The Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages is a young and vibrant Department established in 2004, devoted to the study of language and mind, with strengths in theoretical linguistics, language acquisition, bilingualism, sign linguistics and language disorders. We are seeking a linguist who has expertise in bilingualism and second language acquisition. The appointment will be at the rank of Research Assistant Professor. The Department is particularly interested in applicants whose research has a strong grounding in linguistic theory and who employ conventional and/or contemporary research methods to address core issues in linguistics. Applicants whose research crosses multiple areas of linguistics and cognate areas are especially welcomed.

The normal course load is six courses per year (36-38 ECTS annually). Consistent with the mission of the University, applicants must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in both teaching and scholarship, have an active research agenda, and contribute to the Academic Travel program, a fundamental part of Franklin’s international, interdisciplinary, intercultural curriculum. Ideally, candidates will be conversant in one of the official languages of Switzerland, have an international outlook, and demonstrate an interest in collaborating across disciplines. Practical experience in industry or corporate governance is preferred.

Social media and the internet have opened up new forms of empowerment and oppression that may particularly affect the lives of the marginalized. Marginality, as they are defining it, following Gatzweiler and Baumüller (2013), can be understood as the experience of disadvantaged (typically involuntarily) people or groups who are excluded from the resources and opportunities they need to participate as full and equal members of society. Marginality influences what people can achieve and limits their abilities to take advantage of the resources and opportunities afforded to non-marginalized peers. Further, marginalized individuals and groups are often politically, economically, and/or socially vulnerable, as their susceptibility to harm is greater, often due to to their exclusion from critical resources.
They seek submissions relating to social media and marginalization, broadly construed.

EUROLAB – Gateway to Research Stays at GESIS is pleased to invite applications for one-month research stays. Individual researchers who want to work on data available at GESIS may apply for support to access EUROLAB for a period of one month from April to June 2019.

Successful applicants will receive a travel grant that covers travel costs (economy class, up to 500 euros for short-haul flights and up to 900 euros for long-haul ones) and accommodation.

During their stay, visiting researchers will profit from a wide range of services including an individual workspace, access to data and to GESIS library with various online databases, as well as direct contact to GESIS experts.

FulbrightsI am writing a chapter entitled “The Value of a Fulbright: Internationalizing Education One Person at a Time” for inclusion in the volume Internationalizing the Communication Curriculum in an Age of Globalization: Why, What, and How, to be edited by Paaige K. Turner, Soumia Bardhan, Tracey Quigley Holden, and Eddah Mbula Mutua, to be published by Routledge.

There are already 16 stories about Fulbrights posted to this website, but I am now asking these scholars, as well as anyone else who has held any of the various types of Fulbrights, to email me, so that I can include your story in this overview. (In addition, I would like to add more personal narratives about Fulbright experiences to this website, so if you have not yet told me about your experience, let’s talk.) The specific focus in my chapter will be on what happened after you returned to your home campus: how did you revise your own courses or influence others in your department in ways that helped to internationalize the curriculum?
