The 10th MiReKoc International Summer School will be held in collaboration with IMISCOE. The program reflects the importance of methodological debates. This year’s Summer School includes two weeks of lectures, lab sessions and discussion sessions led by a distinguished international faculty members and experts in the field, exploring different themes focusing on both qualitative and quantitative methods including ethnography, participatory methods, urban mapping, network analysis, big data, visual methods and social media methodologies as well as ethics in migration research to offer a space for scholars and participants to reflect on methodological challenges and opportunities.

MiReKoc International Summer School program is designed for graduate students and PhD candidates, early career researchers, policy analysts, NGO and international organization practitioners, as well as junior experts in the field. The language of the Summer School is English.  MiReKoc International Summer School does not only offer expanding the knowledge of its participants, but also promises networking opportunities between them and distinguished faculty to enhance both parties’ research agendas. Applications from all over the world are encouraged.

Language Diversity, Education & Social Participation (Germany)

Earn up to 10 credits (ECTS). Language of instruction: English. Linguistic (as well as cultural and social) diversity are basic characteristics of today’s societies. Their causes include, among others, increasing migration, globalisation, new technical possibilities of communication, and interactions across traditional borders. Using three nations with significant migration – Australia, China and Germany – as examples, the course will explore how increasing diversity affects education and social participation, and what policies and discourses have been developed in response to linguistic diversity. Despite their different socio-political traditions in dealing with migration, the challenges and responses to linguistic diversity in the three countries share many similarities. Central among these is that linguistic diversity continues to be a central factor in social exclusion in the three countries. All Summer School programs include our supplementary program, focusing on German culture and history, taught through field trips and excursions.

Is ‘qualitative data analysis’ too vague for you? Are you wondering how to do justice to your data? If you are researching social processes, institutions, culture or identity,  but are unsure about how to analyse the discourse data from your fieldwork, then consider joining this five-day research training course. 
The programme is designed to help PhD and post-doctoral researchers to navigate the twin perils of over- and under-interpreting discourse data. It introduces a range of key perspectives and tools used to study language and communication ethnographically and it facilitates the study of social practice in a wide range of different settings – education, workplace, recreation, health etc.

EIUC Summer School: Cinema Human Rights and Advocacy (Italy)

The Summer School is a training initiative jointly developed by the Global Campus and Picture People. The 11-day intense training is aimed at young professionals wishing to broaden their understanding on the connections between human rights, films, digital media and video advocacy, to share ideas and foster participatory and critical thinking on urgent human rights issues, debate with experts and filmmakers from all over the world during the Venice international Film Festival and learn how to use films as a tool for social and cultural change.

NOTE: Due to the global outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Summer School in Cinema, Human Rights and Advocacy will take place in a reduced 7-day format from 31 August to 06 September 2020, taking into account any eventual measures adopted by the 77th Venice International Film Festival.

Study Abroad: Food Media, Communication & Trends (Italy)

Students have the possibility to earn three credits for this course from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. There are no prerequisites. The course is offered within the Critical Studies on Food in Italy Summer 2019 program which assists students in understanding the role of food in human cultures as well as the range of choices and values implicit in the foods eaten in Italy and elsewhere.  Students can also select from the other courses provided in the program: Critical Studies on Food; Food, Nutrition, and Culture in Italy; Food Waste in Italy;  Italian Language for Food and Business (Italian) (all 3 credits).  Some scholarships are available.

Gustolab International also offers courses in Vietnam (June 30-July 27) and Japan (May 26-June 23).

Fairleigh Dickinson U Study Abroad in UK 2019

Study AbroadStudy Abroad in England: International Communication and Culture, Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Wroxton College, Oxfordshire, England, May 26 – June 7, 2019. Deadline: April 5, 2019.

MCOM 7002 / COMM 4070 International Communication and Culture is a 12-day seminar offered at Wroxton College each summer for graduate students in the MA in Communication and selected students from the BA in Communication Studies. The seminar consists of invited speakers, case studies, site visits, and leisure trips to London, Stratford, and Oxford.

The objective of the seminar is make students familiar with the cultural, historical, and political contexts in which professional and other interactions take place from a UK and European perspective. Students will also examine case studies conducted by UK media, advertising, and public relations practitioners which show how issues of culture, history, politics, and theory play out in actual corporate communication practice.

The 2019 course will take place from May 26 through June 7. Students completing the course receive three credits toward their degree. Students from the MBA program, the MA in Organizational Behavior, the BA in Communication Studies, and other universities and colleges may also register with permission of the course leader, Gary Radford.
