In the proposed book, we examine the nature of mobility in mobile health, exploring the ways in which Asian mobilities configure into mobile media and health. The overarching framework of the book explores the intersections between mobile media and health, contextually situated in Asia and theoretically informed by Asia-centric conceptual maps for engaging with the linkages between mobile media and health. In one segment of the book, we examine mHealth projects across Asia, examining the overarching frameworks that constitute these projects, the underlying assumptions, the articulations of culture, and the expressions of agency as communities negotiate their access to and experiences with mHealth solutions. Drawing upon the overarching framework of the culture-centered approach, the book examines the flows of material, labor, and participation in mobile health interventions. Attention is paid to the ways in which mHealth interventions are conceptualized in community contexts, the role of these interventions in engaging with communities, and the constitution of community agency in mHealth interventions.  In another segment of the book, we explore the ways in which health is constituted in Asia in the uses of mobile devices. Attention is paid to the vulnerabilities and risks to health constituted by mobile media, and the ways in which communities at the margins negotiate these health risks. The Chapters in this section will explore the health consequences of mobile media uses, and how mobile media products and artifacts are negotiated in the overarching context of health.

First, this edited book calls for scholarship across Asia that explores critically the interplays of power and control in mHealth interventions, addresses cultural context, and/or pays attention to the ways in which community agency is conceptualized in the ambits of mHealth Interventions. Based on the cases explored in the book, the overarching framework will examine Asia-centric concepts of health, culture, and technology as conceptualized in the ambits of mHealth Interventions. The book will provide an overarching structure for comparing mHealth cases across Asia, thus developing key theoretical anchors for exploring the linkages between mobility, culture, and structures as communities enact their agency in negotiating mHealth.

Second, the book calls for scholarship in Asia that explores the intersections of mobile media and health, and the juxtaposition of mobilities in/through mobile media in the backdrop of health outcomes. Chapters may explore the health outcomes attached to the manufacturing/ production/ disposal of mobile media, the health outcomes of mobile media uses, and the ways in which health risks/ vulnerabilities are negotiated through mobilities afforded by mobile media in Asia. Based on the conceptual anchors offered by Chapters covering Asia, this section of the book will offer comparative conceptual nodes for theorizing health, mobility, and mobile media located in Asia.

Call for abstracts:
Please submit abstracts outlining the paper. Papers submitted for the book may be theoretical pieces, empirically based pieces, or case studies comparing multiple cases. The important thing is that the Chapters be grounded in the context of Asia and seriously attend to the ways in which context configures in the theorizing of mobility, mobile media, and health. The abstract should spell out how the chapter contributes to the theorizing of mobility and health centered in Asia, drawing on culturally situated concepts that originate from and situate themselves in the Asian context. Abstracts should be no more than 1000 words long. Abstracts selected for submission will be invited to be developed into full papers (between 8000 and 10,000 words in length). We invite proposals from scholars wishing to undertake research that utilises and promotes the resources of the AFI Research Collection.

The Fellowship is designed to showcase the unique holdings of the AFIRC, including film stills, newspaper clippings and other significant artefacts from the Australian film and television industry.

CREATOUR is an incubator/demonstration and multidisciplinary research initiative, supporting collaborative research processes. The three-year project aims to connect the cultural/creative and tourism sectors through the development of an integrated research and application approach to catalyzing creative tourism in small cities and rural areas.

CREATOUR involves five research centres working with a range of cultural/creative organizations and other stakeholders located in small cities across Portugal in the Norte, Centro, Alentejo and Algarve regions. The project is informed by theoretical and methodological approaches from cultural/creative sector development, tourism, and regional development. It is organized using the key dimensions of support to enhance value for creative sector development [OECD 2014] as a framework: 1) build knowledge and capacity, 2) support content development and link creativity to place, and 3) strengthen network and cluster formation.

Its overall objective is to develop and pilot an integrated approach and research agenda for creative tourism in small cities and rural areas in Portugal, developing strong links within and amongst regions. The project aims to develop a sustainable creative tourism sector to boost tourism in these areas as well as to contribute meaningfully to local cultural vibrancy and holistic development in pilot communities. Building on a twofold approach, CREATOUR intertwines Theory and Experimentation, combining multidisciplinary theoretical and methodological frameworks, cultural mapping, and benchmarking exercises with the development of an array of Pilots, or creative tourism case studies.

CREATOUR combina atividades de investigação e demonstração na construção de uma abordagem integrada ao turismo criativo em cidades de pequena e média dimensão em Portugal. O projeto pretende desenvolver uma abordagem integrada e pilotar uma agenda de investigação centradas no turismo criativo em pequenas cidades e áreas rurais, fortalecendo ligações dentro e entre regiões portuguesas. O projeto alia teoria e experimentação, combinando referenciais teóricos e metodológicos multidisciplinares, mapeamento cultural, e exercícios de benchmarking com a análise de estudos de caso de turismo criativo. Neste contexto, o projeto CREATOUR visa produzir recomendações políticas, dando especial atenção à interação em cluster e à colaboração em rede.

The Global Communication Association invites you to submit your abstracts for the 12th annual convention to be held in Greensboro, NC, USA, on April 7-9, 2017. All submissions will be peer-reviewed and you should receive a notification of acceptance or denial within 35 days.

The conference theme and topics are: Changing Global Discourse and Discord: Education, Communication, Media, and Social Responsibility

The GCA invites research papers exploring any aspect of issues related to global communication including, but not limited, to the following broad topics.

Paper Submission guidelines
–         All submissions should include two separate attachments in either Word or PDF format.
–         A 400-word abstract of the paper should be sent as an email attachment by October 24, 2016. The abstract should include research objectives, methodology, and significance followed by keywords.
–         A separate document including the name, academic institution, mailing address, phone number, email address, and brief author’s profile must be submitted for each author.
–         If accepted the full-length paper should be 4000-5000 words (not to exceed 25-pages excluding references and tables) and must be submitted by January 30, 2017. The paper should adhere to The American Psychological Association (APA) style including 2.0 line spacing, Times New Roman 12-point font size, 1.0″ margins on all sides, and standard 8.5 X 11 paper size.

New Assistant to the Director of CID: Min He

CID People
CID has recently welcomed Min He as the new Assistant to the Director of the Center. Min is a Master’s student in Intercultural and International Communication at Royal Roads University in Canada. She is currently completing an internship through her work at CID. She will conduct a marketing research study on subscribers to the Center, translate several Key Concepts in Intercultural Dialogue and upgrade several aspects of CID’s presence on social media platforms. Min is excited to join the Center and learn new skills.

Min is originally from Beijing, China. She transferred two years of academic credits to Saint Mary’s University in Canada, completing her BA in English Literature there. During her undergraduate years, Min gained broad volunteer experience with international visitors, which led her to decide to pursue a graduate degree in Intercultural Communication.

 

Being an intercultural Communication practitioner, especially when the global economy is booming, means to effectively build conversations among different cultural groups. Min’s academic degrees have expanded her potential abilities in this field, as well as fundamentally oriented her future career path.

Min looks forward to contributing to CID and devoting her efforts to helping the Center foster good connections with subscribers as a result of learning more about who they are.

We are seeking to appoint a Research Fellow in Linguistics and Professional Communication. This is a 2.5 year fixed-term post (1 October 2016 – 31 March 2019) funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), with funding fully guaranteed for the full 2.5 year term. This is an excellent opportunity to join an established research cluster and business unit, Linguistic Profiling for Professionals (LiPP), in the Centre for Research in Applied Linguistics (CRAL), School of English at the University of Nottingham’s UK Campus.

The successful candidate will play a key role in research and business engagement as part of a 10.1 million ERDF grant, Enabling Innovation. This project involves a series of innovative business engagement initiatives with local businesses based in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Candidates must have a PhD in a relevant area prior to taking up the post. Expertise in one or more of the following areas would be a distinct advantage: The sociolinguistics of the workplace, business communication, organisational communication, linguistic pragmatics. The ability to analyse data using corpus linguistics software and/or eye-tracking technology is desirable, though not essential. Previous experience of working in industry or with different stakeholders outside of academia would be an advantage.

The interview process will include a short research presentation and a formal interview.
