CFP History of Digital History between East and West (Luxembourg)

In histories of digital history, as in digital humanities in general, much emphasis has been placed on the two commonly recognized centers of the development of historical computing since the 1950s: the United States and Western Europe. As a result, crucial developments elsewhere have been overlooked, including in the Nordic countries as well as the Soviet Union and the various states of the Eastern bloc. The consequence of this omission is not merely a lack of knowledge about specific countries and a skewed understanding of digital history’s manifold early trajectories. It also creates epistemological blind spots regarding the political dimensions of the development of early historical computing and, given the latter’s networked nature within a general context of ‘East-West’ scholarly exchange in the Cold War period, obscures the transnational dimensions of the early history of digital history.

This workshop will address these blind spots by focusing attention on the question of how the local and the transnational intersected in the technology-inflected reshaping of historical research practices and how political backgrounds, contexts and constraints fed into this process. Organizers therefore seek papers that focus on local case studies in a transnational ‘East-West’ context, as well as those that consider comparative perspectives. Papers that ask what resources are available to support research in this area are similarly welcome.

Understanding tourism’s relationships with culture(s), and vice versa, is of ever-increasing significance in a globalising world. Tourism and Cultural Change is a series of books that critically examine the complex and ever-changing relationship between tourism and culture(s). The series focuses on the ways that places, peoples, pasts, and ways of life are increasingly shaped, transformed, created and packaged for touristic purposes. The series examines the ways tourism utilises/makes and re-makes cultural capital in its various guises (visual and performing arts, crafts, festivals, built heritage, cuisine etc.) and the multifarious political, economic, social and ethical issues that are raised as a consequence. Theoretical explorations, research-informed analyses and detailed historical reviews from a variety of disciplinary perspectives are invited to consider such relationships.

Roman Lietz received an MA and a PhD in Intercultural Business Communication from the Friedrich-Schiller-University of Jena, in Germany.

Roman LietzHe gained seven years of practical experience in Berlin (Germany) managing the – at that time – second largest project for integration assistants (Integrationslotsen) in Germany. With this practical backing, he commenced an academic career in teaching and research. He was a researcher at various universities (the Karlshochschule of Applied Sciences, the Hochschule Karlsruhe of Applied Sciences, the University of Landau, and the Johannes-Gutenberg University of Mainz/Germersheim) carrying out several applied research projects concerning questions of integration, participation and intercultural communication. The latest project is the ReDICo project (Researching Digital Interculturality Co-operatively), carried out together with Fergal Lenehan among others. The ReDICo research co-operative also retains editorship of the book series Studies in Digital Interculturality.

His list of publications includes one monograph concerned with quality assurance in integration projects (2018, in German), and three co-edited volumes on the topics of cyber-utopia/dystopia (2022, in English), language and interculturality in the digital world (2024, German and English), and about the reimagining of digital cosmopolitanism (2025, English), and more than 30 articles, research reports and newer forms of science content communication, such as an educast and a podcast.

The Global Case Study Challenge (GCSC) 2025 is a high-impact Virtual Exchange (VE) program focused on Developing Remote Work Competencies through Global Virtual Teamwork. Now in its 8th edition, the GCSC has engaged over 2,200 students and 70 educators from 40 universities across 25 countries in 485 global virtual teams.

The Centre for Advanced Study inherit. heritage in transformation, a BMBF-funded Käte Hamburger Kolleg based at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, is pleased to invite applications for its fellowship program, which will run from 1 October 2026 to 31 July 2027. This opportunity is open to both experienced and early-career postdoctoral researchers, as well as artists, filmmakers, and curators.

The ReDICo project (“Researching Digital Interculturality Co-operatively”) is pleased to announce an open call for submissions for the book series Studies in Digital Interculturality. This peer-reviewed series explores the diverse dimensions of intercultural practices and discourses within digital spaces, as well as their influence upon issues such as identities, group social cohesion and cultural change. In the series, they aim to publish thematically relevant monographs, edited volumes, dissertations and other contributions of the highest quality. A possibility also exists to publish all books as open access by the transcript Publishing House, in cooperation with the international de Gruyter Publishing House.

This Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) at Lady Margaret Hall (LMH) is intended as a career development post for an early career academic. It provides a three-year opportunity to develop independent research alongside gaining some experience and training in tutorial teaching. The successful applicant will be provided with a mentor, who will offer career guidance and general advice.

The person appointed would be expected to conduct significant research and teaching in the field of non-violent conflict resolution, broadly defined. They would be expected to undertake research that will have a substantial empirical component in the field. The research should have practical as well as academic impact in their subject area, and that will inform policymaking of the professionals working in the area. The person appointed will be expected to undertake up to three hours a week of undergraduate tutorial teaching in International Relations (for LMH during the three 8-week terms). S/he will help with the organisation and promotion of teaching and research in International Relations at LMH and will play a full role in the intellectual and social life of the College. The College would also encourage the Research Fellow to engage with the academic activities of the Department of Politics and International Relations.
