiences, and voice of displaced people. The RSC is therefore delighted that the theme for its 40th Anniversary Conference is Recognising Refugees, held in association with the RefMig project. This theme is intended to generate reflection on the processes and practices through which refugees and displaced people are formally and informally recognised by societies, institutions, and governments. It will explore, for instance, the processes through which they are officially identified; how these processes are shaped by politics, law and other social forces; the extent to which forced migrants recognise themselves as refugees and choose to seek formal recognition; the assumptions and understandings that lead to the misrecognition or non-recognition of refugees at local, national, and international level; and refugee leadership.

SOAS U London: 2 Postdocs in Pan-African Frontiers (UK)

The Department of Politics and International Studies, SOAS University of London, is looking for two Postdoctoral Researchers in ‘Regional Security in Africa’ and ‘African and Caribbean identities in the UK,’ as part of Pan-African frontiers. This is a highly collaborative and multi-disciplinary project led by Dr Daniel Mulugeta, exploring contemporary intellectual and policy discourse around pan-Africanism. The project intends to understand how to approach ideas from Africa and African diasporas. The research involves in-depth fieldwork in multiple counties, as well as engagement with policy stakeholders and partners in Africa and the UK over the whole period of the post. The project will be hosted by a new Centre for Pan-African Studies at the Department of Politics and International Studies.

The two postdoctoral researchers will be a core part of a team and will each carry out independent research programmes under the direction of the PI, involving substantial periods of fieldwork in Africa and/or the UK. Due to the multi-country and collaborative nature of the project, the postdoctoral researchers must be prepared to undertake international travel. They will be responsible for organising workshops, seminars and conferences in Africa and/or the UK. They will be expected to contribute to the design, conduct and dissemination of research, contribute to any work that increases the impact of the project, and co-lead the monitoring and evaluation of the project’s research impact.
