U Tampere Job Ads: Social Research (Finland)

Five associate professor or professor posts in the New Social Research programme

The University of Tampere is an internationally renowned research-led university and one of the few in the world to specialise in the social sciences.  It has a lively, multidisciplinary and international research environment with a staff of 2,200 and 15,000 students.

The University places strong emphasis on rigorous scholarship in areas of significant social relevance. To help achieve this objective, the University has commenced the New Social Research programme. NSR has five core themes: governing complexity; transformation of agency and empowerment; the changing nature of work; the future of well-being, and; new forms of communication, information and interaction. NSR will become a truly international programme, working across disciplinary boundaries and in partnership with a wide range of external stakeholders nationally and internationally. At the centre of the programme are eleven fully-funded associate or full professor posts. The director, Professor Rebecca Boden, and the first six appointments are already in place. The University of Tampere is now seeking to complete the team by appointing a further five associate or full professors. Appointees will have dual affiliation between NSR and an appropriate faculty, ensuring a clear career trajectory, and at the end of this period it is anticipated that they will take up permanent posts in one of the University’s faculties, as appropriate.

The University of Tampere is seeking highly motivated and accomplished academics who will be active and innovative co-builders of the NSR programme as research leaders. In addition to developing a strong individual research profile within the broad remit of NSR’s activities, you would work collaboratively with fellow NSR researchers to achieve significant programme synergies. Activities would include: effective research leadership (particularly of early career academics); facilitating the development of the NSR profile nationally and internationally; and seeking, winning and managing major research funding. A key role of the NSR programme is to make a major contribution to the further development of the University’s research profile more generally. As such, you would be expected to work collaboratively and constructively with appropriate faculties to embed programme gains across the institution.  Whilst the main emphasis of these roles for the first five years is on research, you would be expected to make a gradually increasing and expertise-appropriate contribution to research-led teaching, curriculum development and research student supervision in the faculties.

What you can offer
You must have: a doctoral degree in a field relevant to the research programme; high-level scientific expertise; an excellent international publication record; and teaching/supervision skills and experience across the range of levels.

Additionally, successful candidates will have a proven track record of international scientific cooperation, and the ability to offer advanced research-led teaching and supervision. Your research interests will be aligned to one or more themes in the NSR programme, but you will be able to demonstrate how you would develop those further. NSR especially welcomes applications under the theme the changing nature of work and is less likely to make any appointments of candidates whose principal contribution would be in the theme governing complexity.

Your proposed work for the duration of the programme will evidence a good fit with NSR objectives and how you would work in an inter- and multidisciplinary environment. Ideally you will have experience of leading or making a major contribution to a research group and a track record of successful applications for external research funding.

Finnish universities operate a national University Salary System and salaries will be determined by reference to that. At commencement, the minimum monthly salary of an associate professor will range between €5,000 and €5,600 a month and that of a professor between €5,700 and €6,400 a month. Higher salaries may be agreed dependent upon experience and/or performance.

These posts are subject to a four month probationary period. Initial appointment as associate professor is for five years and, subject to successful performance, post holders will become tenured members of faculty staff at the end of the five year period. The evaluation of suitability for a tenured position will commence after four years in post and appointees will be supported throughout the five year period to ease transition to faculty positions.  Full professors will hold a permanent appointment from the outset.

Duties

Applicants for appointment at Assistant Professor level should normally have evidence-based research experience (as supported by evidence of research projects and outputs). Experience of postdoctoral research positions will be a plus but not required.

Applicants for appointment at Professor and Associate Professor levels should have substantial years of relevant post-qualification experience and an excellent record of relevant academic and/or professional achievements.  Candidates with less experience will be considered for appointment at a lower level.

Terms of employment:

The Fall 2017 Harron Family Endowed Chair in Communication at Villanova University

The Department of Communication at Villanova University invites applications for the annual Harron Family Endowed Chair in Communication. The Department seeks a senior colleague whose scholarship, regardless of specialization or methodological orientation, has made a significant contribution to the discipline of Communication. This visiting, one-semester appointment is for the Fall of 2017. University-sponsored housing will be provided for the duration of the appointment. The responsibilities of the position include teaching one undergraduate and one graduate course related to his/her area of expertise, delivering a lecture to the Villanova community during the semester in residence, and mentoring faculty and students in the Communication Department. Three Open-Rank Positions: Digital Media Production/Emerging Media/Strategic Communication at Gulf University for Science and Technology

The Department of Mass Communication and Media (MCM) invites applications for three open-rank, full-time positions. Position 1: Media Production/Broadcast Specialist
The ideal candidate will have a mix of academic, professional and technical expertise in the areas of broadcasting and digital media production. Experience in radio or television broadcast production preferred. Teaching responsibilities include fundamentals of broadcasting, field production courses and mass media management. Additional skills such as cinematography, editing, audio production or digital storytelling an asset. The candidate will play a leadership role in the evolution of our current broadcasting concentration into a broader emphasis on multimedia production on set, on location, and online.

Position 2: Emerging Media
Candidate sought with expertise on the social impacts of digital media, as well as the effective application and evaluation of social media tools. Specialized interest in digital media production, strategic communication, media regulation or visual communication would complement both the current and future curriculum. Teaching expectations include media theory, social media planning and evaluation, writing for the media and general mass communication courses in line with the candidate’s background and interests.

Position 3: Strategic Communication

Candidate sought with expertise in strategic communication, international/intercultural public relations or other related areas. Interest in or experience with community engagement and social responsibility is highly desirable. Teaching expectations include a range of PR courses, as well as communication campaigns, advertising, integrated marketing communication, persuasive writing or political communication. Those with professional experience are especially welcome.

The Department of Mass Communication and Media offers a B.A. degree with concentrations in public relations and advertising, visual communication, and radio/TV broadcasting. There are approximately 500 majors overall with the largest majority concentrating in PR. The MCM department prides itself on an active and collegial academic environment with a strong commitment to experiential learning. Position 3. Tenured Associate or Full Professor in the Political Economy of the Middle East  at National University of Singapore

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) and the Middle East Institute (MEI) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) invite applications for a tenured Associate or Full Professorship in the Political Economy of the Middle East. Advanced Assistant Professors are also welcome to apply. We particularly invite applicants with research expertise in non-Western literary and visual traditions related to South and/or East Asia, South America, Africa, and/or the MENA region. Candidates will contribute to the BA and MA degrees in literature and the minor in film and visual culture.

AUB faculty engage in research, teaching, and service. The new hire is expected to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels and to participate in the collegial governance of the Department and University.

The position is at the assistant professor level. The appointment is for an initial period of four years with opportunities for renewal and advancement. The usual teaching load is not more than 5 courses a year. Applicants must have completed their PhD by August 2017. The language of instruction is English.

Assistant/Associate Professor of Media Studies at University of Virginia

The Department of Media Studies at the University of Virginia seeks to hire a tenure-track Assistant Professor or tenured Associate Professor. We welcome applicants specializing in media and the African American experience or media and African and/or African Diaspora studies, with a preference given to those in the first area. The appointment begins with the fall term of 2017, with an anticipated start date of July 25, 2017. The successful candidate at the assistant professor level must have a Ph.D or be ABD with expected completion by May; show evidence of research promise in the field of media studies; and demonstrate a commitment to innovative and effective teaching. Associate professor candidates must have an outstanding publication record of innovative research in media studies and proven teaching excellence. In either case, the successful candidate must hold a Ph.D at the time of appointment.

This position is part of a larger University of Virginia hiring initiative in the Global South that seeks to foster inter-disciplinary and cross-disciplinary teaching and research. The candidate hired will be appointed for the first two years as an Andrew W. Mellon Fellow with the Institute of Humanities and Global Cultures, an appointment that will provide one course release per year.
