Universities around the world have begun to participate in the higher education internationalization process in diverse ways, including expanded recruitment of international students, study-abroad programs, dual/joint degrees, and the development of international branch campuses. In the United states, student mobility will more than double from three to more than seven million annually from 2000 to 2025 (Banks et al. 2007; Haddad 2006). Given this trend of globalization and its resulting internationalization of our campuses, it is a timely mandate that we review the current trends in the Communication curriculum and modify it appropriately to adjust to the new global environment.

The goal of this book, therefore, is to facilitate internationalization of the communication discipline in an era of globalization. Section 1 of the book discusses the theoretical perspectives of globalism, internationalization, and the current state of the Communication discipline and curriculum. Section 2 offers a comprehensive understanding of the role, ways, and impact of internationalizing teaching, learning, and research in diverse areas of study in Communication, including travel programs and initiatives to bring internationalization to the classroom. The pieces in this section will include research-based articles, case studies, analytical reviews that examine key questions about the field, and themed pieces for dialogue/debate on current and future teaching and learning issues related to internationalizing the Communication discipline/curriculum. Section 3 provides an extensive sampling of materials and resources for immediate use in internationalization in communication studies; sample syllabi, activities, examples, and readings will be included. In sum, our book is designed to enable communication curriculum and communication courses in other disciplines to be internationalized and to offer different approaches to enable faculty, students, and administrators to incorporate and experience an internationalized curriculum regardless of time and financial limitations.

This Special Issue of The Journal of Intercultural Communication Research (JICR) invites papers that advance internationalization of the communicaton curriculum and/or global education experiences through the application and integration of communication theory and research.  The goal is to disseminate instructional approaches, ideas, and activities that bring a global perspective to the communication curricuum, and to generate an on-going discussion about the pedagogy of internationalization for intercultural competence in an era of globalization.

According to the International Association of Universities, an increasing interdependence among nations as well as intensified mobility of goods, ideas and people has had the effect of making internationalization more of an institutional imperative .  Responding to this mandate, universities around the world have begun to participate in the higher education internationalization process in diverse ways, including expanded recruitment of international students, study-abroad programs, dual/joint degrees, and the development of international branch campuses.  In the United States, international students will more than double from three to over seven million annually from 2000 to 2025 (Banks et al. 2007; Haddad 2006).  Conversely, the United States and other nations recently have experienced a surge in nationalism that will challenge internationalization efforts by universities and faculty (e.g., Brexit, US/Mexico Border Wall) in all disciplines.

Given the trend towards globalization and its resulting internationalization of our campuses, it is timely to: 1) review the current limitations of the communication curriculum and revise it appropriately to adjust to the new global environment, and 2) integrate the knowledge and skills of the communication discipline with other curriculum to support the development of global citizens in all countries.

For this special issue we seek articles and teaching cases that reconceptualize communication curriculum (macro, meso, or micro levels) and/or ground global education experiences in communication theory and research.  We seek projects that accomplish one of the following:
–       internationalize assignments, courses or sub disciplines in communication (e.g., interpersonal communication, organizational communication).
–       bring communication theory or research to other disciplines to advance internationalization efforts (e.g., intercultural communication and history)
–       Integrate communication theory or research into a study-abroad experience
–       Integrate communication theory or research into domestic, global educational experiences.

Manuscripts may have one of two foci.  The first is a review and application of communication theory and literature to a curriculum or subject area in or outside of the communication discipline to support internationalization (3,500 – 4,000 words).  The second is a detailed presentation of pedagogical activities that demonstrate a use of communication theory or literature that brings a global perspective to a class, unit activity, or semester activity (2,000 – 3,000 words). All manuscripts must demonstrate a substantive connection to communication theory and research while articulating a clear pedagogical practice and impact on social or curriculum goals.

Abstracts of 250 – 300 words should be submitted by July 1, 2017 to Esther Yook.  Selected authors will receive an invitation to submit full manuscripts for consideration by August 1, 2017.   Completed manuscripts are due November 1, 2017.  Contact co-guest editor Paaige K. CFP I remember NCA…

I REMEMBER…. NCA Centennial Video Project

The National Communication Association (NCA), with 8,000 members is the largest communication association worldwide representing communication professors, students and professionals.  NCA is 100 years old in 2014 and Communication students, classes, or student organizations are invited to submit a proposal to record memories of past NCA conventions at the 2013 NCA Convention in Washington DC and produce a video for display at the 2104 Centennial NCA in Chicago, IL.  Applications are due by September 2, 2013.

Project specifications:  Individual interviews are to be conducted by “roving” videographers at the 2013 NCA Convention in Washington, DC, screened for appropriate content, representation of diversity and edited into a looping video that may be displayed at the 2014 Centennial NCA Convention in Chicago, IL pending approval by the NCA Centennial Planning Committee.  Videographers will also be responsible for collecting informed consent signatures at the time of the interview.  The video should capture a diversity of voices and memories including but not limited to: “What was your most memorable experience at an NCA convention? What experience at an NCA convention/conference had the most impact on your career development? What would you tell a junior colleague about your experiences in NCA?”  The planners will work with the students and NCA National Office to find a prime location from which to record interviews.

Eligibility:  Applicants must 1) be current communication undergraduate or graduate students who have a knowledge of video production, 2) have access to appropriate recording and editing equipment that you can bring with you, 3) have at least two members of the team in attendance at the 2013, November 21-24 National Communication Association Conference in Washington DC, 4) complete an approximately 30 minute edited, video by March 30, 2014, and 5) have a faculty sponsor to oversee the project at the convention and in post-production.

Compensation:  Reimbursement for editing and production costs, travel, hotel accommodations, and student registration for up to four students for the 2013 NCA Convention not to exceed a total of $5,000.
