MOOC Intercultural Communication (China)

“MOOCs”Intercultural Communication MOOC, Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), Shanghai, China. Opens March 2, 2020 with free access for 7 weeks from any start date between March-July 2020.

Virtual education is especially being promoted across China or other affected areas to limit the spread of the Corona virus. To help students from anywhere connect with the world during this time, the SISU “Intercultural Communication” course is being offered again as a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course).

This introductory 5-week course (doable in about 4 hours per week) seeks to engage global learners to better appreciate, adjust to, and work or study in different cultures. The weekly topics focus on (1) comprehending intercultural communication, (2) contextualizing cultural identities, (3) comparing cultural communication styles (4) clarifying and contrasting values, and (5) cultivating intercultural adaptation.

For those who may also be interested in languages, SISU/FutureLearn are also opening 3 other introductory courses for learning Chinese at the same time: Chinese Pronunciation and Tones, Chinese Grammar, and Chinese Conversation.

NOTE: Due to Covid-19, the conference has been moved from China to Finland, the call for papers has been re-issued, and IAMCR will hold its 2022 meeting in China.

The International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) invites the submission of abstracts of papers and proposals for panels for the 2020 Congress of the Association, which will be held from 12 to 16 July, 2020 at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China.

At the critical juncture of the second decade of the 21st century, the world is facing tremendous challenges. The past three decades of cultural, economic and communication globalisation have created sharp income and wealth inequities, a divisive international community, dysfunctional media, an increasingly fragmented digital culture and an accelerating environmental crisis. We witness growing populism and protectionism and a dissolving consensus on global engagement and international collaboration. We see deepening technological contestation in digital media and artificial intelligence between the world’s two economic powerhouses. We also witness a sharp decline of the quality of national and international information flows as a result of widespread misinformation facilitated by social media.

These developments pose urgent questions and challenges for media and communications scholars. What are the reasons for the division, gaps and fragmentation we now see? What roles have digital media communication played in these developments at both the local and global levels? What values should inform our proposals for addressing them?

This year’s conference aims to respond to those challenges by re-examining the roles and patterns of global communication while including local voices, seeking critical reflections on the relationship between them, and exploring feasible agendas for a shared digital future based on inclusiveness, respect and reciprocity.

The School of Journalism and Communication at Renmin University of China was founded in 1955. Since then, it has developed into a nationally-acclaimed institution of academic research, professional training and education reform in journalism and communication. The school’s Journalism and Communication discipline is ranked as the first-class key discipline by the Ministry of Education. It has a national experimental teaching demonstration center, and a Ministry of Education key research base of humanities and social sciences, the Journalism and Social Development Research Center. The journalism and communication program has been persistently ranked as Top 1 in previous rounds of national disciplinary assessment organized by the Ministry of Education. ProfilesHuan ZOU is a lecturer at Shanghai International Studies University. From 2021 to 2023, she provided professional service as coordinator of onsite data/material collection for projects of climate change, migration, and adaptation at the Education University of Hong Kong. Before this, she worked as an editor in social sciences and foreign literature at Shanghai Translation Publishing House (2016-21).

ZOU HuanShe graduated from Fudan University with a Bachelor’s degree in Translation and the University of Hong Kong with a Master’s degree in China Development Studies. Her research interests span China studies, historical climate change and its educational practice, comparative literature, and native American studies. She has contributed to publishing projects of notable prize winners including The Sympathizer (100th Pulitzer Prize winner) & The Refugees by Viet Thanh Nguyen, Collected Poems: 1931-2001 by Czeslaw Milosz (Nobel Laureate), No Room for Small Dreams: The Making of Modern Israel by Shimon Peres (former Israeli President), as well as works by Paul A. Cohen, Ezra F. Vogel, and Henry Kissinger.

Renmin University of China’s School of Journalism and National Communication Strategy Research Center proudly announce the 2020 National Communication Strategy Forum on “Global Communication and National Development: Building Communities Across Borders.” The Forum will be held in Beijing on June 18, 2020.

The Forum aims to address some of the urgent and far-reaching issues related to the complex and dynamic interrelationships between global communication and national development. We witness in the recent years the emergence of an array of digital communication technologies such as ubiquitous networks, social media platforms, big data, artificial intelligence, etc. The emergence and increasingly widespread use of these technologies has brought about new possibilities in cross-cultural communication among people and nations, in the re-media/tion between the physical world and the virtual world, and in the trans/formation of new forms of cross-border networks and human communities. But while these cutting-edge digital technologies have facilitated much excitement and development opportunities in diverse industries and commercial enterprises, art and entertainment fields, as well as various aspects of national development, they have also bought about numerous social, economic, political and cultural issues or challenges, especially from the perspectives of intercultural communication and international relations.

College of Liberal Arts at WKU is seeking vibrant candidates to teach a full range of undergraduate Communication courses including, but not limited to: Social Media, Media Relations, Journalism, Speech Communication, Business & Professional Communication, Media Production, Public Relations and upper level Communication electives. A Lecturer is a full-time, 12-month employee who teaches 39 credits per year and provides student and learning support services during the assigned period. Lecturers will be expected to provide high quality teaching, student advisement and learning support services, and service to the university and/or professional community; and perform related work as required. Lecturer positions are non-tenure track and may be renewed on an annual basis.

Zhichao Qiu

He earned his M.A. degree from New York University in Foreign Language Education with a focus on Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. His research interests include the internationalization of higher education and cross-cultural communication. He has experiences not only in teaching foreign languages, but also in managing partnerships, student mobility programs, and intercultural training. His pioneering project “Buddy Program” at Beihang University has equipped over 300 students with advanced intercultural communication skills and global competence.

He is committed to pursuing research and professional work in intercultural communication and international higher education as his lifelong career.

The National Communication Association (NCA) announces the Third Biennial Conference on Communication, Media, and Governance in the Age of Globalization, to be held on the Beijing campus of the Communication University of China (CUC), June 19-21, 2020. The conference seeks to foster greater understanding between and collaboration among Chinese scholars of Communication and a wide range of international colleagues affiliated with NCA.

For this event, organizers will be using the United Nation’s “Millennium Development Goals” (MDGs). Approved in 2000, and signed by all 191 UN members, the MDGs serve as benchmarks in human development, quality of life, and global partnership.
