The Interdisciplinary Center for East Asian Studies at the Faculty of Linguistics, Cultures, and Arts is seeking to fill the position of one Postdoctoral Researcher from 01.01.2023 for the duration of the project until 31.12.2025. You are expected to do your own research on migration decisions of Japanese migrants in Germany within the joint EU-funded project AspirE (Decision Making of Aspiring (Re)Migrants to/within the EU: The Case of Labour Market-Leading Migrations from Asia).

Your tasks include working on a qualitative research project in collaboration with the PI (and supported by a research assistant), including:

  • researching the socio-legal context of Japanese migration to Germany (policy analysis)
  • conducting and analyzing expert interviews, group discussions and semi-structured interviews
  • carrying out social network mapping using an open access platform
  • collecting video diaries among selected study participants
  • working with the project partners in the EU as well as
  • publishing the results

    Requirements are successfully completed university studies (master degree) and a successfully completed doctorate in social sciences or area studies. You also need to show a proven interest in the field of migration studies in the German and/or Japanese context (e.g. through publications) as well as interdisciplinary studies and excellent methodological skills in qualitative research. In addition, background knowledge on, experience or interest in the psychological, emotional or affective dimensions of migration are required. Japanese language skills required.

The Center for Intercultural Dialogue publishes a series of short briefs describing Key Concepts in Intercultural Dialogue. Different people, working in different countries and disciplines, use different vocabulary to describe their interests, yet these terms overlap. Our goal is to provide some of the assumptions and history attached to each concept for those unfamiliar with it. As there are other concepts you would like to see included, send an email. If there are concepts you would like to prepare, provide a brief explanation of why you think the concept is central to the study of intercultural dialogue, and why you are the obvious person to write up that concept.

The Faculty of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences at the University of Exeter are seeking to appoint a new Senior Lecturer with a particular interest in Intercultural Communication. This full time, permanent post is available from January 2023. They are looking to extend the research profile of Intercultural Communication and to offer leadership and specialist teaching on the new MA in this area. To complement existing strengths within the Faculty, you may have research and teaching interests in intercultural communication and the workplace/ health/ pragmatics/ the global south/ media or business communication. You will be a member of the Department of Languages, Cultures and Visual Studies, but expected to work and create connections across disciplines. You may also be required to teach on and convene modules at undergraduate level, as well as attracting and supervising postdoctoral researchers and postgraduate research students.

U Manchester: Lecturer in Global Development (UK)

The University of Manchester seeks to appoint a Lecturer in Global Development (Teaching and Research) within the Global Development Institute (GDI). This post will enhance the GDI’s research and teaching capacity in global development, in particular on the theoretical and empirical analysis of labour, gender and/or environmental sustainability in global production. The GDI has made significant advances in research and policy on global value chains and production networks, in particular through the ‘Capturing the Gains: Economic and Social Upgrading in Global Value Chains’ programme (2008-2014), the ‘Rising Powers and Interdependent Futures’ programme (2010-2017) and the ‘Shifting South: Decent Work and Regional Value Chains’ study (2019-21).

This new appointment is expected to contribute to and help lead the next iteration of policy focused research at GDI on these critical areas. The University welcomes applications from exceptional candidates who can make significant contributions to research and research-informed teaching that complements existing offerings in GDI. The post will be attached to the GDI’s Social Development (SD) teaching cluster and the Global Production Networks, Trade and Labour research group.

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Utah State University invites applications for a founding Director of the newly created Heravi Peace Institute. Applicants will be considered at the rank of tenured Associate or Full Professor, in a social sciences or humanities discipline, or—depending on credentials and experience—as an advanced Professional Practice (non-tenure track) rank. Reporting to the Dean of the college, the Director will also be appointed to a faculty position (associate or full professor) in an academic department within the College. Rank and status are dependent on the Director’s qualifications and experience. For this hybrid administrative-faculty position, they seek to hire an individual with a proven track record of excellence in leadership, teaching, research and/or praxis in peace and/or transformative conflict. The ideal candidate will demonstrate success in fundraising, grant-writing, and public outreach. This position is located on the Logan campus, with the responsibility to make Institute programming accessible to USU’s statewide students and campuses. The Director will confer with a faculty advisory board who will provide ideas, opinions, and feedback. This is a fiscal-year position with an anticipated start date of August 2023.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Provide effective administrative and strategic leadership of the HPI
  • Supervise Institute staff
  • Coordinate with the CHaSS Dean, department heads, the Institute’s faculty advisory board, and other faculty members and leaders across the college and university
  • Collaborate with affiliated faculty and other leaders to establish and fulfill the Institute’s strategic initiatives and priorities
  • Work with faculty to develop curriculum addressing issues of transformative conflict and peacebuilding
  • Partner with the Dean and advancement officers in fundraising for the Institute
  • Seek grant funding from external sources to support the mission of the Institute
  • Build partnerships with local, state, national, and global entities to enhance the Institute’s programming, internships, and other opportunities for students

  • Teach undergraduate peace and conflict courses, with the option of teaching in a disciplinary field

U Cambridge: Research for Equitable Access and Learning Postdoc (UK)

The Research for Equitable Access and Learning (REAL) Centre within the Faculty of Education wishes to appoint a Research Associate to work on a project that maps research in Sub-Saharan Africa from African-based universities and research institutions, with a focus on foundational literacy and numeracy.

This study is in collaboration with the charity, Education Sub-Saharan Africa (ESSA) with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. It will involve the further development of the African Education Research Database, established by the REAL Centre together with ESSA. The postholder will be involved in extending the database to include publications in French, along with more detailed mapping of research on foundational literacy and numeracy. They will also undertake more detailed searches of literature within selected countries in sub-Saharan Africa on this topic. The postholders will provide an analysis of the scope of research in the region/selected countries with a particular focus on foundational literacy and numeracy, and identify gaps for potential future research. They will work under the direction of Professor Pauline Rose in close collaboration with ESSA.

Applicants must hold a PhD in a relevant subject area (Education, Economics, Sociology or Development Studies, or other area that uses relevant literature and research methods); have excellent research and computer skills in particular for searching and analysis of literature; an ability to critically review reports and other documents, and to prepare drafts of reports emerging from this analysis to a high standard.

Grawemeyer Award for Ideas Improving World Order 2023

AwardsThe Grawemeyer Award for Ideas Improving World Order is given to those who have taken on issues of world importance and presented viewpoints that could lead to a more just and peaceful world. Award: $100,000. Deadline: 31 January 2023.

The Award is presented annually to the winner of a competition designed to stimulate the recognition, dissemination and critical analysis of outstanding proposals for improving world order. Submissions will be judged according to originality, feasibility and potential impact, not by the cumulative record of the nominee. They may address a wide range of global concerns including foreign policy and its formation; the conduct of international relations or world politics; global economic issues, such as world trade and investment; resolution of regional, ethnic or racial conflicts; the proliferation of destructive technologies; global cooperation on environmental protection or other important issues; international law and organization; any combination or particular aspects of these, or any other suitable idea which could at least incrementally lead to a more just and peaceful world order.

The Center for Responsible Leadership at the Stockholm School of Economics is seeking candidates for a 1-year 80% Post Doc position within the MERITA project. Candidates should have a research background in topics related to migration studies. They especially seek candidates with a multi-disciplinary academic background to organize the research activities of the MERITA project. As a Postdoc in the MERITA project, you will be central to the organization of the forum, the development of a research application and at least one co-authored publication.
