Increased understanding of interactions between different human groups is a major challenge of our time. A half-century of critique of the concept of culture has made significant contributions, including foregrounding ethnocentrism as a source of research bias across disciplines; incorporating power into cultural studies; and expanding scholarship on cultures beyond ethno-linguistically defined groups. Likewise, study of processes that transcend group divisions–globalization, empire, neo-colonialism–has flourished. Meanwhile, understanding mechanisms of interactions between cultures has not kept pace. Intercultural studies are due for reflection and refinement.

The Center for Intercultural Studies at Saint Louis University invites proposals for papers taking a critical approach to interculturality, and exploring the potential as well as the limits of the concept. The focus of the Conference, and the invitation for paper proposals, is specifically on innovative theoretical frameworks–preferably combining methods from more than one discipline–designed for analyzing interactions between different cultures. A paper would ideally include a specific case study illustrating the application of the analytical framework proposed. The goal is to assemble a theoretical and methodological toolbox for researching and understanding interculturality. Selected papers will be published in a volume by an academic press.

Proposals should include: a one-page abstract of the paper, with a title and name of the author; the author’s brief curriculum vitae; postal address; email address; and phone number. The Peace Education Special Interest Group of the American Educational Research Association warmly invites you to submit a proposal for the Annual General Meeting of the American Educational Research Association in San Francisco, California April 27- May 1, 2013. The theme of the conference is “Education and Poverty: Theory, Research, Policy and Praxis.”

Education has long been seen as a way out of poverty. Educational systems also perpetuate cycles of poverty and wealth. Poverty interacts with education through local, national, and international systems of financial markets and the global knowledge economy. The goal is to consider the relationships of education and poverty. The theme is conceived broadly to include the ways that education theory, research, policy, and praxis contribute to alleviating economic, intellectual and moral poverty.

The purpose of the Peace Education Special Interest Group (SIG) of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) is to create a global forum for scholars from diverse backgrounds and with varied perspectives to critically explore educational research and promote constructive changes in the areas of peace keeping, peace making, peace building, peace education, nonviolent conflict resolution, reconciliation, mediation, and more. Our work often addresses compelling, complex and politically charged topics and is informed by both sophisticated and sensitive analyses. Consequently, we welcome innovative as well as traditional theoretical and methodological approaches to research, and we encourage collaboration among members.

We welcome research papers from a very wide range of conceptual, methodological, experiential and international perspectives that represent theoretical advances; that analyze the complex social, cultural, political, historical and economical contexts within which peace education develops; that heighten individual and collective consciousness and inspire transformative practice to more effectively connect education and peace building and further the institutionalization of peace education. We encourage you to indicate in your proposal your engagement with the peace education literature and to clearly demonstrate the wider lessons that can be learned from your particular context. We particularly welcome papers that draw on interdisciplinary research data and that reflect the conference theme of education and poverty.

Call for Papers: 2012 SHNU International Conference of Intercultural Communication

With the success of the first International Conference of Intercultural Communication in 2008 and the second in 2010, Shanghai Normal University will sponsor the third on December 15-16, 2012. The 2012 ICIC focuses on “Intercultural Competence and Interaction”. It is, as the previous two, characterized by high-level scholarship, explicitly focused themes, multiple perspectives and in-depth discussions. We welcome both domestic and international scholars to interpret the conference theme from different perspectives, and would like to share their knowledge and expertise.

Ethnography of Comm conference 2012

The “Ethnography of Communication: Ways Forward” conference was held June 10-14, 2012, at Creighton University, in Omaha, Nebraska. Dr. Jay Leighter was the conference organizer, together with Dr. Donal Carbaugh; the National Communication Association sponsored the event as one of its summer conferences (along with funding from several parts of Creighton University).

I presented a paper co-authored with Dr. Patricia Lambert, of the Institut Français de l’Éducation in Lyon, entitled “A Prophet Abroad? The Impact of Hymes’ Notion of Communicative Competence in France and French-speaking Switzerland.” In addition, I was invited to participate in two roundtable discussions, one on “Ethnography of Communication Theory and Methodology: Taking Stock and Ways Forward” and the other “Ways Forward: Institutes, Centers, and Affiliations.” In the latter, I was invited to present a description of this Center, which resulted in many new “likes” to the Center’s facebook page.

Many of those participating in the conference are included in the following photo (though certainly several critical people are missing, including Dr. Gerry Philipsen and Dr. Donal Carbaugh).

One of the pleasures of the conference for me was the presence of so many of those involved in the NCA Summer Conference on Intercultural Dialogue, held in Istanbul in 2009, which led to the creation of this Center. This included several from the organizing committee (Drs. Tamar Katriel, Donal Carbaugh, Kristine Fitch Muñoz, and Saskia Witteborn), one of the guest speakers (Lisa Rudnick) and several of the participants (Drs. Todd Sandel, Chuck Braithwaite, Evelyn Ho, Eric Morgan, and Tabitha Hart). Another was catching up with Dr. Susan Poulsen, who organized “Ways of Speaking, Ways of Knowing: Ethnography of Communication” in Portland in 1992, the predecessor conference to this one in terms of topic. Other joys of the week included having time to connect with people I had not seen in a long time, previously only had met through correspondence, or students of my colleagues who I did not know at all.

Individual papers are completed papers that report original research, provide an extensive literature review or state of the art, or showcase some other form of scholarship. Information Identities: Historical Perspectives on Technological and Social Change

The Society for the History of Technology’s Special Interest Group for Computers, Information and Society (SIGCIS) welcomes submissions for a one-day scholarly workshop to be held on Sunday, October 7, 2012 in Copenhagen, Denmark.  As in previous years, SIGCIS’s annual workshop will be held at the end of the SHOT annual meeting on the day that SHOT has reserved for SIG events.

SIGCIS invites proposals that examine the relationships between computer and information technologies and changes to individual and/or group identities, such as those shared by a nation, company personnel, or members of a virtual community. Such papers might consider:
* Specific ‘information identities,’ a term that we invite scholars to interpret broadly and creatively than has been articulated in the recent or distant past
* Relationships between information technologies and political change
* The rhetoric and discourses of globalization that have been linked to information and computer technologies
* National identity and its relation to information technology
* National and transnational strategies for joining or creating an information society, a network society, an information economy, or related concepts
* Transnational and international organizations, such as IFIP, UNESCO, the European Union, or standard-setting committees.
* Ways in which particular information technologies acquired new meanings and fulfilled new roles through interaction with local practices and identities
* The emergence of new kinds of community and identity around information technologies.

SIGCIS encourages submissions along these and similar lines of inquiry, but it also maintains a proud tradition of welcoming all types of contributions related to the history of computing and information, whether or not there is an explicit connection with the annual theme.  Our membership is international and interdisciplinary, and our members examine the history of information technologies and their place within society.

Proposals for entire sessions and individual presenters are both welcome. We hope to run special sessions featuring dissertations in progress and other works in progress. The workshop is a great opportunity to get helpful feedback on your projects in a relaxed and supportive environment. All proposals will be subject to a peer review process based on abstracts.

We encourage submissions representing all areas of study that promote global awareness through a range of programs and experiences. The increasing interest in international opportunities and promotion of scholarship in this shrinking world create new challenges. We hope that this conference will provide an environment where students, staff, faculty and interested groups can highlight their efforts and provide examples of the very best practices in international education today.

There will be several formats for submission to select from:
*Full papers that are intended for publication in the Conference Proceedings. We will schedule oral summaries of approximately fifteen minutes to allow authors to highlight significant aspects of their work that may be described in more detail in the publication.
*Short papers for oral presentations of approximately fifteen minutes.
*Poster presentations, either as physical posters or as PowerPoint presentations presented in a large room format on Friday afternoon, April 13, to encourage participation, especially on the part of students. Awards will be given out for the best student presentations in this event.

Dr. Sonia Virgínia Moreira of INTERCOM—the Brazilian Society of Interdisciplinary Studies in Communication, the School of Communication at Illinois State University (Dr. John Baldwin) and the College of Communication at DePaul University (Dr. Jacqueline Taylor) invite you to submit completed papers to the 5th Brazil-U.S. Colloquium on Communication Research. The deadline for receipt of completed papers is February 1, 2012.

CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the Colloquium is to bring together Brazilian and United States researchers who work in the field of communication in order to discuss current topics in theory, method, and community engagement. More specifically, this conference aspires to foster a dynamic and intellectually stimulating dialogue between communication scholars from both countries—encouraging the participation and exchange of communication professors and students —and promoting the production of comparative analyses and joint projects related to on-going debates in communication research.

WHEN and WHERE: The biennial conference will take place at DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois, USA. Papers will be presented in English or Portuguese (translation available as necessary). The conference will be August 7-8, 2012.

CONFERENCE TOPIC: The central conference theme is Communication and Community Engagement. Following are some suggested thematic areas:
1.   Communication Research and Community Engagement: Linking theory and research to community efforts, growth and change.  (Engagamento social da comunicação e a pesquisa)
2.   Media Literacy and Critical Inquiry: Providing critical tools for analysis, assessment and production of media content. Using media literacy to enhance community leadership and development. Transforming media consumption into an active process, and using independent media for active citizenship. (Educação para a leitura crítica da mídia)
3.   Social, Interactive, and Participatory Media: Researching the effect of Internet use on public and social life. Focus on social networking sites—such as Facebook, Orkut, Twitter, etc—and community engagement in social media across cultures and borders.
4.   F2F Communication: Including studies on interpersonal (persuasion, message production and reception, nonverbal communication, organizational/small-group, communication among cultural, age-based, or other social groups), or relational communication.
5.   Public Relations and Commercial Media: Including studies on advertising, marketing and communication.

NOTE: Papers in any session may include comparisons between communication issues both in Brazil and the U.S., but may also analyze an issue related to a singular country.  We encourage theme-related papers but will consider all submissions.

ICA 2012 Preconference: The Fifth Global Communication Forum on
New Media and Internet Communication and Communities in China

Following four successful consecutive Global Communication Forums in Shanghai China , this year, the Fifth Global Communication Forum will be held as a preconference of ICA 2012 annual conference at Phoenix, USA. The preconference theme is New Media and Internet Communication and Communities in China. We will focus on hot issues of communication and social interaction in China.

Thirty years has passed since China started the reform and opening-up policy in 1978. As the largest developing country, China has made great achievements in economics, with the nominal GDP ranking the second largest in the world. Yet the political system reform and social management still face many problems. The growth of new communication technologies, especially the boom of internet, has made unprecedented changes to China’s traditional communication ecology, and consequentially caused changes in politics, economics, society, and culture etc. On the one hand, new media and internet accelerate the exposure of contradiction and conflicts in all sides. On the other hand, new technologies provide opportunities and practicability to solve these problems.

A crucial question is “How to study, comprehend and utilize the rules of new media and internet to maximize their positive roles and eradicate drawbacks?”. Researchers in communication have the responsibility to find the answer and this is also a good chance to show talents. Against the background of globalization, China and the world can not be separated from each other. Therefore, the preconference opens a platform for researchers interested in New Media and Internet Communication and Communities in China. We cordially invite people from all over the world to share their findings, exchange insights, and make efforts to promote communication research.

Paper Submission and Publishing
1.      Papers submitted in English must use the APA style and papers submitted in Chinese should follow the standard of Chinese academic publishing. All abstracts must have an English version.
2.      The abstract submission deadline is 31 October 2011. The full paper submission deadline is 29 February 2012.
3.      Please send in two SOFT copies as e-mail attachments to 2012gcforum@gmail.com, one with the title of the paper, name(s) of the author(s) as well as affiliation(s), and the other without the author’s information. The named copy should be operated in MSWord while the anonymous one can be in MSWord or PDF.
4.      Please list (1) title of the paper, (2) name(s) of the author(s), (3) affiliation(s), (4) mailing address(es) and (5) email address(es) in the e-mail.
5.      Preconference participants are invited to submit revised manuscripts after the ICA conference for considered in an edited collection (publisher undecided).

Registration and Accommodation
Each attendee must pay the registration fee, USD80 or RMB500 per person. The registration fee covers the costs for meeting rooms, forum materials, snacks and beverage, lunch and dinner. Once their papers are accepted, attendees shall pay the registration fee to an appointed account in advance of the preconference date. Attendees will pay the costs of transportation, accommodation and breakfast by themselves.

An optional post-preconference tour of Grand Canyon will be organized on 24 May 2012. Interested attendees must register with ICA because they are making arrangements and calculating expenses. Others can explore the city themselves.

We anticipate more than 100 presenters and attendees at the preconference. Distinguished scholars, professors, research students, leaders from industry, and government personnel are all welcome to join us.

(1)Early in April 2007, the first Global Communication Forum and ceremony establishing the Global Communication Research Institute at Shanghai Jiao Tong University were held in Shanghai. Two hundred and fifty researchers from academe and industry attended this conference. Dr. Maxwell McCombs of the University of Texas chaired the first Global Communication Forum which focused on “New Media Communication in the Context of Globalization: Education and Research.”

In June 2008, the Second Global Communication Forum was held at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. This conference was co-sponsored by the Global Communication Research Institute of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the School of Media and Design of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the Department of Communication at Purdue University, and the International Communication Association. Dr. Pamela J. Shoemaker of Syracuse University was invited to chair the conference. The theme of the conference was “New Media and Social Change”. In addition to plenary speakers and paper presentations, activities were held to assist victims of the Sichuan Earthquake in China. Over 300 scholars from China and other countries attended the conference.

In October 2009, the Third Global Communication Forum and the 2009 Chinese Communication Association annual convention were held together and co-sponsored by the Global Communication Research Institute of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the International Communication Association, the Department of Communication at Purdue University, and Chinese Communication Association.  The conference theme was “Communication in the e-Society: Challenges, Opportunities, and Responsibilities”.

In September 2010, the fourth Global Communication Forum was held at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. This conference was co-sponsored by Global Communication Research Institute of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, School of Media and Design of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Department of Communication, College of Liberal Arts, Purdue University, Department of Intercultural Communication and Management at Copenhagen Business School, International Communication Association. The conference theme was “Global Cities in e-Times: Urban Design, Creativity and Collaboration”.
