Euro-Med Dialogue Award 2013

The Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation for Dialogue between Cultures (ALF) and Fondazione Mediterraneo (FM) are launching the Eighth edition of the Euro-Mediterranean Award for Dialogue between Cultures, an annual prize which recognizes the achievements of individuals and organisation working for the promotion of intercultural dialogue. This year’s theme is ”Migrants as Ambassadors for Mutual Understanding”.

The Anna Lindh Foundation invites all its network members in the 42 countries across the Euro-Med Region to nominate the best candidates for this year’s award which will bestow organisation(s) or individual enhancing dialogue involving migrants as main target group and actors for mutual understanding, taking into account the multiple facets and the interactions existing between development, democracy, diversity and dialogue. The deadline for nomination is 10 September 2013.

The selection of the winner of the Euro-Med Award is a participatory process which involves the Heads of the Networks and the members alike. The Anna Lindh Foundation for Inter-Cultural Dialogue promotes knowledge, mutual respect and inter-cultural dialogue between the people of the Euro-Mediterranean region, working through a network of more than 3,000 civil society organisations in 43 countries. Its budget is co-funded by the EU (7 million euros) and the EU member states (6 million euro).

The Department of Communication at the University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for two tenure-track Assistant Professor positions to begin September 1, 2014, with responsibilities for teaching and supervision at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The John Gardner Center in the Graduate School of Education at Stanford University seeks a Qualitative Research Associate to be responsible for conducting qualitative research with an emphasis on policy-relevant and actionable topic areas.

Qualifications:
A doctorate (or equivalent) in a relevant field (education, public policy, sociology, anthropology, psychology, or related field) is required as is capacity to oversee graduate students as they design, carry out, and write about their research projects. Experience with qualitative data collection and analysis is required. Demonstrated experience with designing qualitative studies is required, as is proficiency with data analysis software such as NVIVO. Excellent oral, analytic, organizational, and interpersonal skills are required; writing as demonstrated in the candidate’s own writing and publications is essential. Ability to write for multiple audiences, including policy makers and practitioners, is preferred. The candidate must have strong interpersonal and collaboration skills in working with researchers and practitioners as well as organizational skills that demonstrate her/his ability to handle multiple tasks, timelines and priorities in a team environment. Familiarity with California K-12 education context, and English language learners is preferred. Andrew W. Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellowships in the Humanities, 2014-2016

The Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities (IPRH) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, supported by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, seeks to hire two Post-Doctoral Fellows for two-year appointments starting in Fall 2014.

The Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellows in the Humanities will spend the two-year term in residence at Illinois, will conduct research on the proposed project, and will teach two courses per year in the appropriate academic department. The Fellows will also participate in activities related to their research at the IPRH, in the teaching department, and on the Illinois campus. Each Post-Doctoral Fellow will give a public lecture on his or her research.

The search for Mellon Fellows is open to scholars in all humanities disciplines, but we seek applicants whose work falls into one of the following broad subject areas:

*       Empire and Colonial Studies
*       Memory Studies

E.MA Programme Director for the academic year 2013/2014

The European Inter-University Centre for Human Rights and Democratisation (EIUC) is seeking a qualified individual for the position of E.MA [European Master’s Programme in Human Rights and Democratisation] Programme Director for the academic year 2013/2014.

The position, which is being posted at the level of university professor or senior researcher, involves a combination of teaching, organisation, and various academic and practical responsibilities connected with the E.MA programme.

Working under the instructions of the E.MA and EIUC governing bodies and in cooperation with the EIUC Secretary General, the candidate selected will assume primary responsibility for the academic coordination of the E.MA programme a.y. 2013/2014. He or she will furthermore be involved in the development of new academic and research-based activities in the context of the EIUC.

Functions and tasks
The E.MA Programme Director will work as member of the permanent EIUC staff, based in Venice-Lido. Tasks will include the following:

*To oversee in the daily management of the E.MA programme – including the first semester field trip, which in recent years has been going to Kosovo – with a view to maintaining the excellent standards and academic coherence of the first semester courses;

*To supervise and coordinate E.MA Fellows in the performance of their tasks;
*To organise and teach seminars introducing one of the core disciplines (law, political science, international relations) of the E.MA programme;
*To set up and lead working groups and workshops incorporated in the academic programme;
*To oversee the assessment of student assignments;
*To exercise a proactive role in identifying and rectifying problems of an academic nature;
*To take a proactive role in the development of additional academic activities in the context of the EIUC; this may include initiating and facilitating research collaboration, academic publication, and the organisation of training courses, seminars and conferences.

Qualifications:
Doctorate in a relevant discipline (e.g. law, political science, international relations), teaching experience, good publication record, team-working ability, administrative experience. Excellent knowledge of English; proficiency in French. The selected candidate will be expected to take up the position no later than beginning of September 2013. Salary negotiable, depending on qualifications.

I REMEMBER…. NCA Centennial Video Project

The National Communication Association (NCA), with 8,000 members is the largest communication association worldwide representing communication professors, students and professionals.  NCA is 100 years old in 2014 and Communication students, classes, or student organizations are invited to submit a proposal to record memories of past NCA conventions at the 2013 NCA Convention in Washington DC and produce a video for display at the 2104 Centennial NCA in Chicago, IL.  Applications are due by September 2, 2013.

Project specifications:  Individual interviews are to be conducted by “roving” videographers at the 2013 NCA Convention in Washington, DC, screened for appropriate content, representation of diversity and edited into a looping video that may be displayed at the 2014 Centennial NCA Convention in Chicago, IL pending approval by the NCA Centennial Planning Committee.  Videographers will also be responsible for collecting informed consent signatures at the time of the interview.  The video should capture a diversity of voices and memories including but not limited to: “What was your most memorable experience at an NCA convention? What experience at an NCA convention/conference had the most impact on your career development? What would you tell a junior colleague about your experiences in NCA?”  The planners will work with the students and NCA National Office to find a prime location from which to record interviews.

Eligibility:  Applicants must 1) be current communication undergraduate or graduate students who have a knowledge of video production, 2) have access to appropriate recording and editing equipment that you can bring with you, 3) have at least two members of the team in attendance at the 2013, November 21-24 National Communication Association Conference in Washington DC, 4) complete an approximately 30 minute edited, video by March 30, 2014, and 5) have a faculty sponsor to oversee the project at the convention and in post-production.

Compensation:  Reimbursement for editing and production costs, travel, hotel accommodations, and student registration for up to four students for the 2013 NCA Convention not to exceed a total of $5,000.

In the last two decades, Nollywood, Nigeria’s movie and video industry, has undergone significant transformation, from a primarily home-video production and distribution system for local consumption to a sophisticated, internationally competitive entertainment industry with worldwide recognition. Its storytelling captures the experience, aspirations, and struggles of Africa and the African diaspora. This volume seeks to examine the impact and culture of Nollywood, as well as the local and global forces that influence its emergence and growth. The work will be published as part of the University Press of America’s Communication, Society and Change in Africa series. We invite chapter contributions that will examine various aspects of Nollywood such as, but not limited to, the following:

China International/Intercultural Communication Annual 2013

For Greater China (including Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau, Taiwan, as well as overseas Chinese and elsewhere), working within the scope of the relevant international / intercultural communication research group, construction of the academic publishing field, comprehensive reflection of international / intercultural communication research topics, and frontiers of the latest research results, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences has developed the innovative project “Intercultural Communication in the Age of Globalization: Academic Research and Application of Achievements.” Specifically, we plan to launch the China International / Intercultural Communication  Annual, in order to publish research on international / intercultural communication each year. The annual will be published each October starting in 2014.

We hope this annual will be an important summit from which to review the past and plan the future. We welcome all scholars who are interested in international / intercultural communication research to submit papers. Religious ‘Others,’ Schooling, and the Negotiation of Civic Identities

Interdisciplinary Symposium

The symposium will explore the relationship between hegemonic discourses of citizenship, religio-cultural belonging, and the negotiation of civic identities among religio-cultural minority youths in educational settings. The question of how non-dominant youths negotiate their civic identities as citizens in light of their coexisting religio-cultural identities has been at the center of a heated debate in many modern societies. The ongoing public concern about the resurgence of the religious  – and here especially the religious ‘other’ – in the public sphere has led to the emergence of a public debate over how to handle the ‘religious’ in the institutions, civic society, and public sphere of ‘postsecular’ society. The symposium will explore how societal master narratives about secularity, religion/ the religious ‘other,’ and citizenship are instantiated in the everyday practices of schools and classrooms, and how students from religious minority groups in turn come to navigate their identities as citizens.

These questions will be theorized and explored empirically in presentations and discussion workshops focused on 1) the macro-level of hegemonic formations of citizenship and belonging that characterizes classrooms across a variety of settings, with particular attention to the role of the religious ‘other’ in these formations, 2) the micro-level of everyday practices through which these formations are enacted in curricula and in the classroom, 3) the personal experience of moments of inclusion, exclusion, and silencing, and 4) the policy level of ongoing transformations and mutual openings that allow for the construction of a shared civic identity among youths as future citizens.

Researchers from a range of disciplines, including, but not limited to, education, anthropology, religious studies, philosophy, linguistics, sociology, and political science, are invited to participate.

The University of Pennsylvania‘s Annenberg School for Communication is seeking to fill a tenured or tenure track faculty position (open rank) in “digital culture” to begin fall semester 2014.  Preference will be given to early and mid-career scholars whose research and teaching contribute to field, interpretive, and/or critical approaches to the study of culture and its intersection with digital media such as the internet, social media, mobile media, virtual reality, online games, user-generated sites, and/or location-aware media.
