Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates should possess an earned PhD in Communication and a research program that intersects with our current strengths in media, interpersonal, health, or intercultural communication. Previous administrative experience at the level of chair or program director is desired. Opportunities for interdisciplinary research collaboration may exist between this position and the CLA Departments of Psychology or Sociology, McCormack Graduate School of Public Policy, and/or College of Nursing and Health Sciences, depending on areas of research expertise and interest. Department chairs are expected to teach one course per semester.

Undergraduate advising is also part of the overall teaching responsibilities.  Scholarly research productivity and service to the department, college, and university are likewise expected, since UBT is a research-intensive institution.

Qualifications:
Earned Ph.D. in the field of advertising or communication.  Should be able to demonstrate success or potential success as a modern classroom teacher and researcher – preferably with professional experience in advertising.  Expertise in teaching advertising in the new media environment is also highly desirable, since all of our classrooms are “smart.”

Available Communication courses may include those in the following areas: Communication Theory, Mass Communication, Intercultural Communication, Organizational Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Communication Technology, Advertising and Public Relations.  The position may consist of teaching from two to three courses per semester, beginning in Fall 2014. The individual(s) hired may be employed on a single-semester or a multi-semester basis.

The Professor of Practice position is a non-tenure track instructional appointment in the College of Arts & Sciences. Responsibilities include: 1) teaching four courses per academic year; 2) holding one office hour per week per course taught; 3) performing departmental and/or college service duties as needed. Teaching duties include: designing syllabi and selecting instructional materials in coordination with the Chair; leading lectures and discussions, preparing and grading examinations, mentoring students in office hours, and assigning final grades.

The successful applicants for both positions will teach Public Speaking and/or Interpersonal Communication as part of their regular load as well as other courses as the department needs, and will be encouraged to develop additional special topics courses in their area.

Candidates will demonstrate ongoing excellence in teaching/student advisement, research and service.   Voluntary summer and winter term contracts may be available. The Department of Drama and Speech Communication at the University of Waterloo invites applications for one Assistant Professor position and one Associate Professor position in Speech Communication. Based in a liberal arts faculty in a research intensive university, the Speech Communication program currently serves approximately 150 majors and offers eight different degree programs, including three and four year regular and honours programs, an Arts and Business degree plan, and a minor. The formal relationships between Speech Communication and other programs (especially Digital Arts Communication and Drama) provide regular opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations in teaching, research, and creative work.

The successful candidates will have a strong research profile as well as demonstrated teaching experience. Strong applicants for the Assistant Professor position will have a PhD in hand or be ABD with dissertation near completion.
