The School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences at the University of Edinburgh is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Discourse Analysis to our department of Linguistics and English Language.  The successful candidate will contribute original research and public impact in an area of discourse analysis, offer teaching at all levels of the curriculum in this area, contribute to our thriving MSc programme in Applied Linguistics including directing the degree when necessary, and recruit and supervise PhD students.

Shortlisting is anticipated to take place week commencing 12th March 2018. We aim to contact shortlisted candidates at least two week in advance.

Short-listed candidates will be required to give two presentations on their research and teaching to the department as well as an interview panel process. A full timetable will be issued in advance. Interviews are like to take place week commencing 2nd April 2018.

The Department of Linguistics and English Language particularly welcome applications from candidates belonging to groups that have been traditionally underrepresented in the subject, including, but not limited to, women and ethnic minorities.

It came about because he is a student of Anna Klyueva, at the University of Houston-Clear Lake, and she turned posters into a course project (other faculty are welcome to do so as well, of course).

Given that translations of the Key Concepts in Intercultural Dialogue have received so many views, anyone who wishes to translate their own poster into another language (or two) is invited to provide that as well. If you want to volunteer to translate someone else’s poster into a language in which you are fluent, send in a note before starting, to receive approval and to confirm no one else is working on the same one.

CFP ECREA: Centres & Peripheries (Switzerland)

ConferencesThe European Communication Research and Education Association (ECREA) in partnership with USI Università della Svizzera italiana call for proposals to be presented at the 7th European Communication Conference, to be held in Lugano, Switzerland, from 31 October to 3 November 2018. The Conference has chosen the key theme of “Centres and Peripheries: Communication, Research, Translation.” Deadline: 28 February 2018.

First, the conference examines the issues of “core” and “margins”, inviting scholars to stretch the boundaries of media and communication research as an academic discipline. We welcome presentation of research that seeks to take communication and media studies to new territories and new fields of application.

Second, the key conference theme of centres and peripheries means reconsidering geographical, cultural and linguistic borders or boundaries. Many areas of media and communication research have been dominated by American and European scholarship, but these traditions can learn methodological and theoretical insights coming, for example, from Asian, South American and African research.

CFP Language, Translation & Migration (UK)

The modern world is interconnected, mobile, multilingual and diverse. Linguistic diversity however does not indicate linguistic equality. On the contrary, the linguistically diverse nature of contemporary societies has implications for social justice, with potentially differential access to resources and the public sphere. In this context the politics of language are a significant factor for the promotion of social cohesion. Research has repeatedly shown that linguistic and ethnic minorities are disadvantaged in interaction with institutions. This two-day conference brings together scholars and practitioners from different professional and disciplinary backgrounds to discuss the role of language as a key factor in globalised societies.

The conference will be followed by a public summit focusing on the relationship between language, translation, social mobility and social cohesion. Participants will include scholars from the Humanities and Social Sciences as well as representatives from the voluntary sector, the creative industries, non-governmental organisations and policy makers.

We invite contributions which encourage interdisciplinary dialogue between scholars and practitioners in sociolinguistics and applied linguistics, translation studies, modern languages, sociology, health, legal studies and other areas in which language behaviour and language politics play a key role both as research objects and professional practices.

The Department of English at Indiana University, Bloomington, IN, invites applications for a Culbertson Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow in the field of writing studies. The position will be for two years, starting in 2018/19. The successful candidate will teach two courses per semester with an annual salary of $55,000 plus benefits. An annual research supplement of $3,000 will also be provided. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. with strength in composition by July 1. We especially welcome experience and expertise in the teaching of professional writing, digital rhetoric, multilingual writing, and/or cultural rhetorics. The Fellow will participate in a lively community of rhetoric scholars that includes specialists in communication as well as specialists in writing.

Rice U Postdoc: Languages & Intercultural Communication (USA)

PostdocsThe Rice Center for Languages & Intercultural Communication (CLIC) at Rice University in Houston, Texas, invites applications for a two-year post-doctoral fellowship beginning July 1, 2018. Application deadline: February 28, 2018.

Candidates should hold a PhD in Applied Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, or related fields of studies with a focus of analysis on any language, preferably the languages taught at the Center. Preferred areas of expertise are: writing/reading/literacy development, assessment/testing, interactional competence, lexical and grammatical development, interlanguage pragmatics, and study abroad. Applicants must have a PhD at the time of appointment and they should have earned the PhD no earlier than 2013.

Teaching and teaching-related responsibilities will include professional development workshops or undergraduate language classes in their area of expertise. Research responsibilities include a minimum of two scholarly presentations per year at a major national or international conference and at least two scholarly articles submitted over a two-year period.

Professor in New Media Studies.

The School of Humanities and Social Science at Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) invites applications for faculty position in the areas of innovative media studies (specialization areas including, but not limited to, social media analytics, data journalism, cybersecurity and internet governance, digital and mobile media design, media psychology, health communication, marketing communication, etc.), at the rank of full professor/associate professor levels with prospect for tenure, although junior candidates with very competitive academic records may be considered for positions of assistant professor. Candidates with exceptionally outstanding records may be considered for Chair Professorship with tenure. Senior Scholar in Global Studies

The School of Humanities and Social Science at CUHK (SZ) invites nominations and applications for a senior scholar position in the area of global studies (broadly defined, including, but not limited to, international relations, international and regional studies, globalization development and trends, global governance, global sustainability, etc.).

Candidates for this senior position are expected to have prior experience in leadership position(s) in the relevant areas, and to have attained professorship rank (or equivalent) or above (e.g., distinguished professorship, chair professorship) in competitive institutions. The successful candidate for this position is expected to serve as the leader in establishing and developing a center/program of excellence in the area of global studies (broadly defined, and name tentative).

Appointments will normally be made on contract basis for up to three years initially, leading to longer-term appointment or tenure later, subject to successful performance evaluation and mutual agreement. In cases where a candidate has an established record of excellence and demonstrable potential for continued success, tenure may be offered to the candidate at the time of initial appointment.
