Gizem Arat

She earned her PhD degree from the University of Hong Kong in Social Work and Social Administration. She has been a Post-doctoral fellow at the University of Hong Kong, working on the promotion of social inclusion of ethnic minority youth.

Prior to her Ph.D. journey, she obtained her MSW from the University of Pittsburgh, in the School of Social Work. After her MSW degree, she was passionate to expand her knowledge of Eastern settings to gain a dual perspective (East and West) on social work. Her current research areas include the promotion of social justice and social harmony, positive youth development, and resilience in ethnic minority youth in Asian and global contexts. She is interested in hiking, exploring new cultures and meeting new people with diverse backgrounds.

Narine Nora Kerelian Researcher Profile

Researcher ProfilesDr. Narine Nora Kerelian is a Lecturer with the Department of Asian and Policy Studies (APS) of the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (FLASS) at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK).

Narine Kerelian

In addition to holding a PhD in Social Sciences from The University of Hong Kong, she is certified in intercultural theory and foundations. Dr. Kerelian obtained her MA in International Policy Studies from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, and her BA in Global Studies and French (Honors) from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Dr. Kerelian’s research interests lie at the intersection of migration and social policy, with a focus on global cities in Asia. Her dissertation explores the sense of place of young transmigrant professionals in Hong Kong through transmigrant lived experience accounts, providing insights for talent mobility, migrant incorporation, and global city formation.

Dr. Kerelian has studied, worked and lived in the United States, Europe, and Asia. She has traveled to over 35 countries and enjoys seeing new places and trying new cuisines. She is fluent in Armenian, English and French.

Jane Jackson Researcher Profile

Researcher ProfilesJane Jackson (PhD, OISE/University of Toronto) is professor in the English Department at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), where she teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses in intercultural communication.

Jane JacksonShe also supervises postgraduate research in language and intercultural communication; identity; student and academic mobility; international and intercultural education; intercultural competence; autonomous learning; English as a second language education; informal language learning; and intercultural transitions.

Professor Jackson has teaching and research experience in many countries/regions: Canada, the USA, the Sultanate of Oman, Egypt, Mainland China, the U.K., and Hong Kong SAR. Recognized for innovative teaching practices, she is the recipient of CUHK’s 2013 Education Award and a member of the University’s Teaching Excellence Ambassador Program, which promotes effective teaching and learning.

Her research interests include intercultural communication/education, language and identity, multiculturalism/multilingualism, and education abroad. With the support of competitive research grants, Professor Jackson has been investigating the ‘whole person development’ of international exchange students from Greater China as well as the language and intercultural learning of incoming international students in Asia. Teaching Development grants have enabled her to design and offer research-inspired blended and fully online courses that aim to promote intercultural competence and optimize education abroad learning. Professor Jackson is a frequent speaker at international conferences that center on intercultural learning, teaching, and research. She has published widely in academic journals and has many chapters in edited collections. Recent books include Introducing Language and Intercultural Communication (Routledge, 2014), The Routledge Handbook of Language and Intercultural Communication (Routledge, 2012) (editor), Intercultural Journeys: From Study to Residence Abroad (Palgrave MacMillan, 2010), and Language, Identity, and Study Abroad: Sociocultural Perspectives (Equinox, 2008).

She is an elected fellow and Board member of the International Academy for Intercultural Research (IAIR) and a member of the International Association for Languages and Intercultural Communication (IALIC). She also serves on the editorial board of the International Encyclopedia of Intercultural Communication (Wiley-Blackwell) and is a member of the advisory board of the Language and Intercultural Communication journal. Professor Jackson is an Editorial Board member for Study Abroad Research in Second Language Acquisition and International Education and the International Journal of Bias, Identity and Diversities in Education.

Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies
The Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies is one of the constituent departments of the Faculty of Humanities. One of the missions of the Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies is to promote and develop studies of Chinese in multilingual contexts and studies of multilingualism in Chinese contexts. It has built a reputation in Applied Chinese Language Studies, and seeks to extend its strength in areas like Bilingualism (including Translation and Interpreting), Cross-Cultural Communication and East Asian Studies. Another mission of the Department is to offer profession-based programmes that meet the career aspirations of young adults in Hong Kong and Greater China. It offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree programmes in Bilingual Corporate Communication, Chinese Linguistics, Chinese Language Teaching, Speech Therapy, Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, Translating and Interpreting. Research Assistant Professor in Chinese Linguistics
The appointee will be required to (a) engage in teaching and related learning activities at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels; (b) take an important role in curriculum design and development; (c) undertake research in his/her area of expertise, including but not limited to application for external research grants and participation in research projects; and (d) provide administrative support for academic and departmental affairs, and play an active role in programme management for further development of the Department’s objectives.

Applicants should have (a) a PhD degree in a relevant discipline, preferably with the specialism in Chinese Syntax, Semantics, Psycholinguistics, Sociolinguistics or Cantonese Linguistics; (b) a good record of relevant academic and/or professional achievements; (c) the relevant research experience (as supported by evidence of research projects and outputs).  Experience of postdoctoral research positions will be a plus but not required; (d) fluency in English; and (e) a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, scholarly activities and professional service.

Remuneration and Conditions of Service
The remuneration package for the Research Assistant Professor post is the same as an Assistant Professor post.  A highly competitive remuneration package will be offered.  Appointment will be on fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract for up to three years.  Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement.  Applicants should state their current and expected salary in the application.

Call for Papers: 12th Annual Conference of the International Association for Languages and Intercultural Communication
Language and Intercultural Communication in the Workplace: Critical Approaches to Theory and Practice

Conference overview:
From language classrooms to outdoor markets, the workplace is fundamental to socialisation. The workplace is not only a site of employment where, for example, money is made and institutional roles are enacted through various forms of discourse; it is also a location where interactants engage in social actions and practices, from befriending or bullying a colleague to complimenting or gossiping about the boss. In other words, the workplace possesses cultural and linguistic norms and conventions for engaging in work and non-work related activities.

Recently, the workplace has begun to attract the attention of scholars because of advances in communication technology, cheaper and greater options for travel, and global migration and immigration. Work is no longer confined to a single space. It now requires people to travel over great geographical distances, communicate with cultural ‘others’ located in different time zones, relocate to different regions or countries, and conduct business in online settings. The workplace is thus changing and evolving, creating new and emerging communicative contexts. Intercultural communication researchers have a long tradition of investigating the language and communication of such activities.

The aim of the conference is to promote greater understanding of workplace cultures, particularly the ways in which working in highly interconnected and multicultural societies shape language and intercultural communication. The conference aims to encourage greater dialogue between researchers studying workplace issues with different theoretical and methodological frameworks, and between researchers and practitioners. Abstracts are welcome in any area related to the workplace, including pedagogical settings. The conference focuses on critical approaches to theory and practice, and we are particularly interested in studies that use practice to shape theory, and studies that question the validity and universality of existing models. Many Asian scholars, for example, have criticised some of the predominant models in intercultural communication for being Eurocentric/Anglocentric, and the conference welcomes papers proposing alternative frameworks for analysing intercultural communication in the workplace.
