The Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies (CBS) is one of the constituent departments of the Faculty of Humanities. One of the core missions of CBS is to promote and develop studies of Chinese in multilingual contexts and studies of multilingualism in Chinese contexts. With over 40 full-time academic and teaching staff members, CBS is a vibrant center for research in the areas of Chinese linguistics, corpus linguistics, language and communication disorders, cognitive neuroscience, bilingual communication, Chinese language education, Chinese language testing, language technology, and translation and interpreting. The Department now seeks to extend its strength in areas like language data analytics and computational linguistics. The Department is also devoted to offering high-quality education programmes at different levels (bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral) in Chinese Linguistics, Chinese Language Teaching, Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, Speech Therapy, Translating and Interpreting, Bilingual Corporate Communication, as well as Korean/Japanese language and culture courses at bachelor’s level. Within the Department, there is a PolyU- PekingU Research Centre on Chinese Linguistics, a Speech Therapy Unit, a Research Centre for Language, Cognition, and Neuroscience, and a Centre for Translation Studies.

Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies
The Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies is one of the constituent departments of the Faculty of Humanities. One of the missions of the Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies is to promote and develop studies of Chinese in multilingual contexts and studies of multilingualism in Chinese contexts. It has built a reputation in Applied Chinese Language Studies, and seeks to extend its strength in areas like Bilingualism (including Translation and Interpreting), Cross-Cultural Communication and East Asian Studies. Another mission of the Department is to offer profession-based programmes that meet the career aspirations of young adults in Hong Kong and Greater China. It offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree programmes in Bilingual Corporate Communication, Chinese Linguistics, Chinese Language Teaching, Speech Therapy, Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, Translating and Interpreting. It also offers programmes in Korean/Japanese Business Communication at bachelor’s and master’s levels. Within the Department, there is a Centre for Translation Studies, a PolyU-PekingU Research Centre on Chinese Linguistics, a Speech Therapy Unit, and a Chinese Language Centre which provides training in Chinese language and Putonghua for the whole University. Research Assistant Professor in Chinese Linguistics
The appointee will be required to (a) engage in teaching and related learning activities at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels; (b) take an important role in curriculum design and development; (c) undertake research in his/her area of expertise, including but not limited to application for external research grants and participation in research projects; and (d) provide administrative support for academic and departmental affairs, and play an active role in programme management for further development of the Department’s objectives.

Applicants should have (a) a PhD degree in a relevant discipline, preferably with the specialism in Chinese Syntax, Semantics, Psycholinguistics, Sociolinguistics or Cantonese Linguistics; (b) a good record of relevant academic and/or professional achievements; (c) the relevant research experience (as supported by evidence of research projects and outputs).  Experience of postdoctoral research positions will be a plus but not required; (d) fluency in English; and (e) a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, scholarly activities and professional service.

Remuneration and Conditions of Service
The remuneration package for the Research Assistant Professor post is the same as an Assistant Professor post.  A highly competitive remuneration package will be offered.  Appointment will be on fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract for up to three years.  Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement.  Applicants should state their current and expected salary in the application.
