Migration Policy Institute: Editor/Communications Officer (USA)

1. Communications Officer, Deadline: March 22, 2020.

MPI seeks a highly motivated Communications Officer to join its dynamic team in Washington, DC to help extend the organization’s visibility, reach, and impact. The successful candidate will play a significant role in developing the marketing content and strategies the Institute uses to disseminate its research and data, and helping shape its broader external relations, including identification of target audiences and effective engagement. As a core member of a high-functioning, fast-paced communications team, the officer’s duties will include digital content creation and strategy; media relations and writing of press releases and other short-form materials; outreach to new audiences; editing; and assisting in the promotion of MPI’s public and private events, conferences, and webinars. While assignments will vary day to day, the successful candidate must be a creative, detail-oriented, quick, versatile professional who can prioritize between quick turnaround projects and longer-term deliverables, working collaboratively with colleagues across the Institute yet able to operate independently as well.

2. Editor, Migration Information Source. Deadline: March 6, 2020.

MPI also seeks a highly motivated, exceptionally creative, and deadline-oriented editor and writer to become Editor of the Migration Information Source, an internationally recognized online journal. The Source is a unique publication that melds the best features of migration scholarship and policy/data analysis in ways that are newsy and accessible for readers who are interested in migration but not necessarily specialists.

The Editor will be responsible for all facets of production of the Source, which publishes articles online and promotes them via a bimonthly e-newsletter. The successful candidate will be able to craft and implement a strong editorial vision for the Source, identifying topics and cultivating authors who can best tell some of the most interesting and important developments in migration research, policy, and trends around the world. He or she will demonstrate superb editing skills (organizational, copy-editing, and fact checking), with a strong aptitude for translating academic- or policy-focused research for general-interest audiences; and will have demonstrated marketing and social media skills to promote the Source and its work in innovative and effective ways.The Editor will be based in Washington, DC, and will report to MPI’s Director of Communications.

Postdoc: Intercultural Danish-German Communication (Denmark)

PostdocsPostdoc in Intercultural Danish-German Communication, Department of German and Romance Languages, University of Aarhus, Denmark. Deadline: 31 March 2020.

For the position, funded by an Aarhus University Research Foundation starting grant, the department is seeking an applicant who will contribute to the research in the project “Intercultural Danish-German communication”, in close cooperation with the Interreg 5A project kultKIT. The successful applicant will carry out research on Danish-German intercultural communication in close collaboration with principal investigator Erla Hallsteinsdóttir. The successful applicant must be prepared to participate in and contribute to the research activities (data collection and analysis as well as publication and dissemination activities) as they are defined in the project application.

The focus of the research will be on aspects that are fundamental to intercultural understanding in international strategic communication in a broad sense, with special focus on aspects of intercultural understanding, intercultural competences or linguistic aspects of interculturality. The project is linked to the research programme Communication in International Business and the Professions at the School of Communication and Culture.

The postdoctoral researcher is expected to have a background in intercultural communication. We are particularly interested in applicants with both research expertise and practical experience in communication in a Danish-German context.

Successful candidates must have a PhD in Cultural Studies, Media and Communications Studies, Sociology, Anthropology, Computational Communication, Design Informatics, or closely related discipline by date of appointment; evidence of excellence in teaching. Consideration may also be given to candidates with practice-based and industry experience in related sectors.

Innovative Visual Presentation of Research Results: REMINDER

Applied ICDREMINDER, a multidisciplinary project carried out by 14 universities and research institutions around Europe, led by the University of Oxford, has worked with Soapbox to develop an innovative non-linear presentation of the team’s results.

The REMINDER [Role of European Mobility and its Impacts in Narratives, Debates and European Union Reforms] project was “a large-scale attempt to address the full spectrum of social and economic consequences of migration within the European Union and how this phenomenon is reflected in media, policy and public opinion around Europe.” The project addressed five major themes: numbers, impacts, media, attitudes, and  governance. The team decided all of these connected and influenced one another in a range of different and complicated ways, which is why they worked so hard to develop a way to show the overlaps. Both the results and the method are worth learning about.

Koç U Summer School: Research Methods & Ethics in Migration Studies (Turkey)

The 10th MiReKoc International Summer School will be held in collaboration with IMISCOE. The program reflects the importance of methodological debates. This year’s Summer School includes two weeks of lectures, lab sessions and discussion sessions led by a distinguished international faculty members and experts in the field, exploring different themes focusing on both qualitative and quantitative methods including ethnography, participatory methods, urban mapping, network analysis, big data, visual methods and social media methodologies as well as ethics in migration research to offer a space for scholars and participants to reflect on methodological challenges and opportunities.

MiReKoc International Summer School program is designed for graduate students and PhD candidates, early career researchers, policy analysts, NGO and international organization practitioners, as well as junior experts in the field. The language of the Summer School is English.  MiReKoc International Summer School does not only offer expanding the knowledge of its participants, but also promises networking opportunities between them and distinguished faculty to enhance both parties’ research agendas. Applications from all over the world are encouraged.

The field of applied linguistics is concerned with “real world problems”. In order to truly engage with the real world it is essential to recognize systemic inequities and their relationships with language(s). This special issue will consider the range of interdisciplinary theoretical and methodological approaches that applied linguists have utilized in collaboration with academics, practitioners, and varied communities to address social (in)justices. Such work involves working collaboratively to ensure that social institutions are inclusive of everyone’s needs and wants, which means full and equal participation, equitable distribution of resources, access to opportunities, a recognition of the histories of oppression, and consciousness-raising for resistance.

CFP Crossroads of Languages & Cultures (Cyprus)

ConferencesCall for papers: 6th International Conference ‘Crossroads of Languages and Cultures’ (CLC6): Plurilingualism, Variation, Spaces of Literacy, University of Cyprus, October 23-25, 2020. Deadline: March 15, 2020.

The main theme of CLC6 is the charting of the relationship between plurilingualism, linguistic variation, hybrid linguistic performances and alternative literacies. The hybridity and superdiversity of the contemporary linguistic landscape has been long acknowledged. Do language pedagogies treat language as a complex semiotic resource? Do such pedagogies forge links between pluri- or multilingualism, linguistic variation, translanguaging and alternative literacy practices within and outside of the school context? Do such extant models ultimately debunk dominant literacy policies and practices?

Τhe languages of the conference are English and Greek.

University of Louisiana Monroe seeks applications for a full-time, tenure-track, 9-month, Assistant Professor in Communication with a strong understanding of the Communication discipline, and the ability to teach across concentrations to begin August 2020. Candidates will teach in the Advocacy concentration primarily and should have specializations in intercultural communication and performance studies. Position requires teaching four classes per semester, both undergraduate and graduate level, including courses such as Intercultural Communication, Communication and Conflict, Performance Advocacy, Qualitative Methods, and a rotation of service courses (Interpersonal, Fundamentals, Public Speaking, and Small Group Communication), providing service to the institution, and engaging in scholarly and/or creative work.
