Applications are invited for appointment as Tenure-Track Professor/Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in Japanese Studies (Japan and the World) in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures, to commence on July 1, 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and with consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract. The level of appointment will be determined based on qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. Exceptionally outstanding candidates at the Professor/Associate Professor level may be considered for appointment on tenure terms subject to approval.

Applicants should have an internationally recognised record of research excellence and possess proficient or near-proficient fluency in Japanese and English. The Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies (CBS) is one of the constituent departments of the Faculty of Humanities. One of the core missions of CBS is to promote and develop studies of Chinese in multilingual contexts and studies of multilingualism in Chinese contexts. With over 40 full-time academic and teaching staff members, CBS is a vibrant center for research in the areas of Chinese linguistics, corpus linguistics, language and communication disorders, cognitive neuroscience, bilingual communication, Chinese language education, Chinese language testing, language technology, and translation and interpreting. The Department now seeks to extend its strength in areas like language data analytics and computational linguistics. The Department is also devoted to offering high-quality education programmes at different levels (bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral) in Chinese Linguistics, Chinese Language Teaching, Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, Speech Therapy, Translating and Interpreting, Bilingual Corporate Communication, as well as Korean/Japanese language and culture courses at bachelor’s level. Lingnan U: Film & Media Studies (Hong Kong)

The Department of Visual Studies (VS) offers a multi-disciplinary course of study, focusing on art history and film art. VS admits about 30 undergraduate, MPhil and PhD students each academic year. The BA (Hons) in Visual Studies curriculum emphasises the history and theory of visual arts and culture in Asia and beyond; in addition, the programme offers students practical, object- and skill-based learning through studio practice, video production, curating and internships. The Department also offers a taught Master’s programme in Curating and Art History (MACAH). Another new taught Master’s programme in Creative and Media Industries (MACMI) will be launched in 2021/22.

VS is inviting applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Associate Professor to contribute to teaching and research in the areas of media industries and film studies. The appointee is expected to: (i) teach relevant courses at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including supervising undergraduate and/or postgraduate final projects; (ii) to develop innovative and rigorous research and generate research outputs with high impact; and (iii) to contribute to service and development of the Department. The appointee will be expected to make substantial contribution to the developing MACMI programme, and may need to assume a concurrent appointment as the Programme Director.
