ASC-IIAS Fellowship Application (The Netherlands)

The ASC-IIAS Joint Fellowship Programme
This fellowship is jointly offered by the International Institute of Asian Studies (IIAS) and the African Studies Centre in Leiden, The Netherlands.

It aims to attract researchers whose work is informed by current theoretical debates in the social sciences and humanities over global connectivities and who are able to critically engage with shifting paradigms in “area studies” beyond the ways in which these have traditionally been conceived in the West.

We are particularly interested in receiving fellowship proposals that go beyond a mere analysis of current issues associated with African-Asian comparative economic developments or Chinese investments in Africa — although none of these themes, if appraised critically and for their societal consequences, will of course be excluded. Our definition of Asia and Africa is broad and inclusive, Asia ranging from the Middle-East to the Pacific Coast, and Africa from North-Africa to the southern tip of the continent.
• Fellowship of maximum 6 months
• Fellows will receive a monthly grant to cover the cost of living and housing

• Candidates should have a PhD

Description
This seminar will focus on Critical Discourse Studies-also known as Critical Discourse Analysis, or CDA-as a theory/method in Communication, and more specifically on the opportunities it presents for scholars throughout our discipline to engage in social justice-oriented research and pedagogy. Our primary goal is to create space for collaboration among communication scholars as we discuss theoretical, methodological, and pedagogical issues related to Critical Discourse Studies, as well as the opportunities that this approach presents for ongoing studies of different practices/artifacts/texts across NCA’s interest groups.

Requirements
We invite submissions for both roundtables and workshops.
For those interested in participating in the roundtables: please send a short position paper (7-10 pages) to Susana Martínez Guillem (susanam@unm.edu) and Christopher Michael Toula (ctoula1@mygsu.onmicrosoft.com) focusing on “Critical Discourse Studies’ Theoretical Legacies and Futures in Communication Studies,” or “Methodological and Pedagogical Considerations for Critical Discourse Studies in/across Communication Areas.” Please indicate the roundtable that best fits your proposal. Your email subject heading should read NCA SEMINAR APPLICATION and your submission should include your name, title, institution, and email address at the top.

Those interested in participating in the workshops: please send a short description of your text(s) (1000 words maximum) to Susana Martínez Guillem and Christopher Michael Toula, and briefly discuss the initial questions you are trying to tackle in your analysis. The questions should be open-ended to allow for flee-floating feedback and discussion. The final number and focus of the workshops will depend on the number and quality of the submissions, as well as the overarching themes emerging out of the proposals.

This is an exciting opportunity to learn about nuances within CDS, discuss ongoing and potential research applications in different communication areas, and engage in hands-on analysis of your own texts with immediate feedback to help you move your project forward.

The Berlin Prize

The American Academy in Berlin invites applications for its residential fellowships for the academic year 2016/2017. The deadline is Wednesday, September 30, 2015 (12 noon EST or 6 pm CET). Applications may be submitted online or mailed to the Berlin office.

The Academy welcomes applications from emerging and established scholars, writers, and professionals who wish to engage in independent study in Berlin. Approximately 20 Berlin Prizes are conferred annually. Past recipients have included historians, economists, poets and novelists, journalists, legal scholars, anthropologists, musicologists, and public policy experts, among others.

Fellowships are typically awarded for an academic semester or, on occasion, for an entire academic year. Bosch Fellowships in Public Policy may be awarded for shorter stays of six to eight weeks. Benefits include round-trip airfare, partial board, a $5,000 monthly stipend, and accommodations at the Academy’s lakeside Hans Arnhold Center in the Berlin-Wannsee district.

Fellowships are restricted to individuals based permanently in the United States. Candidates in academic disciplines must have completed a PhD at the time of application. Candidates working in other fields-such as journalism, filmmaking, law, or public policy-must have equivalent professional degrees. Writers should have published at least one book at the time of application. The Academy gives priority to a proposal’s scholarly merit rather than any specific relevance to Germany.

Please note that the Inga Maren Otto Berlin Prize in Music Composition and the Guna S. Mundheim Berlin Prize in the Visual Arts are invitation-only competitions. We also do not accept applications in mathematics and the hard sciences.

An ethnomethodological / conversation analytic study of evidence-based decision-making

About the project:
Research into how the tools and products of Operational Research (OR) are used in the interactions between analysts and their clients has recently begun to attract academic attention. Using ethnomethodological and conversation analytic methods, this PhD project will examine the interactional practices that comprise the use of OR tools and products and identify what works and what is less effective.

The site for the PhD research project is the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl). One of the challenges faced by Dstl is how best to support Evidence Based Decision Making (EBDM), in the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and across government, and to increase the use of evidence to support key decisions. It is anticipated that the PhD project will collect and investigate real-time conduct in the use of OR tools and products to support EBDM in a number of application areas.

The Danish Council for Independent Research (DFF) invites applications for grants towards research activities. DFF wishes to strengthen and develop the internationalisation of Danish research and the Council therefore welcomes applications that involve international activities. The objective is to give the best researchers and research groups the opportunity to coordinate and develop their research collaborations across country borders, and to give talented researchers the opportunity to spend periods abroad as part of their research careers. Consequently, aspects of internationalisation may form an element in applications for all of DFF’s instruments.
