Let’s Build a Roof Over the World: Art for Peace

Estonian art for peace is an exhibit created as part of the “Let’s build a roof over the world” project organized by the Fermata Arts Foundation, based in Avon, CT.

“Let’s Build a Roof Over the World” is an international project spearheaded by Fermata Arts Foundation, the Connecticut-based organization that promotes intercultural dialogue between New England states and post-Soviet countries. A total of 1,375 students and professional artists from 13 countries participated in this project, including Estonia, Moldova, Ukraine, the United States, Kyrgyzstan, and other post-Soviet countries. A total of 221 exhibitions have been organized in nine states.

Through the framework of social truth and the role of art in promoting peace, each school approaches the theme with a different focus. “The Peace in the World” is the theme of the current Estonian exhibit, which has been circulating throughout regional libraries. The previous exhibit from Moldova approached this theme through a mythological lens. An upcoming exhibit from Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan will center on the theme of “Ideal Home” – older students have created architectural models of houses, and younger students will explore fairy tale homes.

From UC Berkeley’s I-House comes the storytelling podcast From All Corners. Featuring an array of I-House residents, the project was born of the notion that powerful stories can inspire intercultural learning and make friends out of strangers. Each episode is a jolt of empathy—spotlighting true stories about the people we meet, the heartbreaks we suffer, the lessons we learn, those frightful experiences that unravel us, and the moments of wonder that shape us.

Six episodes were produced between September 2019 and February 2020. Due to Covid, in March 2020, the podcast narrowed to a series entitled Under the Dome ” to help us feel the community of being under the I-House Dome — even if we’re now in different places across the globe.” Another 17 episodes were produced through May 2020, at which point the series ended.

This podcast would make a good classroom resource for teaching about intercultural communication generally, or intercultural dialogue specifically. See KC5: Intercultural Communication or KC1: Intercultural Dialogue, as well as other Key Concepts in Intercultural Dialogue published by this Center.

The Norwegian School of Economics (NHH) is pleased to announce a vacancy as PhD Research Scholar at the Department of Professional and Intercultural Communication within the field of Corpus-Assisted Discourse Studies (CADS). The PhD programme and the specialisation offered by the Department of Professional and Intercultural Communication aims to give dedicated students solid training in performing high quality research. The training is based on close cooperation with other national and international institutions offering similar programmes. The students must undertake relevant course work equivalent to 45 ECTS. Given the international focus of the department, the students are strongly encouraged to carry out some of their coursework abroad.

The research proposal should be related to Corpus-Assisted Discourse Studies (CADS), with a topic relevant to the research priorities of the department. Research proposals should include a sustainability perspective. Qualifying education should normally be a master’s degree in language/linguistics/communication studies. Emphasis will be placed on the quality of the research proposal. Some formal education in economics, business administration or other social sciences is an advantage.

The PhD programme at NHH is a four-year fully-funded programme, which combines an intensive course component with research and relevant work experience, preparing the school’s graduates for scholarly positions at recognised international institutions and positions in knowledge-intensive institutions and firms outside of academia. Former PhD graduates have been hired by renowned institutions such as HEC Paris, NOVA SBE, Tilburg University, Hanken School of Economics, Norwegian universities and business schools, as well as in the government, banking, finance and consulting industries.

The theme for the 2023 conference will be: Intercultural. Climate. Change. Organizers hope you will consider how your work contributes to conversations about changing intercultural climates, the effects of climate change on intercultural relations and relationships, and how intercultural relationships, identities, communication, research, practice, and so on are changing in this time of changing social and political climates around the globe. They also welcome papers and symposia proposals on all intercultural topics. (This is an in-person event.)

Summer 2023 Study Abroad: Intercultural Perspectives on Teaching and Learning, New York University in London, UK, 3-17 July 2023. Deadline: February 9, 2023 (priority); March 9, 2023 (or until all places filled).

Examine intercultural perspectives on teaching and learning across national borders. Explore the role that class, race, gender, economics, politics, religion, and cultural heritage play in the evolving dynamics in language policy, bilingual and world language education, and international education.

Participants in the Summer 2023 program in London will critically reflect upon the challenges and opportunities facing educators, school administrators, policy-makers, community organizers, students, etc., in language education, intercultural relations, and international education in the United Kingdom. Our studies will consider the impact of large-scale events across the UK and around the world, such as the anti-globalization forces behind Brexit, the COVID-19 pandemic on education and intergroup relations, the evolving Sino-British relationship over the political transformation in Hong Kong, cross-border infusion and adaptation of immigrants or refugees.

Through seminars and guided site visits in schools, community centers, NGOs, etc., we will share insights with scholars, teachers, policy-makers, writers, administrators, and immigrant community organizers in language, as well as international and intercultural education. Museum visits, theatrical performances, and day trips to important cultural sites are being planned to enrich our experience in intercultural learning positions.

The Department of Hispanic Languages and Literatures invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the level of Assistant Professor in the field of Hispanic Linguistics to begin Fall 2023. They are interested in candidates whose research focuses on any, or a combination, of the following fields: sociolinguistics, Spanish as a heritage language, or second language acquisition. They seek candidates with a strong scholarly background, who are committed to excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching and identify with the mission of Queens College and the City University of New York (CUNY).

The College is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their teaching and other assigned duties. Candidates with training in language pedagogy are especially encouraged to apply. SOAS U London: Postdoc in East Asian Languages & Cultures (UK)

Under the leadership of Dr. Ernest Caldwell, the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures will be hosting a collaborative research project ‘Han phonology: when Chinese became Chinese’, which will produce a Handbook of Han Chinese Phonology intended to supersede the existing monograph length studies of Han phonology. The Handbook will synthesize the existing knowledge of sound change in this period, formalizing this synthesis with finite state transducers. In addition, by applying state-of-the-art network analysis to the linguistic data found in a robust corpus of texts that includes newly unearthed sources, we will pinpoint the time, place, and social milieu of known changes, adjudicate controversial proposal, and provide a rigorous treatment of dialectal and sociolectal variation.

The Post-Doctoral Researcher will work closely with the Principal Investigator, Dr. Caldwell and Co-Investigator, Dr. Nathan Hill. The role is for the primary researcher on the project, and the post holder will be responsible for collecting and processing data and preparing single and multi-authored research outputs. The appointee will have a high degree of self-motivation and a demonstrable pride in the quality of written work and research previously undertaken.

An international conference, co-convened by the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Migration and Integration, Toronto Metropolitan University; Intimacy in Data Driven Culture project, Tampere University; and Co-Designing a Fair Digital Asylum Research Project and Digital Migration Special Interest Group, Utrecht University, this event will have in-person presentations, with audience participation in the hybrid form of in-person and online. The goal of this one-day conference is to bring together scholars to introduce their research on digital technologies and datafication in migration and discuss the ambivalent and contradictory role of datafication and digital technologies for migrants and refugees, as well as the unsettling consequences of datafication in bordering and policymaking. They invite papers that explore these issues from different global contexts and disciplines, from media and communication, migration studies, critical data studies, cultural studies, gender studies, postcolonial studies, science and technology studies, law, social anthropology, criminology, data science and geography. The event fosters cross-disciplinary dialogues of qualitative research, ethnography, digital methods and critical data studies.
