The Annals of the International Communication Association is a new peer-reviewed quarterly journal publishing state-of-the-discipline literature reviews and essays dedicated to the exchange of interdisciplinary and internationally diverse scholarship relating to communication in its many forms.

The Annals will continue the traditions established in Communication Yearbook by providing an updated context for key research from across the Association. The Annals of the International Communication Association publishes three types of articles.

Review Articles are state-of-the-discipline literature reviews and essays, including descriptive reviews, meta-analyses, and theoretical essays. Reviews can be retrospective reviews, which help readers understand the development of current knowledge within the discipline, or prescriptive essays that create a roadmap for where research needs to go in the future. Reviews will go through the traditional peer review process.

Communication Insights are solicited reviews that examine a set of predetermined topics that provide a degree of continuity across the years and indicate how a specific research domain has developed. A set of predetermined topics will rotate over 5-year periods.

Topical Book Review Essays are essays that should include a discussion of recently published books that focus on a central theme within the discipline. The goal of the Annals Topical Book Review Essays is to provide a critical synthesis of a set of published books, but the essay should go beyond the confines of a traditional book review. Rather, the focus is on a critical essay that addresses issues pertinent to the discipline. The Editor recommends that at least two books be reviewed within an essay and while the books should be recently published, the inclusion of more classic texts is acceptable. The Editor encourages authors from non-English-speaking countries to consider submitting topical review essays of books not available in the English language in order to increase the reach of communication studies research globally. Unlike traditional book reviews, which are solicited, the Topical Book Review Essays are open submission and they will go through the traditional peer review process.

The Annals is both international and interdisciplinary in scope, with authors and chapters representing the broad global interests of the International Communication Association. All submissions will be subject to initial editor screening and subsequent peer review as necessary.

Venice Academy of Human Rights 2016

The Venice Academy of Human Rights will take place from 4-13 July 2016 on the topic “Backlash against Human Rights?”. The faculty includes a distinguished opening lecture by Judge András Sajó (Vice-President of the European Court of Human Rights), a general course by Robert McCorquodale (BIICL) as well as lectures and discussion sessions with Joseph A. Cannataci (UN Special Rapporteur on the right to privacy), Helen Fenkwick (Durham University), Mark Goodale (University of Lausanne) and Geir Ulfstein (University of Oslo).

The Venice Academy of Human Rights 2016, in co-operation with PluriCourts – Centre of Excellence for the Study of the Legitimate Roles of the Judiciary in the Global Order, discusses the expansion and restriction of human rights regimes, questions of inequality and social change, counter-terrorist laws, same sex unions, privacy and data protection issues as well as the reform of the European Court of Human Rights and UN human rights treaty bodies. The course aims at academics, practitioners, PhD/JSD and master students.

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowships (IF 2016)

CIEN is a research group at the Department of English and German Phylology at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Spain). The issues studied by CIEN research team are concerned with bilingual and multilingual language use and practices from a critical sociolinguistic perspective. The group addresses questions that have a practical and theoretical importance for understanding language and society. Language is understood both as a non-neutral system but also as a form of social action, that has material consequences in people’s everyday life. Multi-sited ethnography is the main methodological tool together with various kinds of qualitative data which are key to understanding social (in)equality. See also the current projects in which the team is involved.

The required postdoctoral investigator needs to have research experience related to the research scope of CIEN. Furthermore, a background in qualitative research methods will be highly valued.

Those researchers who wish to cooperate with CIEN team for the submission of a project proposal under the aforementioned Action should check that they fulfill the eligibility criteria and then send an expression of interest, consisting of:

• A summary presentation of their research proposal

Expressions of interest must be submitted by the 20th of May 2016 to Gema Rubio.

Proposals will be pre-selected on the basis of internal evaluation. Candidates will be informed of the results of the pre-selection by the end of May. The deadline for the submission of proposals to the Commission has been set for the 24th of September 2016.

Eligibility criteria according to the call: All applicants should fulfill the following requirements at the time of application submission:
• Hold a PhD degree in a field related to the research themes of the CIEN Research Group.
• Must not have resided or carried out their main academic or research activities in Spain for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the above mentioned deadline.

Intercultural Innovation Award finalists

The BMW Group and the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) announce finalists for the Intercultural Innovation Award

Ten initiatives have been named finalists by the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) and the BMW Group for the Intercultural Innovation Award. The selection process was highly competitive, with close to 1000 applications received from 120 countries.

The projects selected come from all over the world, representing countries across five continents and underlining the importance of the Intercultural Innovation Award and its commitment to the worldwide promotion of intercultural diversity and understanding.

By supporting sustainable and innovative, intercultural grassroots initiatives with the potential for expansion and replication, the Intercultural Innovation Award aims to contribute to peace and to building more inclusive societies. Launched in 2011, the Intercultural Innovation Award is the result of a unique public-private partnership between the UNAOC and the BMW Group.

During one year, the selected initiatives can enjoy invaluable expert know-how and resources from the BMW Group and UNAOC. In addition to receiving monetary support, the finalists will have the opportunity to participate in training activities and workshops covering diverse subjects such as strategy and planning, implementation analysis and media training, as well as to become a part of an “Intercultural Leaders” network.

The final rankings will be announced during the 7th Global Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, April 25-27, 2016. The official award ceremony will take place on 26 April.

Post Specification

A proven record of teaching excellence and experience in leading small group seminars would be an advantage.

The appointee will be responsible for (a) teaching a general education course on “In Dialogue with Humanity” and other relevant general education courses; (b) designing e-learning materials; and (c) assisting in curriculum development and administrative assignments.

The appointee is expected to commence work around May 2016, in preparation for the start of teaching in September 2016.

Postdoc: Language Policy in Heteroglossic Schools (Belgium)

The Langues et Discours research centre of the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) is looking for a postdoctoral researcher to work on “Between the devil and the deep blue sea. Implementing language policy in urban heteroglossic schools”, a new project funded by the Belgian Fund for Scientific Research (FNRS).

Project description: The project sets out to investigate how teachers implement monolingual policies in distinctly heteroglossic urban schools. Its goals are to investigate how teachers articulate a monolingual policy, to what extent and in what way teachers are responsive to linguistic diversity, and which conditions facilitate either of these realisations. These questions will be explored in four Belgian secondary schools. Data have already been collected for two of these schools by the project promotor. These data will be revisited and compared with new data to be collected by the postdoctoral researcher through ethnographic fieldwork in one or two secondary schools in Brussels (French- and Dutch-medium), depending on the applicant’s command of Dutch and/or French.

Research domains: sociolinguistics, educational linguistics, linguistic anthropology, linguistic ethnography

Tasks:
– carrying out linguistic-ethnographic fieldwork
– analysing interaction in the classroom
– preparing research output for international journals
– presenting research at international conferences
– contributing to occasional supervision of MA students and/or course teaching

We offer:
– a 24-month position, renewable with two years, funded by the Belgian National Science Foundation (FNRS), from 1 October 2016.

Requirements:
– PhD in sociolinguistics or related disciplines (predoctoral applicants must have obtained their PhD at the latest by 30 September 2016).
– Relevant research experience in studying interactional processes, preferably in classroom settings
– Excellent skills in Dutch or French
