Wabash Democracy and Public Discourse, an interdisciplinary program at Wabash College, is pleased to announce a two-year, post-doctoral Fellowship in Dialogue and Deliberation to begin July 1, 2023. The area of concentration is open to a broad range of fields including but not limited to communication, rhetoric, anthropology, economics, cultural studies, political science, or sociology; however, the candidate’s teaching and research must connect the intersections of dialogue and deliberation, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Wabash Democracy and Public Discourse (WDPD) is an undergraduate research and practice program that trains students to research, design, and facilitate public dialogue and deliberations on a range of issues. The post-doctoral fellow will join an enthusiastic team of a faculty director, program associate staff member, and undergraduate research Democracy Fellows. WDPD has partnered with campus organizations and communities to host dialogues and deliberations on varying topics including those relating to race, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The successful candidate will contribute to the mission of Wabash Democracy and Public Discourse: to teach constructive practices of engagement and communication on topics of public problems; to stimulate productive public discourse on campus and in the community through informed discussion, debate, and deliberation; develop civic leadership through participation in public life; and promote the free speech rights and responsibilities for every individual in the marketplace of ideas.

The Center for Intercultural Dialogue publishes a series of short briefs describing Key Concepts in Intercultural Dialogue. Different people, working in different countries and disciplines, use different vocabulary to describe their interests, yet these terms overlap. Our goal is to provide some of the assumptions and history attached to each concept for those unfamiliar with it. As there are other concepts you would like to see included, send an email to the series editor, Wendy Leeds-Hurwitz. If there are concepts you would like to prepare, provide a brief explanation of why you think the concept is central to the study of intercultural dialogue, and why you are the obvious person to write up that concept.

U Liverpool: Postdoc in the Language of Food and Race (UK but Remote)

The postholder will provide research and administrative support to the project ‘The language of food and race: A participatory ethnography of Chinese food in the UK’ funded by the Participatory Research Support Fund at the University of Liverpool. The project investigates how the ways we do and talk about food are shaped by racial stereotypes and ideologies, with a view to expose and challenge food-related racism and build community solidarity and cultural resilience within the Chinese community in Liverpool. The PDRA will work closely with the principal investigator Dr Shuang Gao in developing, co-ordinating, administering and facilitating the research.

The Department of Communication at Villanova University seeks applicants for a full-time Postdoctoral Fellow, to begin Fall 2023. The position is renewable for up to three years. The position is designed to foster the professional development of recent PhDs on their journey to full-time faculty positions. Successful candidates will gain formal teaching experience as well as support and mentorship from Communication faculty. The department is particularly interested in expanding studies at the juncture of communication and race which may include intersections with practices of gender, sexuality, ability, transnationalism, etc.

Basic requirements: Ph.D. in Communication (ABD considered, with degree in hand by August 2023). Generation Z (Gen Z), the first to have been born after the mass-adoption of the Internet, is the most electronically connected generation in history. Growing up with many high-tech devices, these digital natives are used to having access to a vast number of diverse information, doing real-time communication with their friends and others regardless of physical location and generating content instantaneously to all kinds of international digital platforms. Exposed fully to the Internet-based world, how are the attitudes and beliefs of Gen Z influenced by the virtual world, especially the world of social media? How are the media use of Gen Z similar or different between countries? What are differences between Gen Z and previous generation in terms of their perceptions and knowledge of their own countries and other countries? How does video games, the most globalized content around the world affecting the young generation?

Organizers welcome innovative and original research studies addressing the theme on Generation Z and authenticity in global communication from all disciplines, methodologies, and professions, including case studies, quantitative and qualitative research, data and network science, etc.

The preconference will have paper awards for full paper submissions but welcome extended abstract submissions (up to 500 words). All full papers and abstracts will go through double-blind review. First Place paper will receive USD300 cash award, Second Place paper will receive USD200 cash award, and Third Place paper will receive USD100 cash award. Online Media and Global Communication will reserve the first right of refusal for publishing the award-winning submitted papers in the themed issue.
