CFP Immigrants and meanings of work

CALL FOR EXTENDED ABSTRACTS
Immigrants and Meanings of Work: A Global Perspective (Working Title)

Editors
Suchitra Shenoy-Packer, DePaul University
Elena Gabor, Bradley University

Extended abstract submission deadline: October 15, 2013

We would like to invite you to contribute, help shape, and develop an important area of scholarship – Meanings of work from immigrants’ perspectives.

If you are an immigrant yourself and/or you have conducted research with immigrants within the intersections of race, class, gender, immigration status (or others), and work, we are interested in chapters that reveal how you or other immigrants construct the meaning of work in your/their lives. We take a deliberate interdisciplinary focus in order to be inclusive of theoretical perspectives. However, because we are interested in the subjective experiential realities of diverse groups of immigrants working in different parts of the world, we prefer interpretive, critical-cultural works that include immigrants’ voices (either as quotes or as first person narratives) as primary sources of research investigations.

Potential Topics:
We are open to a variety of innovative topics pertaining to Immigrants and Meanings of Work. Here are some examples:
* Immigrant first-person accounts of their work experience explained in the context of academic perspectives of meanings of work/meaningful work
* Religious ethos that influence meanings of work (and that carry over into the immigrant’s adopted culture)/i.e., A Buddhist immigrant’s views of work that influence her work experiences and meaning-making in an adopted Catholic country.
* Immigrant work ethic/work ethic in transition
* Socialization/adaptation dissonance between what was taught (e.g., values) in one’s native country vis-à-vis what is experienced (the “reality”) in the adopted country
* Social construction of immigrant work identity
* Pan-cultural/culturally universal work values

Please submit an extended abstract between 600-800 words (excluding references) to Suchitra at sshenoy1 AT depaul.edu and Elena at egabor AT bradley.edu by October 15, 2013. Questions may be directed at either or both.

CID Welcomes the New Assistant to the Director

CID has recently welcomed Minh Cao, a graduate student in Communication at Villanova University, as the Assistant to the Director of the Center. Minh is currently in the second year of her academic program, working on her Master’s dissertation while assisting the Director with website content management. She is excited to be part of the project, especially when her personal and academic backgrounds show great connections to the work of the Center.

Minh grew up in Hanoi, Vietnam, where she spent 18 years before embarking on her academic journeys in the U.S. Having vastly enjoyed her conversation with one of the Villanova’s ambassadors who was at a college fair in Vietnam, Minh decided to pursue her undergraduate degree at Villanova University. She chose Global Interdisciplinary Studies (GIS) as her major, the name of which often causes inquiring looks from others. One can simply understand GIS as the studies of a perspective that embodies interrelating disciplines in regarding, comprehending and accessing global matters. GIS has, in many ways, complimented Minh’s academic endeavor in Communication, as the latter turns out to have much of the same nature as her previous degree.

Minh looks forward to contributing to CID and hopes that she can provide additional help in fostering the mission of the Center.

Cultural diplomacy – Indian Council for Cultural Relations

Cultural diplomacy all about blending cultures: ICCR DG

Dhrupad music incorporated into a choreographed Mohiniyattam work, a tandem of classical ballet, Kathak and Flamenco or even sharing of stage space by Qawali troupes from Pakistan, Turkey, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. Sounds unique?

Well, that’s the new definition of ‘cultural diplomacy’ according to Suresh K Goel, Director General, Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).

“It is not mandatory that the audience in India will only enjoy classical art forms or the new generation will only enjoy contemporary forms, we need to experiment, exchange and then enjoy,” Goel told the Press Trust of India in an interview.

The ICCR, he says, is undertaking efforts to ensure that various art forms in India reach audiences worldwide while people within India get opportunities to witness and enjoy the different art forms across the world.

“The latest programme we conducted was a unique musical arrangement with Los Angeles-based Grammy nominee Donna Summer who has also created music for Whitney Houston,” says Goel.

Another recent programme by the cultural body featured work by musician Mac Quayle who seamlessly brought together a unique blend of world music with Kerala rhythms, Dhrupad and Rabindra sangeet.

“This was perhaps for the first time Dhrupad has been incorporated into a Mohiniyattam choreographic work. So that’s how we blend different art forms and hence different cultures,” Goel elaborates.

ICCR does not just aim to facilitate or ensure Indian cultural penetration into other countries but also aims to create a dialogue and hence facilitate exchange of cultures.
