U of Michigan: Anti-Racist Digital Urban Humanities (USA)

The University of Michigan Digital Studies Institute and the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning invite applications for a joint (50/50) open rank tenure-track appointment from colleagues conducting leading-edge creative practice and research in anti-racist design and digital culture to begin August 28, 2023. This position is part of a Provost’s Anti-Racist Hiring Initiative led by Taubman College in collaboration with the Department of African and African American Studies and the Digital Studies Initiative and will benefit from a well-established and university-supported anti-racism research infrastructure. Focus areas might include: Digital space, place, and racial identity, i.e. “thick mapping”; carceral digital studies, space, power, and racialized populations; digital storytelling that centers anti-racist approaches to urban space; urban design research, big data, critical speculative approaches, racial inclusion; critical digital studies, spatial justice, urban community-based racial justice research Intersections between structural racism, digital methodologies, Detroit and other “shrinking” cities.

The Communications Department at Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications is offering a full-time, tenured position at the associate or full professor rank beginning in fall 2023. They seek a multidisciplinary scholar who has a significant, established track record of published research, extramural grant acquisition, and thought leadership in the area of Media and Diversity Issues, broadly defined. This recruitment is part of an ambitious Invest Syracuse Cluster Hire Initiative in the broad area of Social Difference/Social Justice. The Graduate School of Education (GSE) was launched in 2013 with partners at the University of Cambridge and the University of Pennsylvania. Due to expansion, GSE invites applications for Full Professors, Associate Professors and Assistant Professors for faculty positions in the areas of Inclusive Education and Multilingual Education beginning in January / August, 2023.

The successful candidates will be expected to teach postgraduate courses in the M.Sc. in Educational Leadership program (one of 4 specializations: Inclusive Education; Multilingual Education; Higher Education; and School Education), the M.A. in Multilingual Education program, and/or the PhD in Education program. Global Advocacy and Grant Coordinator, Anti Racist Public Education, ActionAid, to be based in Johannesburg, London, Nairobi or Rio de Janeiro. Deadline: 3 November 2022.

This role will support the development of ambitious progress on anti-racist public education globally, working in close dialogue with a transformative programme in Brazil. You will lead global advocacy on anti-racist public education, connecting with and drawing learning from around the world to influence global policies and practices. This will include engaging with UN Special Rapporteurs, with UNESCO’s Global Education Monitoring Report, and with processes to influence the post-2030 SDG agenda to make issues around racial equity in education a global priority. You will work in close partnership with the School of Education at the University of Bristol who are developing a database of anti-racist education initiatives and a roadmap for transformation. You will also connect closely with wider movements such as the Global Campaign for Education, Education International and the Global Student Forum.

Most importantly you will be connecting with the hugely ambitious transformative work of the SETA project in Brazil, which is working with black, indigenous and quilombo movements, together with the national education campaign, towards a shared vision of a Brazilian public education system built on the principles of racial and social justice where every young person can access their right to quality education. The team in Brazil aims to transform the public education ecosystem in Brazil and to institutionalise a racial equity approach in policy and practice, influencing wider societal attitudes, transforming data and monitoring, shifting government policies and practices, training managers and teachers and mobilising youth and students.

The ideal candidate will have an active and creative research and teaching program that focuses on the relationship between language and struggles for social justice particularly as they occur around race, indigeneity, gender, disability, class and nationality. Also of interest in how language becomes an instrument for perpetuating systems of exclusion and inequality, and at the same time a vehicle for framing alternative visions that challenge such systems. Areas of specialization may include: language and globalization, including bilingualism and multilingualism; language and decolonization; language and migration; language and learning systems; language and media culture; multimodality; political, moral, and legal discourses related to language; and ecolinguistics (the relation between language and the environment). They are open to candidates trained in communication, relevant areas of linguistics (such as sociolinguistics) or other relevant fields.

Successful candidates will have strong methodological skills that augment the department’s interdisciplinary program and strengths in cultural and historical analysis, institutional analysis (including political economy), comparative analysis, ethnography and textual and discourse analysis, and community based participatory research.
