The Department of Communication Arts at Illinois College invites applications for an assistant professor, tenure-track position in intercultural communication with particular focus on intercultural communication within organizations to begin Fall 2022. Strong preference will be given to candidates with expertise and/or interest in studying issues of race, ethnicity, and culture within organizations in the U.S. context. Preference will also be given to candidates who have additional expertise/interest in the areas of strategic communication, social media, health communication, and/or another specialized area of expertise.

This position is part of a “cluster hire” with 3 tenure-track positions focused around the study of race, ethnicity, and justice in the United States, and include positions in African-American history, intercultural and organizational communication, and criminology and justice studies. The positions will be housed in three interdisciplinary departments: HPPR (History, Philosophy, Political Science, and Religion), Communication Arts, and Sociology (which includes Criminal Justice). The successful candidates will contribute to the continued development of a new African-American Studies minor, created in response to strong student interest. As part of a cohort, these positions will have additional mentoring and professional development support.

Imagine you are having a conversation with your neighbours when they drop a negative comment about migration. We all face similar situations from time to time – how have you handled them?

Did you let it pass or did you speak up? Did you explain why the comment was discriminatory or hurtful? In the policy brief “Claiming the power of dialogue: Toolkit for antirumours dialogue,” strategies for face to face dialogue are presented with the aim of providing the readers with a simple toolkit to engage in active antirumours dialogue. The policy brief complements the Antirumours handbook and other antirumours materials, and is part of a series of papers and training materials developed for the Academy on Alternative Narratives and Intercultural Communication.

University College London (UCL) is seeking to fill a professorship in language learning and intercultural communication. The post holder will provide strategic leadership in the development of research and teaching in the areas of intercultural communication and modern language education, at the IOE and across UCL. The Professor will work with a team of academics whose expertise spans a range of areas in diverse education contexts You will develop and lead a new Master’s program in Intercultural Communication for Language Teaching and Learning, and to lead on the development of an effective research strategy that enables the team to work towards national and international recognition of their work. The The Department of Communication Studies at Emerson College seeks a faculty colleague with expertise in the fields of Communication Studies, Intercultural Communication and Civic Engagement. This will be a full-time appointment at the tenure-track Assistant Professor rank. The appointment begins on August 19, 2021.

The successful candidate for this position will be expected to teach undergraduate courses in the Communication Studies major including, but not limited to, Research Methods, Intercultural Communication, and the Fundamentals of Speech Communication course required of all Emerson students. Other courses in the Departments’ Political Communication, Sports Communication, and Public Relations majors may also be available. The faculty member also will have the opportunity to develop new courses.
The position also includes opportunities to teach in the three Department of Communication Studies graduate programs: MA in Sports Communication, MA in Public Relations and the MA in Political Communication. The successful candidate should have both vision and experience in incorporating diversity and inclusion and cultural competency within the curriculum. Previous college teaching experience with diverse students or relevant professional diversity and civic engagement experience is required. Salma T. Shukri (Ph.D., University of Denver) is an instructor of communication in the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Salma ShukriHer areas of interest include intercultural communication, interpersonal communication, and conflict management. Specifically, she explores how communication—specifically, how we communicate about difference—serves as both an instrument and a barrier to inclusion and belonging. Along with having taught several intercultural communication courses at various institutions, Salma has also held several non-academic, professional positions with local and international organizations in the field of conflict mediation and cross-cultural dialogue.

Additionally, Salma engages in methodological research, advancing qualitative research methods through her work. She has published this work in top-tier journals, including the Journal of International and Intercultural Communication and in Text and Performance Quarterly.
